Many living beings walk. People come and go on the Path. Some are full of joy; some scream and saddened; some are gentle and friendly; some are furious with beastly looks; some are forthright and heroic; some are short-sighted; some are wealthy like a millionaire; some are povertystricken. All these are the places where Bodhisattvas are rooted. Living beings get aided because of Bodhisattvas. Bodhisattvas have achievement because of living beings. If living beings don t exist, 38

2 慧 有 勇 氣 有 耐 性 有 恒 心! 二 九 年 六 月 二 十 八 日, 一 百 六 十 八 位 菩 薩 戒 子 或 帶 著 一 片 祝 福, 或 突 破 千 難 萬 難, 從 各 地 雲 集 而 來, 同 聚 聖 城, 為 的 是 要 圓 滿 一 生 重 要 的 時 刻, 所 謂 眾 生 受 佛 戒, 即 入 諸 佛 位, 位 同 大 覺 已, 真 是 諸 佛 子 早 期 聖 城 一 直 是 傳 梵 網 經 之 菩 薩 心 地 戒, 九 年 代 起 對 在 家 眾 改 傳 六 重 二 十 八 輕 之 優 婆 塞 戒, 此 出 自 優 婆 塞 戒 經 戒 經 上 讚 歎 : 善 男 子! 優 婆 塞 戒 名 為 瓔 珞, 名 為 莊 嚴 其 香 微 妙, 薰 無 不 遍, 遮 不 善, 為 善 律, 即 是 無 上 妙 寶 之 藏 這 期 間 戒 師 們 講 師 們 傾 囊 相 授, 戒 子 們 如 渴 思 飲 如 飢 思 食, 納 受 這 無 上 妙 寶 之 藏 六 天 下 來, 善 種 蒙 芽, 戒 子 們 深 受 益, 身 心 煥 然, 行 解 二 門, 更 上 一 層, 做 為 來 日 行 菩 薩 道 的 基 礎 優 婆 塞 戒 經 上 說 : 善 男 子! 如 佛 所 說 菩 薩 有 二 種 : 一 者 在 家, 二 者 出 家 出 家 菩 薩 名 為 比 丘, 在 家 菩 薩 名 優 婆 塞 出 家 菩 薩 持 出 家 戒, 是 為 不 難 ; 在 家 菩 薩 持 在 家 戒, 是 乃 為 難 何 以 故? 在 家 菩 薩 多 惡 因 緣 所 纏 繞 故 為 什 麼 佛 說 出 家 菩 薩 持 出 家 戒 是 為 不 難 呢? 因 為 住 在 道 場, 環 境 清 淨, 持 戒 不 難 ; 反 之, 在 紅 塵 滾 滾 的 世, 在 家 居 士 面 對 生 計 的 脅 迫, 舉 目 所 觸 多 諸 惡 因 緣, 持 戒 自 是 不 易 因 此 相 信 在 聖 城 六 天 中, 戒 子 們 在 行 持 上 是 沒 什 麼 問 題 的 ; 離 開 聖 城 呢, 才 是 考 驗 的 開 始 何 況 佛 陀 制 戒 是 在 三 千 年 前, 當 時 的 環 境 和 現 在 懸 殊, 如 何 將 戒 律 的 精 神 融 入 現 代 複 雜 的 環 境 中, 既 不 因 持 戒 惱 自 惱 他, 又 能 圓 滿 地 持 戒 這 須 要 以 智 為 前 導, 所 謂 悲 智 雙 運, 而 勇 氣 耐 心 恒 心, 也 都 是 不 可 缺 的 這 要 在 哪 裏 培 養 呢? 在 日 常 生 活 中 修 我 們 每 天 都 須 吃 飯 穿 衣 睡 覺, 但 不 懂 得 吃 不 懂 得 穿 不 懂 得 睡, 就 天 天 在 貪 瞋 癡 中 打 滾, 煩 煩 惱 惱 ; 懂 得 吃 懂 得 穿 懂 得 睡, 這 就 是 修 行 一 there will be no Bodhisattvas. There are highs, lows, and uneven spots when walking on the path. Not only should one have compassion but also wisdom, courage, patience and persistence. On June 28th, 2009, 168 Bodhisattva preceptees, either came with blessings or had to work through difficulties, gathered in CTTB from various places in the world in order to perfect the most crucial period of time in their life. It s said that When living beings receive the Buddha s Precepts, they realize Buddhahood. When their state is identical to Great Enlightenment, they truly become a disciple of the Buddha. In an earlier time, CTTB had been transmitting the Precepts of the Bodhisattvas mind grounds from the Brahma Net Sutra. Starting in 1990s on, it was changed to transmit the Six Major and the Twenty-eight Minor Upasaka Precepts. Sutra of Upasaka Precepts praised as such, Good man! The Upasaka/Upasika Precepts are called strands of gems and adornments. Their fragrance is subtle, wonderful and pervades everywhere. The Precepts shield us from unwholesome dharmas and function as the Vinaya of wholesome dharmas. They are a treasury of unsurpassed, wondrous jewels. During this period, all instructions impart the preceptees with all they have. Preceptees received this unsurpassed, wonderful jewel of treasure like thirsty people crave for water, and hungry ones crave for food. Within these 6 days, the wholesome seeds started to sprout. Preceptees, attaining the profound benefits from the Dharma, felt refreshed in both body and mind. Regarding the perspectives of understanding and personal practices, their cultivation went up a level and has become the foundation of practicing the Bodhisattva Path in the future! Sutra of the Upasaka Precepts says, Good man! As the Buddhas tell us, there are two kinds of Bodhisattvas. One is the lay Bodhisattva and the other is the monastic Bodhisattva. Monastic Bodhisattvas are called Bhikshus; lay Bodhisattvas are called Upasakas. It is not difficult for the monastic Bodhisattvas to uphold the monastic Precepts. It is difficult for the lay Bodhisattvas to uphold the lay Precepts. Why is that? It is because laypeople are entangled in and surrounded by many evil causes and conditions. Why did the Buddha say that it is not difficult for monastic Bodhisattvas to uphold the precepts? It is because left-home people live in the monasteries with a pure environment; therefore, it is not hard. On the contrary, maintaining the precepts becomes difficult for laity when being compelled by everyday life in the mundane world in addition to dealing with many evil causes and conditions everywhere they do. Hence, I believe that there were no problems when adhering to the precepts during the 6 days in CTTB. After leaving CTTB, that is when the tests start. Moreover, the precepts were established 3000 years ago by the Buddha. The surroundings back then and now really differ. How does one interfuse the spirit of the precepts in the modern complex environment and at the same time, not afflict oneself and others so that the precepts are maintained perfectly? This requires having wisdom as the foremost guiding force operating on both levels of compassion and wisdom. Courage, patience, and perseverance are SEPTEMBER 2009 VAJRA BODHI SEA 39

3 樣 是 日 常 生 活 瑣 碎 事, 若 知 善 用 其 心, 就 可 轉 其 為 有 意 義 有 價 值 的 高 尚 事 所 以 華 嚴 經 淨 行 品 云 : 若 諸 菩 薩 善 用 其 心, 則 獲 一 切 勝 妙 功 德, 於 諸 佛 心 無 所 礙 淨 行 品 有 一 百 四 十 一 個 願, 以 隨 事 巧 願, 防 心 不 散, 增 長 菩 薩 的 悲 行 和 智 行 為 宗 旨, 教 導 我 們 日 常 生 活 善 用 其 心 就 拿 飲 食 來 說, 人 都 好 吃 美 食 惡 麤 食, 淨 行 品 就 教 導 我 們 得 柔 軟 食, 當 願 眾 生, 大 悲 所 薰, 心 意 柔 軟 ; 得 麤 澀 食, 當 願 眾 生, 心 無 染 著, 絕 世 貪 愛 你 看, 這 不 就 是 在 行 持 菩 薩 的 三 聚 淨 戒 斷 惡 修 善 利 生 嗎? 逢 聖 城 開 光 三 十 週 年, 於 此 殊 聖 因 緣, 眾 多 戒 子, 共 聚 一 堂, 互 切 互 磋, 猶 如 優 曇 婆 羅 花 之 稀 有 難 得 ; 更 何 況 受 戒 之 後, 十 方 一 切 菩 薩, 都 是 我 們 的 同 學 伴 侶, 在 通 往 佛 國 的 路 上 並 不 孤 單! 因 此, 寄 語 戒 子 們 多 讀 誦 多 研 習 淨 行 品, 隨 事 發 願, 藉 事 練 心, 這 對 於 行 菩 薩 道 是 相 當 有 助 益 的, 特 別 是 在 紅 塵 滾 滾 的 世, 可 把 塵 勞 化 為 佛 事 眾 生 受 佛 戒 即 入 諸 佛 位 比 丘 尼 恒 教 文 / 譯 二 九 年 在 萬 佛 聖 城 舉 辦 為 期 一 週 的 在 家 菩 薩 戒 在 七 月 三 日 下 午 圓 滿, 正 授 一 百 六 十 八 位 初 發 心 向 菩 薩 道 學 習 的 在 家 菩 薩 這 次 報 名 求 授 的 戒 子 很 多 都 是 長 途 遠 到 而 來 而 且, 因 國 籍 種 種 的 不 同, 女 戒 子 授 課 的 語 言 就 有 五 種 中 also a must-have characteristics and attitudes. Where do we foster these qualities? We need to eat, wear clothes, and sleep everyday. However, if we don t know how to eat, wear clothes and sleep, we are rolling and swaying in greed, anger and delusion with much afflictions. Knowing how to eat, wear cloths and sleep is cultivation. Although these are trivial matters in daily life, if one knows how to skillfully apply your mind, they can turn into lofty matters with meanings and value. Therefore, the Pure Conduct Chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra says, If Bodhisattvas skillfully apply their minds, they will attain all kinds of excellent and fine meritorious virtues. Their minds will be unimpeded with regard to all of the Buddhadharma. There are 141 vows in the Pure Conduct Chapter. One brings forth the vows in accordance with everyday matters to prevent a scattered mind. The purpose is to augment the practices of compassion and wisdom and teach us to skillfully apply our minds in daily life. Take food for example. Everyone prefers delicious food and dislike coarse food. The Pure Conduct Chapter instructs us, When I obtain soft food, I vow that sentient beings Will be permeated by great compassion, So their minds are supple and soft. When I obtain coarse and rough food, I vow that sentient beings Will have no defiled attachments in their minds, And will sever worldly greed and love. You see, isn t this practicing to adhere to the Three Clusters of the Pure Precepts cut off evil, cultivate good and benefit living beings? Due to the 30th anniversary of CTTB s inauguration, many preceptees gathered together for this special cause and condition to learn from each other by exchanging views. This condition is likened to the appearance of the Udumbara flowers - rare and scarce. Furthermore, after receiving the precepts, all the Bodhisattvas of the ten directions are our studying companions. We are not lonely on the path to the Buddhaland. Hence, I d like to send a message to all the preceptees to read, recite and study the Pure Conduct Chapter more frequently so that we can make vows and train our minds when encountering matters. This is extremely helpful when practicing the Bodhisattva Path especially in the mundane world for it can transform the mundane matters into the Buddha s work. When living beings receive the Buddha s Precepts, they realize Buddhahood. One hundred and sixty-eight men and women successfully completed the laity Bodhisattva precepts training program and established 40

4 文 英 文 越 文 粵 語 還 有 寮 國 的 傜 族 語, 在 道 源 堂 同 步 翻 譯 上 課 學 戒 男 戒 子 則 依 中 文 英 文 越 文 等 不 同 語 言 分 班 授 課 在 一 百 三 十 一 位 女 戒 子 中, 從 年 紀 最 輕 的 一 位 未 滿 十 八 歲 的 培 德 中 學 女 校 學 生, 到 八 十 歲 的 長 者, 平 均 年 齡 是 五 十 歲 她 們 不 僅 向 孔 子 的 理 想 五 十 而 知 天 命 邁 進, 更 發 願 朝 向 菩 薩 大 道 學 習, 任 重 而 道 遠 ; 在 教 育 背 景 方 面 也 從 小 學 至 來 自 教 育 的 博 士 等 儘 管 國 籍 語 言 年 齡 教 育 文 化 背 景 的 等 種 種 不 同, 戒 子 們 都 希 望 能 依 隨 圓 融 無 礙 的 教 理, 秉 持 上 求 佛 道, 下 化 眾 生 的 精 神 而 趨 向 菩 提 一 星 期 的 熱 烤, 戒 子 不 但 沒 有 因 身 心 的 不 適 而 影 響 到 求 道 的 心 ; 而 且 從 早 到 晚, 都 穿 海 清 搭 幔 衣, 隨 出 家 眾 上 殿 過 堂, 正 如 五 觀 齋 堂 上 的 幢 幔 戒 莊 嚴 所 寫, 不 但 莊 嚴 自 己 也 莊 嚴 道 場 講 師 們 以 深 入 淺 出 的 道 理 來 詮 釋 條 條 戒 相, 如 何 能 善 巧 方 便 地 將 佛 陀 在 三 千 年 前 所 傳 授 的 戒, 應 用 在 現 代 複 雜 的 人 際 關 係, 讓 根 器 不 同 的 戒 子 們 得 以 層 層 解 脫 藉 由 這 次 的 戒 期 因 緣, 戒 子 們 互 相 提 攜 而 成 為 同 修 道 友, 也 有 好 幾 位 可 以 說 是 親 上 加 親 由 今 生 的 母 女 母 子 姐 妹 及 夫 妻 的 親 屬 關 係, 而 昇 華 成 為 盡 形 壽 菩 薩 的 親 眷 屬 一 位 母 親 提 到 遲 遲 未 受 菩 薩 戒 的 原 因, 是 兒 子 還 在 培 德 中 學 讀 書, 需 要 準 備 晚 餐, 今 年 兒 子 畢 業 了, 所 以 母 子 兩 人 同 期 受 戒, 可 以 一 起 受 持 六 齋 日, 互 相 成 就 這 次 的 在 家 菩 薩 戒 結 合 了 三 十 位 以 上 的 師, 在 緊 鑼 密 鼓 的 三 十 週 年 前 夕, 齊 心 齊 力 圓 滿 成 就 這 次 殊 勝 的 因 緣 ( 以 下 摘 錄 戒 子 們 的 感 言 ) 受 戒 經 驗 殊 勝 而 莊 嚴 二 OO 七 年 戒 子 戴 容 琴 萬 佛 聖 城 是 個 清 淨 莊 嚴 的 正 道 場, 遠 離 了 城 市 的 喧 囂, 有 的 只 是 花 香 孔 雀 的 叫 聲 梵 唄 聲 鐘 鼓 聲, 連 空 氣 裏 都 凝 聚 了 一 股 寧 靜 詳 和 的 氣 氛 除 了 良 好 their Bodhi resolve to embark on the Bodhisattva path. Many of them traveled from longdistances and various countries. In order to accommodate this diverse group, the lectures in Confucius Hall for women participants were spontaneously translated to cover five languages including Chinese, English, Vietnamese, Cantonese, and Mien (spoken by Yao Tribe of Laos). Lectures for the men participants were separated into three different classrooms based on Chinese, English, and Vietnamese languages. Of the preceptees, one hundred and thirty-one were female. The youngest of these, a student of Developing Virtue Secondary School, was under 18 years of age, and the eldest was 80 years old. The average age was 50, which coincides with the example of Confucius: "At the age of 50, I know the decrees of Heaven. These preceptees are attempting an even loftier goal by walking on the Mahayana Bodhisattva s path, notwithstanding the heavy responsibility and the long journey it entails. Although they cover a wide range of nationalities, languages, educations and cultural backgrounds extending from elementary to PhD levels they share in common the vow to follow the perfect and expedient teaching toward Bodhi, maintaining a spirit of seeking the Way to Buddhahood above, and transforming living beings here below. Undaunted by an entire week of scorching temperatures, they attended ceremonies and ate silently and formally in the dining hall wearing the black robe and the precept sash following the Sangha assembly, and their Bodhi resolve remained intact. Such conduct is a reflection of the good characters with which they were Adorned with Precepts, as described in the banner hanging in the Five Contemplation Hall. Not only did they adorn themselves, but also they adorned the Way-place. Dharma Masters who lectured on the precepts used simple principles to illustrate profound teachings. They also used expedient and skillful ways to explain how to apply in contemporary life the precepts transmitted by the Buddha 3,000 years ago, so that they can obtain liberation at various levels. Due to this special and auspicious occasion, the preceptees united as fellow cultivators to help each other, and some of them were able to become Dharma relatives, transformed from the relationships of mother and daughter, mother and son, older sister and younger sister, and husband and wife. One mother mentioned that the reason for her not taking laity Bodhisattva precepts earlier was because she had to take care of her son s dinner. Now her son has graduated from Developing Virtue Secondary School, and so they decided to take laity precepts at the same time. In this way, they will SEPTEMBER 2009 VAJRA BODHI SEA 41

5 的 受 戒 環 境, 傳 戒 委 員 會 還 為 戒 子 們 做 了 許 多 完 善 周 全 的 準 備, 使 得 整 個 受 戒 經 驗 殊 勝 而 莊 嚴 由 於 課 程 的 緊 湊, 戒 子 們 心 中 有 許 多 問 題, 未 能 及 時 提 出 有 兩 天, 師 慈 悲, 特 別 留 下, 犧 牲 自 己 的 時 間, 讓 我 們 盡 情 發 問, 欲 罷 不 能, 直 到 晚 課 快 開 始 時, 才 不 得 不 停 這 種 無 我, 利 益 眾 生 的 精 神, 是 最 好 的 身 教, 是 真 正 的 菩 薩 精 神! 最 後 一 天 早 上 傳 戒, 是 我 們 的 大 日 子, 相 信 每 位 戒 子 都 發 了 菩 提 心, 要 行 菩 薩 道, 虔 誠 地 希 望 得 個 好 戒 體 當 鼓 聲 響 起 時, 我 的 心 也 隨 之 震 憾 鼓 動, 請 師 儀 式 隆 重 而 莊 嚴 我 們 專 注 地 聽 三 師 開 示, 隨 著 唱 誦, 大 聲 地 回 答 能 持 方 丈 告 訴 我 們 如 果 你 能 心 包 太 虛, 把 慈 悲 擴 大 到 整 個 虛 空, 所 得 的 戒 體 也 愈 大 猶 記 觀 想 的 那 一 刻, 眨 眼 即 逝, 不 曉 得 自 己 究 竟 得 了 戒 體 否 ; 不 過 方 丈 的 另 一 句 話 也 發 人 深 省 他 說 有 無 得 到 戒 體, 端 看 你 看 到 眾 生 是 否 歡 喜, 這 真 是 一 個 檢 視 自 己 的 好 方 從 今 以 後, 我 們 遇 到 不 如 意 的 人 事 物, 是 否 不 再 發 脾 氣, 不 埋 怨, 而 能 做 到 上 人 所 說 真 認 自 己 錯, 莫 論 他 人 非 ; 他 非 即 己 非, 同 體 名 大 悲 菩 提 心 全 發 出 來 二 OO 七 年 戒 子 何 麗 珠 在 萬 佛 聖 城 公 佈 要 傳 授 菩 薩 戒 時, 我 就 開 始 做 功 課 了 因 為 我 覺 得 這 一 生 中 如 果 沒 有 在 師 父 上 人 的 道 場 受 菩 薩 戒 的 話, 我 就 白 活 了 我 對 這 件 事 情 非 常 的 謹 慎, 也 抱 著 很 大 的 期 待 每 次 師 上 課 時, 我 都 很 認 真 聽, 有 時 候 真 的 很 累, 但 是 還 是 打 起 精 神 認 真 聽 在 台 灣 時, 師 對 我 講 : 在 受 戒 那 一 瞬 間 妳 要 非 常 非 常 的 清 淨, 認 真 聽 師 講 的 每 一 句 話 當 天 受 戒 當 唱 到 香 讚 時, 我 就 誠 support one another to keep the six vegetarian days and to accomplish their cultivation. This Laity Bodhisattva Precepts session to which more than thirty Dharma Masters contributed their effort was completed on the busy eve of CTTB 30th anniversary. (Excerpts from the preceptees' sharing of experiences below) The Supreme and Sublime Experience of Taking the Precepts 2007 By Rong-Chyn Dai, Preceptee from 2007 CTTB is a pure, holy and proper way place, which is far from the noise of the cities. The only things that filled with the place were fragrance of flowers, sound from peacocks, chanting, drum and bell. Even the air gives the atmosphere a sense of peace and calmness. Besides the wonderful environment, the Committee of Transmitting Precepts did such a comprehensive preparation for the preceptees, which allowed us have the most wonderful experiences. Due to very tight class schedule, many of us still had lots of questions regarding the Bodhisattva Precepts in our minds. Some Dharma Masters knew the situation and kindly offered to stay with us after class. They sacrificed their personal time to answer our questions and stayed until right before the evening recitation began. The selfless spirit of benefiting others is really a personal teaching on how to become a Bodhisattva. Finally came our big day, the actual precept transmission. The transmission ceremony was held in the morning of the last day. I believed all of us have already brought forth the Bodhi Resolve, made vows to practice Bodhisattva Path and sincerely wish to receive supreme precept substance. When the drum started to sound, I was aspired by the beat in the heart. We listened carefully to what Dharma Masters instructed and repeated after them. When they asked Can you uphold these precepts? We answered clearly and loudly with Yes, we can. The Abbot of CTTB taught us if your mind can contain the entire empty space - meaning if you extend your kindness and compassion to the whole universe and Ten Dharma Realms, the precept substance you get should be perfect. He also said There is a way to check to see if you have received the precept substance. That is when you see living beings, are you joyful? I think that is a profound line, which stimulates deep thinking. From now on, if I meet people, things, events that don t accord with my wish, will I no longer get angry? Will I no longer complain and truly put the Venerable Master s instructions into practice, that is Truly recognize your own faults; Don t discuss faults of others; Others faults are just my own: Being one substance with all is called Great Compassion. 6 心 觀 想 所 有 十 方 諸 佛 菩 薩 蒞 臨 會 剎 那 間 萬 佛 聖 城 的 整 個 天 空, 聚 集 所 有 諸 佛 菩 薩 與 賢 聖 僧, 那 感 覺 真 是 很 棒, 感 受 到 所 有 戒 子 都 在 諸 佛 菩 薩 的 歡 喜 下 領 受 這 個 戒 體, 非 常 的 感 恩 當 每 一 條 戒 唸 出 來 的 時 候, 我 都 大 聲 說 能 持 非 常 願 意 去 度 所 有 一 切 眾 生, 要 去 行 菩 薩 道, 那 種 菩 提 心 全 發 出 來 了 之 前 方 丈 和 尚 教 如 何 觀 想, 所 以 當 三 番 羯 摩 時, 唸 第 一 次 時, 我 就 觀 想, 要 度 所 有 的 有 情 眾 生 與 無 情 眾 生, 都 能 夠 離 苦 得 樂, 我 真 的 非 常 願 意 第 二 次, 觀 想 大 白 傘 蓋 就 在 空 中, 愈 來 愈 大, 剎 那 間, 那 香 味 整 個 籠 罩 我 的 身 體, 整 個 大 殿 都 在 那 香 味 中, 我 說 不 出 來 那 香 味, 第 一 次 聞 到 這 麼 棒 的 香 味, 非 常 感 動 第 三 次 的 時 候, 願 一 切 善, 從 頂 流 入 我 的 身, 這 個 地 方 是 最 重 要 的, 所 以 我 非 常 誠 心 地 去 納 受 真 的 講 不 出 那 種 感 覺 隔 天, 我 整 個 人 覺 得 很 平 靜, 跟 我 上 次 來 聖 城 的 感 覺 不 一 樣 上 次, 很 捨 不 得 離 開 聖 城, 有 不 想 再 回 到 娑 婆 世 的 感 覺, 但 是 這 一 次 卻 特 別 平 靜 清 楚 地 知 道 未 來 的 方 向 二 OO 九 年 戒 子 張 允 芸 為 了 讓 戒 子 暸 解 受 持 菩 薩 戒 的 意 義 與 正 確 的 知 見, 總 為 戒 子 安 排 一 系 列 的 課 程 透 過 師 們 深 入 淺 出 的 講 解, 慢 慢 了 解 菩 薩 戒 的 殊 勝 與 莊 嚴, 這 是 生 生 世 世 的 發 心, 是 成 佛 的 必 經 之 路 原 來 成 佛 不 是 名 詞, 而 是 動 詞 成 佛 不 是 那 麼 遙 不 可 及, 只 要 受 了 菩 薩 戒 並 一 直 維 持 初 發 心, 嚴 謹 守 戒, 就 可 以 在 道 業 上 有 顯 著 的 進 步 何 其 幸 運 可 以 受 持 菩 薩 戒, 進 入 成 佛 速 成 班 來 學 習 上 課 的 內 容, 最 記 得 師 所 強 調 的 為 人 不 為 己, 終 究 是 佛 體 ; 為 己 不 received these precepts from the monasteries the Venerable Master established, then I would have passed my life in vain without meaning. I worried there would be some obstacles hindering my vows. Therefore, I worked very hard and was looking forward to this event. When the Dharma Masters lectured, I listened attentatively. Sometimes even when I was extremely tired, I still tried my best to focus on the lectures. In Taiwan s Monastery, one Dharma Master told me that I had to purify my mind and listened carefully to every single word while receiving the precepts. The day we received the precepts, I sincerely contemplated and welcomed Buddhas and Budhisattvas of the ten directions to come to the Dharma Assembly when chanting Incense Praise. It was incredibly wonderful that the Buddhas, the Bodhisattvas and the Worthy Ones were all gathering in the sky on top of CTTB. I felt amazingly blessed. It felt like the Buddhas and the Bodhisattvas merrily transmitted the precept substance to all the preceptees. While reciting every single Bodhisattva precept, I willingly committed and said I will uphold the precepts. I brought forth my Bodhi resolve wholeheartedly and was eager to cross over all the living beings. Abbot specially taught us how to contemplate. When we had three Kamavachana and recited the precept the first time, I contemplated that I am willingly cross over both sentient and insentient beings so that they will leave suffering and attain the bliss. The second time, I envisioned the great white canopy appearing in the sky and growing bigger and bigger and suddenly I was surrounded by the fragrance. The whole Buddha Hall was adorned with the fragrance. It was sweet-scented beyond the description of my words. I was very moved since I had never smelled such fragrance before. The third time, I sincerely received the precepts and prayed that all wholesome Dharma would be poured in from my head into my body. It was an unimaginable experience beyond description. I felt so peaceful the next day, it was different from my last visit to CTTB. Last time, I was reluctant to leave CTTB, just like I didn t want to return to the mundane Saha world. This time I felt particularly serene after I took the precepts. Knowing the Future Direction Clearly Yun-Yun Zhang, Preceptee From 2009 In order to let preceptees understand the meaning and proper views and knowledge of upholding the Bodhisattva precepts, DRBA arranged a series of classes for them. 7 為 眾, 終 究 白 搭 命 以 及 入 道 要 門, 發 心 為 首 ; 修 行 急 務, 立 願 居 先 短 短 的 偈 頌, 詮 釋 了 菩 薩 道 的 真 諦 與 修 行 方, 一 切 以 利 他 心 為 出 發 點, 心 有 多 廣, 可 以 達 成 的 願 就 有 多 廣 短 短 四 天 的 課 程, 一 下 子 就 結 束 了, 在 正 式 受 戒 的 前 一 日, 有 懺 摩 的 儀 式 當 時 不 知 怎 麼 地, 內 心 的 感 觸 有 如 滔 滔 巨 浪 般, 一 波 波 的 湧 現, 既 歡 喜 自 己 有 善 根 得 以 受 持 菩 薩 戒, 又 想 到 此 次 聖 城 之 行 是 多 麼 的 不 容 易, 還 想 到 這 些 的 戒 文 怎 麼 這 麼 熟 悉?! 莫 非 前 生 已 受 持, 怎 麼 今 生 到 這 麼 大 年 紀 才 又 受 持? 隔 世 之 迷 怎 麼 這 麼 深? 這 麼 可 怕! 感 恩 諸 佛 菩 薩 與 上 人 不 離 不 棄 的 守 護, 引 導 我 一 步 步 地 修 行, 真 是 無 以 報 佛 恩 報 上 人 恩! 心 中 大 慚 愧 大 懺 悔 的 意 念, 源 源 不 斷 的 升 起, 淚 水 滂 沱 而 下 受 持 在 家 菩 薩 戒, 是 生 命 的 重 新 開 始, 從 此 開 了 心 眼, 了 解 心 地 的 重 要, 每 一 起 心 動 念 一 舉 一 動 都 要 心 知 肚 明, 不 可 再 懵 懂, 一 切 應 以 利 益 眾 生 為 出 發 點 回 到 熟 悉 的 台 北, 六 重 二 十 八 輕 戒 成 為 生 活 的 準 則, 佛 在 於 知 行 合 一, 唯 有 一 步 步 的 實 踐, 方 能 有 更 進 一 步 的 體 驗 與 修 正 因 為 心 態 的 不 同, 整 個 待 人 處 世 的 心 量 也 不 同 了, 相 對 的, 生 活 中 種 種 的 執 著 與 煩 惱 亦 隨 之 減 少 努 力 專 注 於 當 下, 讓 視 野 不 再 執 著 於 眼 前, 清 楚 地 知 道 未 來 的 方 向 未 來 的 路 途 或 許 遙 遠, 一 如 戒 本 所 云 在 家 菩 薩 持 在 家 戒, 是 乃 為 難 何 以 故? 在 家 之 人, 多 惡 因 緣 所 纏 繞 故 但 是 不 怕 慢 只 怕 站, 只 要 方 向 與 方 正 確, 一 心 行 進, 終 究 抵 達! the Bodhisattva precepts. This is the resolve brought forth in life after life and is the inevitable path one must tread to realize Buddhahood. Originally, Buddhahood is not a noun but a verb, instead. Buddhahood is not too far away to be reached in the future. As long as one receives the Bodhisattva Precepts and maintains the initial resolve and adheres to the precepts strictly, one will see obvious progression in one s practice of the Path. How fortunate we are to be able to receive and uphold the precepts and also participated in the Class for Quickly Attaining Buddhahood. As for the content of the class, I remembered most clearly that Dharma Masters really emphasized on Rising above oneself, it eventually is the essence of the Buddhas; Being for oneself and not for others, one passes the life in vain after all. The key to start one s practice, the bring forth the Bodhi resolve is most primary. The eminent task in cultivation, making vows is number one in priority. With a short verse, the Dharma Master expounded the truth about Bodhisattva Path and the method of practice. In everything we do, the starting point shall be benefiting others. However broad your mind is how vast your vows will extend and to be realized. The short four-day class went by and ended quickly. On the day of formal transmission of the precepts, there was a Kamavachana ceremony. At that time, not knowing why, there were so many feelings and thoughts mixed in like billows dashing up one after another. I was delighted that I had such root of goodness to be able to uphold the Bodhisattva precepts since making the trip to CTTB was not easy. The precept-text also seemed so familiar to me. Is it possible that I have already maintained the Bodhisattva Precepts in the past life? If so, why is that I am taking the Bodhisattva Precepts in such old age in this life? The confusion between this life and the previous one is so deep and scary. I am grateful that the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas never gave up on guarding me and guiding me to cultivate the Path step by step. I have no way to repay the kindness of the Buddhas and the Venerable Master Hua. The sense of great shame, remorse and repentance poured forth unceasingly, tears welled up in my eyes. Upholding the Bodhisattva precepts is the incipience of a new life. From now on, my heart opened up and understood the importance of the mind. We must know very clearly every rising of our thoughts and movement of mind and behaviors. We shall no longer be muddled and do everything with the intention to benefit others. Having returned to Taipei, the six major and twenty-eight minor precepts become the standard of everyday life. The essence of Buddhism is to walk your talk. Only with step-by step personal practice can one further experience Buddhadharma and rectify ourselves. Due to the difference in the attitude, my mind changed when dealing with people and matters. Subsequently, various kinds of attachment and afflictions also lessened along with this change. I tried really hard to focus on the present moment not being preoccupied so that my vision is not limited to what is immediately in front of me. I know clearly the direction for the future. Although the road might be a long one, it is like the precept book says, It is difficult for the lay Bodhisattvas to uphold the lay Precepts. Why is that? It is because laypeople are entangled in and surrounded by many evil causes and conditions. However, one fears not being slow but being stagnate. So long as the direction and the methods are correct, one will eventually arrive at the destination when cultivating single-mindedly with progress. 44
