2 Introduction The Social Enterprise World Forum is in its 8th year and returns to Europe for the first time since the launch in Edinburgh in The Forum will be held from the 1st to the 3rd of July at the IULM University which will also host a market place for social enterprises, a social enterprise speakers corner, and outstanding networking opportunities. SEWF expects social enterprise leaders, practitioners and supporters from over 40 countries to participate in the forum, offering huge opportunities to make connections and share experiences. Milan is a great host city, as the biggest industrial city in Italy and an international hub for designers, artists, photographers and models. Milan has an ancient city centre with historical palazzos combined with innovative modern buildings, which is why so many people from all over the world are attracted to the city s culture and glamour. The city serves as an incredible backdrop to this years SEWF which will focus on these key social enterprise issues: Social enterprise and job creation Developing social enterprise ecosystems Social finance and impact investing The role of the social enterprises in the fight against the poverty Social enterprises in agriculture and food production Growing a new economy CEIS has organised an annual study visit programme from the UK to international destinations since The programme s aim is to give participants an insight into social enterprise in different cultural and economic conditions as well as building valuable long term relationships amongst participants. Some great connections have been forged during these study visits contributing to the rich social capital in the social enterprise movement in UK and beyond, 2015 will continue this theme.

3 Introduction This year as the Forum is in Europe we have a number of options for consideration. The opening study visit programme will bring participants to Berlin where the focus will be mainly on food based social enterprises that employ disadvantaged people. Social enterprises in Berlin have built a niche and reputation in the food industry and related sectors where there is now both scale and depth. Our programme will visit social enterprise restaurants, industrial catering, events catering, social enterprise hotel and engage with the enterprise leaders to examine the journey and experiences behind this impressive social enterprise sector. Option 1 Berlin and Milan visit 7 days The cornerstone of our visit programme is the Social Enterprise World Forum itself where the study visit group will have an enhanced experience through a pre-conference Expo 2015 visit, international reception and managed transfers, accommodation and logistics to make the most of the networking opportunities with other participants. Option 2 Milan and Naples visit 6 days Following the Forum, CEIS are working with SEWF event hosts, ACRA to lead a study visit programme to Naples. Travelling south by high speed train, participants will switch cultures and climate from northern to southern Italy to engage with passionate Neapolitans and their social enterprises. Over the weekend the study visit programme will take in social enterprises in cultural and tourism sectors while getting insights into the role of social enterprise in meeting social challenges and revealing locations, issues and insights that one cannot experience as a visitor or tourist. Of course if participants wish to take part in both programmes, we have a combined option and this would enable participants to experience the contrasting German and Italian social enterprise approaches and how sector development is assisted or hindered by policy, support structures and market interventions. 4 Introduction A consistent feature of the annual visit programme has been the benefit of assembling a group of sector leaders and supporters and providing them with the opportunity to network. This includes critical analysis of the experience of individual enterprises, cultural and policy issues, how systems and solutions are transferrable to other countries and environments. Evaluations have consistently shown that the longest term benefits are from the relationships formed and this trip will continue that theme as the programme brings together international social enterprise leaders, policy makers and supporters to work, network and learn. The majority of participants will come from the Scottish and UK sectors but the engagement with SEWF speakers and international colleagues creates the conditions for a high energy, collaborative learning experience. The programme is suitable for social enterprise leaders and senior staff; senior support agency and network staff with the ability to cascade the learning and lessons across a range of agencies; social investors; public sector officials with a social enterprise remit, or Board leaders of social enterprises interested in expanding their knowledge of the sector and its potential. Previous visit programmes have: Influenced the shape and content of social enterprise policy and initiatives; Resulted in the creation of joint ventures between participants; Generated new business ideas and new organisation strategies; Established peer support groups for leaders who continue to support each other; Led to staff exchange programmes and strategic partnerships; Encouraged some participants to join social enterprise Boards or expand their professional development through education and training; Furthered the ability of national sectors to understand what works elsewhere and what doesn t in order to improve their own systems and performance

7 Part 2: Milan, Italy Wednesday 1st July Expo 2015 visit & SEWF opening ceremony Thursday 2nd July SEWF conference Friday 3rd July SEWF conference & travel to Naples by train (if opted for) The 2015 SEWF in Italy is the 8th edition of the Forum and its first time back to Europe after the launch in Edinburgh in The Forum will be held from the 1st to the 3rd of July, with the opening at the Auditorium of Milan Expo 2015 (to be confirmed), and the following days at the IULM University which will also host a market place for social enterprises, a social enterprise speakers corner, and plenty of networking space. Before and after the event, field trips to discover Italian social enterprises will be organised. In Italy and in Europe the widespread perception that the established models of development are no longer sustainable gave new energy to the debate on the role and the impact of social enterprises. The European Union declared the importance of social enterprise, launching in Strasbourg in February 2014 the Social Business Initiative, whose guidelines recognise the vitality and strength of these new models. The edition of Social Enterprise World Forum that the Foundation ACRA-CCS will organise in Milan in July 2015, will be the expression of the most interesting and the most innovative experiences worked out in Italy, in Europe and in the world. This forum will give social enterprises, policy makers, operators the opportunity to meet, confront and grow together. During the SEWF there will be 10 plenary sessions and 35 parallel workshops on four tracks: The ecosystem for the development of social enterprises Impact investing The role of the social enterprises in the fight against the poverty Social enterprises in agriculture

Agropoli The Coop. Agropoli created a community for people with disabilities in a property confiscated from criminal organisations thus giving it back to community as a resource and recreational space. Today the Coop. Agropoli primarily focuses on health and social care activities. A considerable number of the members of the cooperative (30 shareholders and employees) are people with mental or physical disabilities. 2) Restaurant N.C.O Nuova Cucina Organizzata Nuova Cucina Organizzata manages a pizza restaurant pioneering an innovation based on human solidarity. NCO employs youth and disadvantaged adults. NCO was created to address the needs and challenges of a community where a complex set of social factors threaten the individual s attempt at rehabilitation. 9 Study tour programme Part 3: Naples, Italy 3) Social Farm Fuori di Zucca You must be out of your mind to create a farm in a psychiatric hospital, but you have to be even crazier not to realize the great need to be reconciled with Mother Earth. What better place than a former psychiatric hospital to challenge the general madness that leads us to abuse our ecosystem... here you can eat and dine using the products of the land confiscated from the mafia. 4) Coop. La Paranza The social Coop. La Paranza managed by young people born in the Rione Sanità, Naples, aims at promoting the resources of the city. Highlighting the beauties of Rione Sanità, its history, its art, its culture, its cuisine and, last but not least, its faith, they created a virtuous cycle of development in a highly deprived area. We will visit the Catacombs of San Gennaro, historical and touristic site managed by the cooperative. 5) Chiku Restaurant Chiku Restaurant is managed by Italian and Roma women, proposing an innovative fusion between the Italian and Roma gastronomical cultures. It is created by the Social Enterprise Kumpania. The restaurant promotes citizens active participation and reconciliation between different cultures. 6) Dedalus Coop. (TBC) Dedalus Coop. manages different types of social services. It offers personalised solutions for socio-economic inclusion. It targets marginalised social categories focusing on job creation. The cooperative also targets migrants communities and promotes cultural integration.
