Utah ENA Newsletter The Pulse Summer ENA President Welcome 2015! I cannot believe that our year is already half gone! I am excited to serve as your state ENA president this year. Our state council has chosen two goals to concentrate on this year. We want to increase our membership and inform new (and not-so-new) emergency nurses what an amazing professional organization the ENA is. Our other goal is to provide educational opportunities for ED nurses. In June, a cadaver lab was held at the U of U, sponsored by Teleflex, and we had great attendance! I want you to know a few wonderful things about the ENA: 1. There is a wealth of information online when you log onto the ENA web page (ena.org). If you are a member, you can subscribe and join a free emergency nursing Listserv, which helps improve nursing skills. Some examples of listserv topics include rapid and focused assessment, respiratory assessment, IV access skills, ABG and ECG interpretation, and trauma trends. 2. The ENA published the premier emergency nursing publication--the Journal of Emergency Nursing (via mail and on-line when you are a member). This journal provides free continuing education modules, as well as keeps nurses updated on the latest trends and research that is occurring in EDs around the world. 3. The educational opportunities are numerous! As an ENA member, you can access multiple free educational models on the website, but do not forget about live education that is available to you in your local chapters, as well as the annual national conference. This year the ENA
conference will be in Orlando, Florida. It will be amazing. Please check out for more details. The dates are September 28-October 3, Scholarships are available at a state and national level. Log in to for information related to national scholarships or for information related to state scholarships. 4. There are many ways to get involved and obtain the greatest value from your ENA membership on the state level. We encourage you to attend local meetings and to share your expertise on a state committee. Topics range from public safety and injury prevention, to trauma education, to pediatric and geriatric education, to membership, to finance and communication, and to government affairs. Our state ENA also provides scholarships for promoting the future of emergency nursing. There are many opportunities for leadership and professional development in the Utah ENA. I leave you with a challenge for the year Please work on getting one new ENA member this year. I have a new friend and a new member as of last week. You can do it too! Please feel free to call or me with any questions or comments. Stacie Stacie-hunsaker@byu.edu ENA National Conference is being held this year in Orlando, FL. The dates are September 29- October 3. There are numerous educational opportunities offered at this great conference and a great chance to pick up your necessary contact hours for your CEN. ENA has reformatted the conference this year by making classes available at different time frames leaving partial days open to enjoy Orlando activities also. Go to ena.org to register for this great annual educational event!!
Utah ENA Delegates for the National ENA convention Utah ENA sends at least 5 delegates to the National ENA convention every year to help vote and shape the future of ED nursing. Anyone can apply whom is active in ED nursing. We have a delegate application form online at utahena.org. It is based on a point system on how active you are in Utah ENA, certifications, teaching, writing articles, etc. Utah ENA provides a monetary contribution towards your expenses. If you have an interest in applying, please go online right now and fill out the form. The deadline is July 31, It is a really fun time to meet many other active ED nurses from across the country while helping make educated decisions on topics that are vital to ED nursing. Do it now!!! Membership: As I reflect on my more than 20-year association with ENA, I realize that my involvement with the organization has paid dividends, both measurable and immeasurable. The measurable benefits include discounts on educational meetings and certifications, receiving the Journal of Emergency Nursing, scholarship opportunities, leadership opportunities and the many resources available. The immeasurable comes from networking at meetings and conferences and developing lifelong associations and friendships, which are equally valuable. It all began when someone invited me to be a member of our professional organization, and I joined ENA. It continued when someone encouraged me, and I regularly attended chapter meetings, and because someone that I respected mentored me, I was able to run for and be elected to a chapter office and then a state office. Now, I am reaching out to you to be the person who invites, encourages and mentors a new generation of ENA members so that they can receive those same measurable and immeasurable benefits. Invite someone new to become a member of our professional organization. Encourage someone to regularly
attend chapter meetings, and mentor someone as they run for, and are elected to one of many available chapter and state leadership positions. Let your involvement pay dividends! On-line application: /nf.ena.org/eweb/dynamicpage.aspx?webcode=enaindividualinformation&type=ena Benefits of ENA membership: If you have any questions, feel free to contact: Sondra Heaston, Utah ENA Membership Chair at Emergency Nursing Research Are you one of the nurses who shy away from conducting research in your unit because of the memories you may be trying to suppress from your nursing programs? Or do you think research is only for those PhDs and DNPs at a university? Well, I am here to tell you that the best ideas for research come from those closest to the patients. As you work in the trenches every day, asking those tough questions about why you do things a certain way, or is there a better way, or why something happen the way it did, YOU have just accomplished the initial key step in conducting research.. you asked the important question and identified a gap in knowledge! Research does not have to be a painful process. As part of our professional behavior, we need to be doing one or more of the following: 1. Keeping up on the current evidence based practice through journal reading and/or attending conferences 2. Being the change agent in your unit to implement evidence based best practices 3. Initiating or actively participating in research in your unit ENA has long recognized the power of research to inform leadership, give strength to advocacy, provide a knowledge base for expertise, and promote innovation. The Institute for Emergency Nursing Research (IENR) expands ENA research efforts and enables systematic inquiry. IENR seeks to advance the field of emergency nursing and emergency care through research and evidence-based programs. IENR provides the ENA membership with opportunities, resources, and assistance to enhance their involvement in research activities and their pursuit of excellence in emergency nursing. IENR is supported by its Advisory Council, which is composed of research experts in emergency nursing. The Advisory Council provides diverse multidisciplinary input concerning the programs of IENR. On the ENA website you can find great information about funding, making your research ideas come to fruition as well as additional resources. Please link to the website below for additional information. As your state representative for emergency nursing research I would like to compile a list of the research studies in which nurses in the emergency departments are currently involved in. Please send your current study title to me at the following James-kohl@byu.edu
Cedar Breaks Chapter The Cedar Breaks Chapter had a meeting in May with the topic of Mental Health Issues and Referrals. We have 3 members registered for the CEN Exam. We are looking forward to having more new members join our chapter as we increase the number of employees in local emergency departments. Giana Hulet Salt Lake City Chapter The Salt Lake Chapter of ENA had its first gathering at the Tavernacle on April 15th for an informal fun meeting to find out about ENA and show off our artistic talents at Paint Nite! It was a wonderful evening and we discovered a few Picassos among us. We have our second ENA meeting scheduled for August 21st at It will be a great gathering at the Capitol Rotunda with Senator Dabakis! Come and join us for a tour of the Capitol and some Q and A, sharing your concerns about current ED nursing issues. Please contact Sharon Novatnak, Chapter President, for any questions. sharon.novatnak@hsc.utah.edu Dixie Chapter In the Dixie Chapter we have elected a President-Elect. It is Michelle Clark. Vikki Webster continues to serve as President with Cindy Hurst as Treasurer. We are planning a learning day in which a co-worker teaches us all Yoga. We are also planning another service project in which we provide supplies to our local shelter, Dixie Care and Share. We have tentative plans for a trauma conference in the fall. Our chapter is pretty low-key but we are excited to have a few new members this year. Vikki Timpanogos Chapter Plans for upcoming ENA meetings for the Timpanogos Chapter our next meeting will be a lecture on rashes and dermatological problems seen in the ER because of the recent bed bug and increase in scabies I feel that this will be timely.we are planning to repeat the suture lecture with the pigs feet. I do not have dates yet but will let you know soon. Donna Anderson RN BSN Timpanogos chapter president Northern Utah Chapter We are working on a date for Ultrasound guided IV class. Date and time TBA. Pam Hardy, Chapter president
