3 Preface Three years have passed since the first edition issued in There were no much changes in Vietnamese language but the Vietnam economy and society. To 2008, Taiwan was still regarded as one of the biggest foreign investors in Vietnam. Studying Vietnamese language is becoming the interest of lots of Taiwanese people, not only students but also businessmen. The demand of studying Vietnamese language in Taiwan is actually increasing. Such a demand and the need of having a textbook with Chinese included as the on-the-spot supporting tool to Taiwanese learners together with the accumulation of teaching experience and student s feedback over the last three years have led to this issue. The basic content which was similar to the first edition was remainded in the second edition. The changes focus on (1) adding Chinese; (2) adding photos; (3) removing some unnecessary words to shorten and simplify some dialogue sentences. As a material for beginners, the book is designed with the contents focused on pronunciation of Vietnamese language, accompanied with some simple dialogues. Basic grammatical points will be referred to in each lesson. The book includes nine lessons. The first four lessons are comprehensive descriptions of the vowel system, the consonant system, the tone system, and syllables and spelling. The next four lessons are dialogues. The last one is a review. The contents of the book were scheduled for teaching and learning in 18 weeks with 2 hours weekly on class. Because this is an important phase to the beginners, therefore, a direct guidance and assistance from instructors are strongly suggested. Page 3

11 Bài 4 Giới thiệu các âm tiết và cách đọc chính tả 第四課介紹音節和拼字 Unit 4 Introduction to Syllables and Spelling GIỚI THIỆU 介紹 INTRODUCTION Syllables in Vietnamese have the below frame: Tones Initial consonant Pretonal Central sound (the vowels) Final consonant (some consonant and semiconsonant (Source: Nguyen Anh Que, Vietnamese for Foreigners, 2000) Position of Initial consonants Most of consonants can stand in the heading place: It should be noted that some consonants, although comprise 2 letters in spelling, they are still considered as mono-sound, such as ch, kh, nh, ng, tr. When pronounced, only one sound is produced. E.g. cha, khó, nhà, For spelling, there are some cases in which the initial consonants can be written differently although they may have similar pronunciation: E.g. d in da thịt (skin and flesh) gi in gia đình (family) E.g. k before the vowels: e, ê, i kể chuyện (to tell story) c before the rest of the vowels E.g. gh before the vowels: e, ê, i ghi nhớ (to remember) g before the rest of the vowels E.g. ngh before the vowels: e, ê, i nghỉ (to have a rest) ng before the rest of the vowels Page 11

12 Position of Pretonal consonants u For spelling: - Written as u before the vowels: ê, iê, â E.g. quà, quê, quí, quất Position of Central sounds The vowels together with the tones may build up a syllable (in case there are no initial consonants or final consonants). As for the spelling: the vowel ă can be written as a if the final semiconsonants is u or y (mau, may). The dipthongs can be written as follows if there are final consonants: iê (yê) E.g. yên tĩnh (to be quiet) uô E.g. uống nước (to drink water) ươ E.g. ướp lạnh (to freeze) Position of Final consonants Vietnamese has 8 consonants (m, p, n, t, ng, c, nh, ch) and 2 semiconsonants (u, i) that can stand at the end of syllables. However, it should be taken notes the followings: - The consonants nh and ch never stand after the vowels o, ô and u - In position at the end of a syllable, k is always written as c - The semi-consonants i is always written as y if it placed in front of the vowel ă An illustration of how a 6-year-old Vietnamese child has been taught pronouncing a word: E.g. Em chào Thầy ạ! 老師好! - Most of the students say Em referred to herself/himself when talking with lecturers because in most cases, students are often younger than lecturers. In case of the students order than the lecturer, students just say: Chào Thầy. - To male lecturers, the title for calling is: Thầy ; to female lecturer, the title for calling is: Cô 2. Chào em! 你好! - In most cases, because students are often younger than lecturers, so the lecturer will reply to the student: Chào em - The lecturer will reply: Chào anh to the man, or: Chào chị to the woman in case of the student is not young, may be as old as, or may be older than the lecturer. 3. Thầy có khỏe không ạ? 老師好嗎? - có không? This structure used for expressing an interogative question: whether is or is not; whether have or have not; whether do or do not; whether there is or there is not; etc. Although the literature meaning of this question is whether the lecturer is fine or not but it is often understood as a polite greeting. 17 4. Chúng em chào Thầy ạ! 老師好! - With a group of 2 or over 2 students, any student can say chúng em. It is not necessary he/she is the leader of the group but it means that all the students in the group have the same attitude as the student greeting. 5. Chào các bạn! 你們好! - The word caùc never stands alone. In grammar, its function likes a determiner. It always accompanies some personal pronouns. - Lecturer usually replies to students các em. However, to express his/her attitude of friendly, lecturers sometime call students: các bạn 6. Còn các bạn? 你們呢? - The word còn used to express the meaning: And - E.g. Còn Anh? : Thanks for asking me, but how about you? 7. Mình cũng vậy 我也是 - mình a pronoun the speaker used to referred to himself/herself when talking, expressing a friendly attitude. - cũng too, also. Similar meaning with cũng thế ; cũng vậy 8. Chào em nhé - Chào is used both for saying hello and for saying goodbye - nhé is a particle used as an indication of friendliness; it also makes the tone of the phrase closely like Vietnamese s accent. 9. Dạ 是 - Dạ like Yes expresses an agreement with a respect attitude. During the dialogue, the listener can also repeat Dạ many times to express that he/she is focusing on the speaker s speech. 10. Tạm biệt 再見 - This is a formal form. Sometime, people only say Chào nhé or Chào (informal) Page 17

24 LƯU Ý 注意 NOTES 1. Chào chị! 你好 ( 對小姐 ) - To the woman, for the first time of meeting, people often call her chị as a formal pronoun. After knowing her name, for example: Lan, the speaker will call her chị Lan. To male, people will call him anh. Therefore, in case of dialogue 1, the woman says Chào anh to the man. 2. Đại học Sư phạm 教育大學 - In this case, Sư phạm is the name of the university where graduated students will become lecturers. In Vietnamese, the names of places, people, countries, things, animals, trees, etc always stand behind the subjects. 3. Rất hân hạnh được làm quen với chị! 很高興認識您! ( 對小姐 ) - The word được functioned as a auxiliary verb, supporting the main verb làm quen, expressing the passive mood. - với functioned as a preposition. làm quen với means making acquaintance with someone/something. 4. Rất hân hạnh được gặp anh! 很高興認識您! ( 對先生 ) - được gặp is similar to được làm quen. But in fact, được làm quen sounds more polite, especially when a man greets a woman. 5. Rất vui được quen biết bạn! 很高興認識你! - rất vui is more informal than rất hân hạnh. On the other hand, when someone wants to say that he/she satisfies something, he/she will says: tôi rất vui. 6. Bạn là sinh viên Trung Quốc phải không? 你是中國大學生嗎? - phải không? stands at the end of sentence making a Yes/No question, asking for the confirmation right or wrong. 7. Anh là người nước nào? 你是哪兒國人? - nào often stands behind a noun or at the end of sentence. Its existence making a question: Which one? nước nào? means: Which country?. người nước nào? means: Which country do you come from? or What is your nationality? Page 24

25 8. Anh làm nghề gì? 你做什麼工作? - gì often stands behind a verb or at the end of sentence. Its existence making a question: What?
