1 Principal s Message: Let s Sing the Song of Mirth to Celebrate the Charter of POCA Wong Siu Ching Secondary School Interact Club! 25th January, 2016 is the date of establishment of POCA Wong Siu Ching Secondary School Interact Club. It is our honour to have Mr. Peter Pang, District Governor, Ms Ada Cheng, Past District Governor and Mr. David Sarju, President of Rotary Club of Wanchai to officiate at the Charter Ceremony. On behalf of the school, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the Rotary Club of Wanchai for their immense support to our school. Since 2002, the Rotary Club of Wanchai has been offering scholarships every year to our students who have strong aspirations and potentials to take up an adventure-based English language course in England for three weeks. They have all come back not only with better English, lots of foreign friends, but also bigger ambitions to receive more challenges and stronger willingness to serve. To carry on with their good work in helping people in need, many Rotarian Scholars like Mr. Chu Hung Shing, Rotarian Scholar in 2009 and Ms Chu Chun Kit, Rotarian Scholar in 2011 actively participated in service programmes of the Rotaract Clubs in their respective universities. Still, a lot of our Rotarian Scholars, equipped with the broad perspective of the world and the strong leadership skills they have developed during their services have entered the multinational workplaces after graduation. For instance, Ms Wong Tan Tan, Rotarian Scholar in 2002 is now working in an Australian company with clients from different countries including the UK, USA, India, Indonesia, Japan and mainland China while Ms Lily Huang, Rotarian Scholar in 2003, works for a global firm in Singapore providing financial services for companies in over 50 countries. Without the patronage of the Rotary Club of Wanchai, our students would never have had the unique and eye-opening experience that has profound effects on their life. They are surely appreciative of the precious opportunities they have received. In addition to the scholarship scheme, we are receiving more learning opportunities from the Rotary Club. To strengthen our ties with them for the benefits of more Wong Siu Ching students, I am proud to announce that under the support and guidance again from the Rotary Club of Wanchai, the Interact Club of POCA Wong Siu Ching Secondary School has been established! The name of Interact Club may be new to some people. The word Interact is the blending of the words international and action. 2 for young people to serve the community and to create greater understanding and goodwill among people from all over the world. Through participating in various interesting and meaningful projects, Interactors are able to establish a network of friendships with local and overseas organizations, acquire leadership skills, cultivate personal integrity and develop a sense of respect for others. I hope that this new Interact Club of POCA Wong Siu Ching Secondary School will provide opportunities for our students not only to gain authentic experiences in serving the community, but also learn from their seniors, the Rotarians, for their own personal enrichment. With the guidance and sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Wanchai, our Interactors will have the privilege of forming partnerships with Rotarian leaders whereby they can join a variety of local and overseas projects. Working alongside with the Rotarians, Interactors can foster friendship with them, acquire leadership skills as well as develop understanding of the value of individual responsibility and hard work which are essential for their future studies and careers. I am sure the Interact Club of POCA Wong Siu Ching Secondary School can serve as an invaluable platform for our students to be trained to become all-round leaders like all other Rotarians who always show their care and concern for the community and the world. Finally, my sincere gratitude again goes to District Governor Mr. Pang, Past District Governor Ms Cheng and President Mr. Sarju as well as his fellow Rotarians for all their contributions and commitment to our school. Their continual support has indeed provided diverse learning opportunities for our students and made a difference in their lives. 4 Glories from the 67th Hong Kong Schools English Speech Festival Another year of hard work, another year of success. Students of POCA Wong Siu Ching Secondary School are always proud of representing the school and capturing excellent results from the Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival. This year, more than 60 students took part in the competition. Their results were, once again, encouraging. Most students claimed the Certificates of Merits in various events, namely, Solo-verse Speaking, Dramatic Duologue, Choral Speaking and Thematic Group Speaking. Our students captured Second Runner Up in Choral Speaking (Mixed Voice) and First Runner-Up in Thematic Group Speaking. Students from 4D Chan Wing Yan and 1A Lam Shing Chi won the First and Second Runner-up in Solo-verse Speaking respectively. 67 th Hong Kong School Speech Festival Prize Winners Competition entry Prizes Students Thematic Group Speaking 1 st Runner-Up S1 Students Choral Speaking (Mixed Voice) 2 nd Runner-Up S1 Students (1D) Solo Verse Speaking 1 st Runner-Up Chan Wing Yan (4D) Solo Verse Speaking 2 nd Runner-Up Lam Shing Chi (1A) Shakespeare Monologue 2 nd Runner-Up Sung Pui Yee (5E) Class: K120 2 (Choral Speaking Secondary 1 and 2 Mixed Voice) Place: 3 rd Clever integration of movement and speech. The threads were steadily build, sounding more mischievous each time. Well sustained unison in speaking. A cleverly managed presentation, clever blending of voices. Your appearance reflected the content of the words (grubby faces and clothes). An interesting interpretation reflecting the changing words and underlying threat. Class: N207 (Thematic Group Speaking Secondary 1 to 3) Place: 2 nd The team worked with enthusiasm and a sense of enjoyment Well done! This was a good group effort. Now think of other elements that you can include as this is thematic speaking and not an original play. There was some good staging. An enjoyable performance. Lam Shing Chi Class: K61 2 (Solo Verse Speaking Non Open) Place: 3 rd The conversation between the two characters was depicted using venal vocal line. The voice was flexible and well projected. The atmosphere was mostly serene. The face was expressive. The ending was conclusive. A good memory and confident work. Sung Pui Yee Chan Wing Yan Class: K214 (Shakespeare Monologue Non Open) Hermione in The Winter s Take, Act 3 Scene 2 Place: 3 rd You act with some feeling which I like. You started well but I wanted you to find deeper emotions to the climax at the end. Remember she is a Queen and has a lot of dignity. Class: K46 2 (Solo Verse Speaking Non Open Secondary 4 Girls) Place: 2 nd You have a good voice and you took time to speak clearly and to use some vocal color to share the changes of mood. 5 1 st Term English Debating Campaign Awarded 1 st Runner Up After a closely fought battle of wits and minds, the WSC English Debating Team lost to Ying Wa Girls school in the final of the New Territories & Kowloon Division 1 debating final held in Tsuen Wan at the end of the first term and was awarded 1 st Runner up. The WSC Debate Team (Vanessa Choi, Eric Ko and Krista Lam) stand proudly holding the runners up trophy between the two adjudicators, Mr. Gray and Ms. Chow. The three F.5 debaters from the 116 year old girl s school managed to convince the two adjudicators that they should take home the silverware after opposing the motion that ASEAN should sanction its member nations for environmental disasters that have international effects, based on the opinion that sanctions do not work and that ASEAN has no legal standing to implement any sanctions. The WSC team, made up of Vanessa Choi (4D), Krista Lam (3C) and Eric Ko (5C), put up a spirited defence of the motion using the case study of the annual Indonesian forest fires and resulting smoke and haze as a clear example of the problem at hand, and highlighting the ineffectiveness of the previous collaboration of ASEAN members to solve the issue. Despite the extensive research and supporting evidence, together with firm rebuttal demonstrating how effective sanctions can be in the case of Iran, it was not to be their day. In all my years as the coach of the WSC English debating team, I have never seen a greater performance from a losing team. They deserved more, claimed Mr. Healey. It was not all bad news as Eric Ko was awarded Best Speaker after an outstanding performance as 3 rd speaker. As one adjudicator, wrote on her score sheet, Absolutely brilliant rebuttal! Special thanks must also go to Maggie Chan (5B) and Samuel Fung (3C) who represented the school in earlier rounds. N.B.
