The weather was warm, beautiful and welcoming to conference attendees. The conference pre-session was held on Thursday, November 6 th at the hotel and consisted of TNCC and ENPC instructor courses with Terri DeWees, Jim Holtevoit and Sarah Norman as the course director and faculty liaison. Thursday evening, NCENA members and guests attended a dinner and education at the Blue Water Grill, sponsored by ProCalcitonin. On Friday, speakers included AnnMarie Papa, 2011 ENA President was the opening speaker and encouraged us to find and follow our own yellow brick road. Dr. Ryan Oglesby & Dr. Jeanne Venella who taught us how to dance (see NCENA facebook page for video), Dr. Sean Bush of Vidant Healthcare and of TLC Venom ER spoke about snake bites and brought his pet snake for attendees to meet. Steve Strout, 2015 NCENA President-Elect discussed CIWA protocols and Michelle Kuszajewski reviewed simulation training and education for emergency nurses. Dr. Eric Toschlog returned this year for a review of current trauma trends. Stay tuned for more information on the location of the 2015 NCENA Fall Conference; if you are interested in being on the conference planning committee, please contact 2015 NCENA President, Renee Collette.
2 Page 2 Greetings All! Trauma Drama. An update on TNCC & ENPC through the state NC ENA News & Views We have had almost 1000 nurses statewide complete the 7th edition of TNCC. On a whole, the course directors have ironed out most the issues with the revised agenda and the course continues to be a successful way to improve the education of managing injured patients. We continue to need instructor courses throughout the state to grow our instructor pool. If you are interested in holding an instructor course and need assistance from state faculty I encourage you to contact me and I will do my best to assist you or find someone nearby that will help. Goals for 2015 are to increase communication throughout the state among our course directors and the state board. We would like to communicate the standards expected from our course directors and Faculty to maintain quality courses across the state. We would like to avoid some of the questionable behavior that has been experience in some other states. Course Directors should expect communication about upcoming conference call meetings in early If you have any questions or suggestions I welcome you to contact myself or any NCENA board member. I would like to thank the board for allowing me this opportunity in functioning as the Trauma Chair for our state. I look forward to continuing as your State Trauma Chair! Sarah Norman, RN CEN sgnormanrn@gmail.com ENPC update Steve Strout, MSN, RN, CEN, CPEN Steven.strout@haymed.org January October 57 provider classes 6 instructor courses with additional 26 instructors

4 Page 4 NC ENA News & Views Here s to the New Year Renee Collette, 2015 NCENA President Hello NC ENA Members! I am so excited serving as President for NC ENA Council in 2015! Let me tell you a little about myself. Currently, I work in the Emergency Department at Cherokee Indian Hospital in Cherokee, NC and in the Office of Decedent Affairs at Mission Hospital in Asheville. I am also a SANE A/P. I have worked in Emergency Care since 1982 when I worked as a Ward Clerk while in nursing school at the University of Akron. I graduated in 1986 and worked in ICU and the Emergency Department as a new grad. I joined the Emergency Nurses Association in 1986 because I believed in order to grow in the field of ED Nursing I needed to affiliate with the national organization from the start. I have been involved with ENA on chapter and State Council levels continuously ever since. Through this involvement I have grown personally and professionally. I have met so many fabulous ED Nurses and continue to thrive in their company! In 2015 I know that NC State Council will continue making outstanding accomplishments in the field of Emergency Nursing. We will apply for the State Achievement Award and I am certain we will achieve it in recognition for all the hard work that has been done in the state. TNCC and ENPC will be presented throughout the state with our State Chairs, Sarah Norman (TNCC) and Tracey Gates (ENPC) giving guidance and support to all the directors. The web page will be functioning in a manner that allows anyone who is visiting the site to navigate with ease; for this we owe a big thanks to Chris McGrath. We will continue communicating to as many members as possible through s, newsletter, face book, and more thanks to the efforts of Karen Drum. Monies for the NC ENA State Council continue in a productive manner, with gratitude to David Solomon. We will review policies and procedures for NC ENA State Council, with the leadership of Steve Strout, our President-Elect. Chris McGrath will also be chairing Government Affairs. Karen Drum will be involved in the Awards Committee, newsletter and face book. Individual Chapters throughout the state are phenomenal. They continue to conduct meetings and conferences for the membership and are doing great work in the areas with injury prevention, engaging nursing students, securing a solid and caring future for Emergency Nursing Practice. I promise, as president, that the NC State Council will continue to be there for all Chapters. * Renee Collette, RN, BSN, CEN, SANE A/P 2015 NCENA President NCENA Members Poster presentations At ENA National Conference 2015 Margaret Galloway & Rosemary Green present their poster on Sepsis Screening and survival rates through early identification. For more information please contact Margaret at Margaret.Galloway@msj.org The NC ENA will continue with a full plate of activities in the coming year. There are so many dedicated individuals, it is difficult to name them all and all that they do. Let me thank you in advance, because with all your help, we will continue to accomplish it all! I can be reached and will respond by or cell phone (please leave a message) within 24 hours. cedrxc@msj.org Joy Brooks presents a Team Approach to Reducing Door to Needle Time for Stroke Patients. 5 NC ENA News & Views Member Spotlight Page 5 $$$ Show me the money $$$ Treasurer Report David Solomon, RN, BSN, CEN, EMT-P NCENA Treasurer Although it's still too early to tell, it looks like we will have a surplus this year. Our largest line item is travel and we will probably not spend it all. Our website cost us a little more than planned but we will make it up in other areas that were over budgeted. I'm still working on the state conference numbers. It still doesn't look like we will make money on it but with vendors, registrations and the money we budgeted. We won't go over budget. Please remember Chapter financial reports are due by January 31st. If late submissions cause the state to incur late tax filing fees, chapters can be held liable for the penalties. Also, when new chapter treasurers take office, they should contact me to get Bank of America online banking usernames and passwords. Do not go through Bank of America yourself as this causes issues with everyone's access to their accounts including the State accounts. Remember to send your year-end tax report to David (nurse.dsolomon@gmail.com) no later than January 31 st or the late chapter(s) will be fiscally responsible for paying the late fees. Here s to 2014 A year in Review As I sit here and write this I think about how much we have to be thankful for. I am thankful for all my colleagues who make such a difference in all of our patient s lives on a daily basis. This has been a busy year for our state and our accomplishments reflect that. NCENA was awarded the State Achievement Award (6th year in a row), our membership is up to 1465, there were 23 delegates to General Assembly, and we held the Inaugural NCENA Leadership Conference. We developed new partnerships with North Carolina College of Emergency Physicians and North Carolina Nurse s Association and partnered with ACEP to present at subcommittee meetings on Conscious Sedation to allow RNs to continue using Propofol and Ketamine in the ED as well as partnered with ACEP to provide position paper to North Carolina Medical Society on psychiatric patient boarding. We had a successful NCENA Fall Conference and a survey was sent out to the membership to help determine where to hold the conference in We have faced challenges and met them head on; a new vendor was hired to maintain and update our website. We continue to solicit membership for participation on committees. I encourage every member to consider participating in a committee; even a small contribution can make a significant difference. As the year ends and my term comes to an end I am grateful for the honor and privilege of serving all of you in the state. I am extremely proud of the work all of the nurses in our state do to care for our patients. Take time to pause and enjoy the holidays. Warmest Regards, Chris McGrath RN, CFRN, EMT President North Carolina Emergency Nurses Association
