5 808 5 steps to a place at Carlisle College Application 2. Interview Apply online at carlisle.ac.uk, by post or in person at the College or at a College event. You will receive a letter within 10 working days, inviting you to come to the College to discuss the course you have applied for with a tutor from your chosen course area. 3. Offer 4. Acceptance Don t forget to accept your place at College. After your interview you may be made a conditional offer of a place at Carlisle College. This may be dependent on your exam results. Alternatively we may offer you an interview with our careers/advice and guidance officer to look at the options available to you. 5. Enrolment You will be invited to an enrolment session at the end of August and will be given your start date along with information on how to apply for financial support. 7 12 Improving Maths and English Despite their importance in gaining any kind of work, around a fifth of young people are never taught Maths and English after failing to achieve a GCSE pass at school. At Carlisle College we will help you achieve your GCSE in maths and English because we know how important it is for your future. Carlisle College has many years of experience working in partnership with leading employers throughout the North of England and South West Scotland. The Work Experience Team works across the College to help students find relevant, realistic and enjoyable opportunities. 8 Student Services So you ve made the smart move and applied for a course at Carlisle College Here is some of the support and advice you will need to make the most of your time with us. Financial Advice and Support Looking forward to coming to College but worried about money? Don t be. We have funding available to help you out and a team of friendly staff who can answer any questions or concerns you may have. This includes questions about transport, course fees, Further Education (FE) & Higher Education (HE) loans, debts & budgeting and much more. Full time further education students who are under 19 at the start of their course receive FREE tuition. Students in receipt of Job Seekers Allowance (including partner where the claim is joint) or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) in the work related activity group may be eligible for FREE tuition. Help and advice on all aspects of transport and financial help for eligible students will also be available. Advice on student loans for HE including fees and living expenses. Information on FE loans for adults aged 24+ studying at Level 3 or higher. Additional help and financial support may also be available from the Bursary Fund or the 19+ Discretionary Learner Support Fund. The 24+ Advanced Learning Loan If you are over 24 and starting a further education course at Level 3 or above on or after 1 August 2016 you may qualify for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan for courses starting in September It s easy to apply for, household income isn t taken into account and there is no credit check. Importantly you won t have to pay anything back until your income is over 21,000 per year. The loan will be paid directly to the College on your behalf. You will not need to pay anything up front for your course fees. The College receives an allocation of funds to help with the cost of registered childcare and to support you with travel costs while you are at College. This fund does not support the provision of kit which may be required to those aged over 24 studying at Level 3. Army Bursary Scheme If you are aged between 16 and 32, applying for a Further Education course at Level 2 or above and are hoping to start a career in the Army at the end of your course, the Army Bursary Scheme may offer financial support for your studies. Parents / Carers Information Your son or daughter will meet regularly with their Tutor who will offer support on many issues that can affect their student life and experience. These meetings include group and one-to-one sessions and cover topics including personal safety, health and social issues. The tutorial programme, which is delivered by our team of Progress Coaches, also helps students prepare for the next stage of life, whether it is work, another course or University. Progress Reviews Course Tutors will organise these one-to-one reviews during the year to help monitor student progress. Support is given to ensure that every student has the best chance of success and can achieve their full potential. It is also an opportunity for students to discuss any issues they have at College. Parents Evening Parents and Carers (for full time students under the age of 18) will be invited to meet with staff on Parents Evenings. This will include an opportunity to discuss progress at College. Written reports will be sent to Parents and Carers of students under the age of 18. Additional Support Staff are on hand to discuss a variety of support options to help you succeed in your studies. Our staff are trained to offer support in: Severe to mild learning difficulties Deaf and hearing impaired Specific learning difficulties Basic Skills needs Blind and visually impaired Exam concessions Before starting a course, your son/daughter will take an initial assessment. This is to ensure that they are on the right course at the right level. It can also help identify any additional support needs they may have. Students can benefit from a choice of vocational areas over the year, to help inform career choices, or stay within their chosen subject areas according to their career aims. 11 20 Accounting Accredited through the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT), these courses are designed to prepare students for a wide range of career opportunities within the accounting and finance sectors. The courses focus on giving you the practical skills that are used in accounting or financial work and provide the perfect starting point to develop a career or provide a platform for career progression. Accountancy skills are very highly valued by employers, with finance professionals playing a key role in any business sector. Students are supported by a team of highly qualified and experienced staff to develop these skills. AAT Level 2 Certificate Accounting The course covers the basic principles of ledger accounting and methods of recording financial transactions, using both manual and computerised accounting systems and is suitable for people with little or no previous accounting qualifications or experience. AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting or employment as an Accounts Administrator, Finance Assistant or Trainee Accounts Technician with a salary ranging up to 24,000 per year. once qualified to technician level, salaries can reach up to 30,000 a year AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting This course will further develop the skills gained at Level 2 by looking at the preparation of basic accounting statements and returns. This course is suitable for people with some previous experience in accounting or bookkeeping or who have completed the Level 2 qualification or similar. AAT Level 4 Diploma in Accounting, higher education or employment including Assistant Accountant, Audit Trainee, Credit Controller or Financial Assistant with a salary ranging up to 24,000 per year. AAT Level 4 Diploma Accounting This higher level course further develops the knowledge and skills gained at Level 3 and looks at more detailed financial and costing statements produced by accountants. This course also explores more specialist areas of accounting including tax and external auditing with a choice of optional units being available. David Mandle and Wendy Carr Accounting Tutors Self employment through AATs Members in Practice scheme with a salary ranging up to 26,000 per year or higher education. 12 22 Applied Science These courses are designed to give students the knowledge and skills required to work in the science industry. They combine a mixture of classroom based study and practical lab sessions to ensure students are able to transfer their skills into employment or further study. Level 2 Extended Certificate Applied Science This course has been developed to allow students to explore scientific principles in a vocational context. Students will gain an understanding of how these principles are applied in practice. Units include the living body, practical scientific project and investigating a crime scene. Level 3 Applied Science or employment at a junior level as a Research Assistant. Senior scientists can earn 45,000 per year Level 3 Applied Science This course gives students the opportunity to acquire technical skills, knowledge and understanding of the many areas of science. Each student will be given the opportunity to develop a range of techniques and personal skills essential for a career in science. Students can progress into higher education or employment as a Medical/Laboratory Assistant with the NHS or a Research and Development Assistant in the nuclear industry. Carlisle College of the Arts gives you access to top-level facilities and teaching to explore your creativity and decide on the route that best suits your skills. Our recently opened Carlisle College of the Arts, has been designed to meet the ever changing demands of the very diverse and fast moving art industry, providing state of the art equipment to ensure a learning experience in a real life setting. Level 1 Pathways to Employment Introduction to the Arts This course is designed as an introduction to the Arts, exploring areas such as media, performing arts, music and arts & design. You will take part in variety of projects that will help to develop your employability, teamwork and personal skills as well as subject specific practical skills. This course is ideal for those who need to practice their practical skills or are unsure of the area of the arts that they would like to go into in the future. 14 Access to Higher Education Diploma Art and Design This course provides a unique opportunity to build up a portfolio of work and prepare you for entry to Higher Education and the creative arts. The programme starts off with an introduction to drawing and continues with projects in a variety of art and craft based areas including a period of study which focuses on the practice and theory of art and design. This course is for students who may not have the formal entry requirements but whose life skills are a suitable alternative. You will build a portfolio and prepare to enter Higher Education. A range of arts based courses at University this course is a recognised progression qualification by universities. Level 3 University of the Arts London Foundation Diploma in Art and Design This intensive one-year course is designed for those who have completed some academic study and gives an opportunity to further explore and refine creative skills and develop a portfolio to progress to university or employment. 16 30 Level 3 Diploma Beauty Therapy (General or Massage route) This course provides you with a range of skills and experience at an advanced level, and is delivered using a combination of practical and theory work. This course includes body massage and Indian head massage, self-tanning and electrotherapy treatments. Employment in this exciting industry offers a diverse range of experiences including hotel and spa work, salon work or even working as a beauty therapist on a cruise ship. Level 4 Diploma Salon Management This course provides a solid foundation in management skills which can be applied in the Hair & Beauty sector or transferred. You will also have the opportunity to develop practical specialist skills in therapies, hairdressing and beauty. Higher Education or into employment at management level. Level 3 Diploma Theatrical, Special Effects, Hair and Media Make-Up This course has been specifically designed to develop your practical skills as a make-up artiste to an advanced level through a variety of techniques and is ideal for those with an interest in theatre or film make-up. Our range of business courses, delivered by highly qualified tutors, can offer you the skills, knowledge, experience and confidence needed to make it in this competitive industry. Students will gain a real insight into the various aspects of this sector, with units ranging from events management to becoming an entrepreneur. Level 2 Pathways to Employment - Business This course gives you the knowledge and an understanding of the qualities that are essential for a successful business. Units include: The Marketing Environment, Customer Service and undertaking an Enterprise project. Level 3 in Business or enter employment including Marketing Assistant with a starting salary around 12,000 or Finance Assistant with a starting salary around 14,000. business is one of the largest employment sectors in the country with a diverse range of job opportunities Level 3 Business (National or Extended Diploma) This course covers all the major aspects of business and is suitable for all students who want a career in finance, marketing, human resources, management or accounting. The vocational elements of the course can give you a head start, whether you choose to go straight into employment or continue into Higher Education. The national diploma is a one year course, covering 8 units and is equivalent to 2 A Levels. The extended diploma is a two year course, covering 13 units and is equivalent to 3 A Levels. The role of the construction industry is to improve, maintain and preserve the built environment in which we all live and work. Our Level 1 course will give you a taster of what it would be like to work with children through a mixture of creative activities, work experience and portfolio work. Level 2 and Level 3 courses give you the opportunity to go out into professional early years settings and gain practical experience during the course, to compliment your classroom learning and make it come to life! Engineering is a very diverse sector and the evidence is all around you - the clothes we wear, the food we eat, the games we play, the cars we drive and the buildings we live in are all the product of a process which included engineering in their manufacture. Engineering combines the fields of science and maths to solve real problems that improve the world around us.
