Much emphasis has been placed on the three 'E's- Economy, Efficiency and Effectiveness. Administrative assistants and office administrators are front-line staff of any organisations. They serve very important roles in managing and co-ordinating activities of various kinds in a company to enhance its performance, competitiveness and prosperity. With the rapid changes in office systems and fast development in office technology, it is imperative for them to be equipped with all-round administrative skills, latest techniques for office technology and effective communication skills so as to deliver quality work both efficiently and effectively. This Diploma Programme is therefore particularly designed for administrative officers, administrative assistants, office administrators, executives and secretaries who have basic training and experience in office work and are looking for career advancement to supervisory / managerial role in the office. Programme Structure Module Hours Introduction to Business 32 Office Management 32 Financial Accounting 32 Human Resource Management 32 Office Technology & Information Processing I 24 Office Technology & Information Processing II 24 Business Communication (English) 32 Business Communication (Chinese) 32 Admission Requirements Hold the Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE) or Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE) with passes in Chinese and English Language (Level 2 / Grade E or above) or have completed a secretarial course, or equivalent; and Be currently employed as Administrative Officer / Administrative Assistant / Office Administrator / Executive or Secretary with at least two years of working experience or equivalent; and Have completed basic Putonghua course (a minimum of 30 hours tuition)

2 Delivery Mode This Programme will be delivered by face-to-face instruction. Lectures and case studies will be arranged to facilitate participants learning. Medium and Methods of Instruction Chinese (Cantonese), supplemented by English, will be used for instruction (except Module 7, for which English will be used). Methods of instruction include: - Lectures - Hands-on Computer Workshops - Problem-solving Group Discussions - Group Presentations - Case Studies Award of Diploma To qualify for the award of the Diploma in Office Administration and Office Technology, participants must: (a) achieve an attendance rate of at least 70%; and (b) pass in the assessment of each module The performance of participants will be assessed by meands of class participation, presentation, assignments and examinations Teaching Faculty Qualified teaching staff will be drawn from local universities and the trade / industry. Tuition Fee The tuition fee for the entire programme covering 8 modules is HK$22,000. Participants are required to pay the tuition fee in 2 instalments, HK$14,000 is payable upon receipt of official notice of admission and HK$8,000 is payable before the commencement of the second semester. (Fee paid is non-refundable and non-transferable under any circumstances.) Some modules are now registering in the list of reimbursable courses for CEF purposes. Details will be available in due course Programme Starting Date, Time and Class Venue The programme will commence on September, subject to sufficient enrolments. Classes will be held on Tuesday and Friday evenings (7:00 pm to 10:00pm) at SCS Tsim Sha Tsui East Ocean Learning Centre, 98 Granville Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon or Central Learning Centre, Unit A, 1/F, Bank of America Tower, 12 Harcourt Road, Central

3 Application procedure A completed enrolment form must be accompanied by the followings: Copies of degree or other educational certificates; and An enrolment fee of HK$150 by crossed cheque or money order payable to "The Chinese University of Hong Kong" or by credit card. 4 Programme Content Module: Introduction to Business To provide participants with an overview on the general business environment in Hong Kong and the functional aspects of business management. Module Outline: Business and Economic System Industrial Structure in Hong Kong Forms of Business Ownership Trades & Commercial Transactions Production & Logistics Sales & Purchasing Import & Export Insurance Mainland China & Future of Hong Kong Business Module: Office Management To furnish participants with knowledge on supervisory concepts and skills and to equip them with knowledge on office setting management. Modules Outline: Structure of a Company and Role of Office Management Leadership General Office Management Procedures Leadership Human Behaviour & Motivation Basic Management Skills Office Ergonomics Systems & Procedures for Information and Records Keeping

5 Module: Financial Accounting To provide participants with an overview on the field of financial accounting as applied to business organizations in general. Modules Outline: Accounting Concepts Accounting Systems Financial Statements Interpretation of Financial Information Budget and Budgetary Control Stock Control Cash Flow Control Module: Human Resource Management To provide participants with practical and comprehensive knowledge on human resource management. Modules Outline: Essentials of Human Resources Management: - Job analysis & human resource planning - Performance evaluation and management Recruitment and selection Appraisal Employee compensation and benefits Organizational Behavior & Motivation Training and development Motivation Employee Relations Current Issues and labour law

6 Module: Office Technology and Information Processing I Contact Hours : 24 hours To provide participants with the basic skills and knowledge in computing which are required in order to perform their daily duties in business situation. Modules Outline: Computer Hardware and Microsoft Windows Usage Online Research Techniques Usage in Client Application Advanced Skills of Word Processing Software Advanced Skills of Presentation Software Multimedia File Manipulation Sound, Graphics, Video, Electronic Documents and File Format Recognition IT Ethics - Privacy, Intellectual Properties, Computer Abuse and Computer Security Module: Office Technology and Information Processing II Contact Hours : 24 hours Objective: To enhance participants with all the necessary skills and over-all knowledge in computing, which are required in order to fulfill their occupational needs in their office settings. Module Outline: Spreadsheet Software - Formula Authorising and Usage - Worksheets Manipulation & Formatting - Financial Analysis Database Management - Database and Table Creation - Sorting and Filtering - Database Queries - Forms and Reports Desktop Publishing - PDF File Creation and Manipulation

7 Module: Business Communication (English) Objective: To develop participants English communication skills to a level where they can use it more confidently in a variety of business contexts. Module Outline: Writing: various types of English business correspondence - memos, letters, reports, agenda, minutes, invitation cards/letters Reading skills: interpreting letters, reports and other types of documents Listening and speaking: business negotiation, oral presentations, conducting/participating in meetings, telephoning, dealing with enquiries and complaints Paralinguistics features: gesture, facial expressions, social manner Module: Business Communication (Chinese) Objective: To develop participants Chinese (Putonghua) communication skills in the workplace. Module Outline: Writing: various types of Chinese business correspondence - memos, letters, reports, agenda, minutes, invitation cards/letters, memorandum of understanding Reading: interpreting letters, reports and other types of documents in Chinese Listening and speaking Putonghua: general office communication, business negotiation, oral presentations, conducting/participating in meetings, handling complaints and enquiries, comparison of Cantonese and Putonghua terminologies Paralinguistics features: gesture, facial expressions, social manner
