3 Introduction Every school has its own story to tell. The context in which teaching and learning takes place influences the processes and procedures by which the school makes decisions around curriculum, instruction, and assessment. The context also impacts the way a school stays faithful to its vision. Many factors contribute to the overall narrative such as an identification of stakeholders, a description of stakeholder engagement, the trends and issues affecting the school, and the kinds of programs and services that a school implements to support student learning. The purpose of the Executive Summary (ES) is to provide a school with an opportunity to describe in narrative form the strengths and challenges it encounters. By doing so, the public and members of the school community will have a more complete picture of how the school perceives itself and the process of self-reflection for continuous improvement. This summary is structured for the school to reflect on how it provides teaching and learning on a day to day basis. Page 1

4 Description of the School Describe the school's size, community/communities, location, and changes it has experienced in the last three years. Include demographic information about the students, staff, and community at large. What unique features and challenges are associated with the community/communities the school serves? (EMS) is located within the town of Eclectic, Alabama, in the east central part of Elmore County, which lies in central Alabama. Situated between towns of Tallassee, Wetumpka, and Alexander City, the population is 1,160 and has remained fairly steady for several years. The town is a common stop off for people that are en route to Lake Martin, a 44,000-acre lake with over 750 miles of wooded shoreline. An artificial reservoir, Lake Martin was formed by the construction of Martin Dam on the Tallapoosa River and is a popular recreation area for water sports, camping, and golfing. Manufacturing and retail businesses, such as Madix, Inc. and Fuller Warehouse and Gin, along with the school system serve as the major sources of employment for Eclectic. However, many citizens commute to nearby cities such as Montgomery, Wetumpka, and Prattville. The average commute time is around 33 minutes. Building construction is also a common local occupation. According to recent data, the estimated median household income of Eclectic residents is $30, % of the population has a high school degree or higher; 9.7% of the population has a bachelor's degree or higher; 2.5% of the population has a graduate or professional degree; 6.4% of the population is unemployed; 11.6% of residents live in poverty. The nearest hospitals are Community Hospital in Tallassee, Elmore County Hospital in Wetumpka, and Russell Hospital in Alexander City. All of these hospitals are within 20 miles of the town. However, the town does have both a local physician and dentist office. The closest colleges that offer opportunities at higher education include Auburn University Montgomery, Faulkner University, Alabama State University, Tuskegee University, Auburn University, and Southern Union Community College. These institutions as well as several technical schools are within 50 miles of the town. Successful annual events include the Cotton Festival and Eclectic Trade Days. As with any small community, the social lives of the citizens revolve heavily around the school's events, including athletics, and church related activities. has an enrollment of 520 students in grades 5-8. Each grade currently contains between 120 and 135 students. Students arrive at the school after attending Eclectic Elementary School and then proceed to Elmore County High School upon entering the ninth grade. All three schools are located in close proximity. Many students live outside the city limits of Eclectic. However, just like the population of the town, enrollment has remained fairly steady over the last three years. Average daily attendance for the school hovers around 96%, and every effort is made to promote daily attendance. At, we have 252 students who receive free lunch and 58 students who receive reduced lunch. These numbers represent a combined 59.62% of the school's population. The school employs two full time administrators, counselor, 26 certified teachers and nine support staff. The Mission Statement of is as follows: Excellent staff, providing a caring safe environment, that Motivates students to reach their civic duties and academic potential, to Succeed in life. In order to achieve our mission, it is imperative that our school use the best available resources. At, our goal is to have sufficient human, financial, physical, and material resources to support our mission and goals as they stand now, and also plan our vision for the future. Our school has been blessed with an outstanding faculty and staff. Our school employs a faculty and staff that meet the qualification standards set forth by the Elmore County Board of Education, the state department of Education, and National Standards. Each staff member has achieved a level of success in their assigned field and they use those skills that they have attained to better our campus. In order to maintain the highest commitment to excellence, faculty and staff are required to earn a minimum number of credit hours during each five year period of employment. Our administration spearheads this effort and gives the faculty opportunities at professional development, through training, workshops, and seminars. The performance of each teacher is also evaluated by the administration through Page 2

5 classroom observations, the evaluation process, and professional learning plans. The mission assigned to the members of also requires that we be good stewards of the funds that we receive and be accountable for their usage. Our School administrators, with input from the staff, budgets our financial resources. Staff and administrators submit the budget forecasts for the upcoming year. Special care is given to our mission, our vision, and school improvement when deciding on needs. The administration and bookkeeper monitor all financial transactions, bank account information, and keep an accurate record of our expenditures. Any funds raised by the school, or in the name of the school, such as athletics or by clubs and organizations, is approved by the administration. Our physical resources are maintained by the administration staff to ensure that our students have the best opportunities to excel. The facilities at adhere to the appropriate laws, codes, structural standards and guidelines. The campus has safety programs and plans in place that are to be followed in a crisis situation. Each teacher is aware of the proper procedures and plans for events such a tornado, fire, bomb, or intruder on the school campus. The administration prepares the staff with regularly scheduled drills on these events and each teacher has the information posted in their classrooms. Maintenance, cleaning and upkeep is performed regularly to ensure that the facilities are a clean, safe, and orderly environment for learning to occur. Page 3

6 School's Purpose Provide the school's purpose statement and ancillary content such as mission, vision, values, and/or beliefs. Describe how the school embodies its purpose through its program offerings and expectations for students. The vision statement for our school is as follows: will be a community of stakeholders that nurtures academic excellence and demonstrates leadership in character development for all students. This vision was developed and implemented by the administration and staff to represent our mission to provide relevant, engaging, positive learning environments where students are empowered to realize their self-worth through continuous academic, social, and emotional growth. The teachers at our school expect all students to be held to high standards of courses of study by following guidelines set by the curriculum department using Alabama's Course of Study. employs a variety of student performance assessments to determine achievement, growth, and progress academically. We follow state guidelines by administering the Alabama Reading and Math Tests (ARMT+) every spring. The data from this assessment is analyzed and disaggregated by administration and staff. This information is then reviewed in monthly data meetings in order to ensure that students are progressing academically. Students who perform at non-proficient or partially proficient are identified as At Risk. Individual Learning Plans (ILP) are developed for these students in order to help them progress appropriately. Students in grade eight are given the EXPLORE test in order to determine college readiness. All students in grades five through eight will be given Global Scholar, a universal screener used to indicate At Risk students. Several programs designed to help promote academic excellence are incorporated at. Classworks, a computer-based program, is designed to align instruction to students' individual needs. The skills for Classworks are linked to the Common Core Standards. Students are tested, and Individual Learning Plans are developed specific to their individual needs. Teachers are able to track individual progress and remediate as needed. We also use researched based programs such as Alabama Reading Initiative and the Alabama Math, Science, and Technology Initiative which allows for individualized instruction, the use of technology, and hands-on activities. Other programs offered to students that help promote academic excellence are the gifted program and the 21st Century Program. Page 4

Additionally, describe areas for improvement that the school is striving to achieve in the next three years. has several notable achievements. We strive to make connections to the home and community in meaningful ways. We inform parents of their child's educational progress and keep them informed of their child's learning progress in several ways. We have annual Title I Parent Meetings to inform parents that EMS is a Title I school. We have Parent Report Day that allows parents to meet with their child's teachers and conference with them concerning grades and classroom behavior. We have parent volunteers who work in the library, teacher workroom, and help teachers in the classroom. Parents receive monthly, sometimes weekly, phone calls through Cisco messaging system. We use , Facebook, and a school website to inform parents of any upcoming events. This year the school began a weekly newspaper that is online as well as distributed to the students in homeroom. Students are responsible for the newspaper, even editing. Although several standards are rated as strengths, EMS has some areas in need of improvement. These areas include having a grading and reporting system that is based on clearly defined criteria that represent the attainment of content knowledge and skills are consistent across the grade levels and courses. All staff members participate in a continuous program of professional learning; however, professional development could be enhanced with more school funding. We make efforts to improve in this area with the use of Professional Development 360. In an effort to maintain our strengths, EMS will continue to use the county pacing guides and apply Common Core State Standards. Special Education services, monitoring of individuals through school committees, and grade level meetings is an ongoing process. Teachers will continue to turn in weekly lesson plans to administration. EMS will continue to host events such as Title I meetings, family nights, and parent report day. Teachers will continue to meet formally and informally to coordinate the curriculum for vertical and horizontal alignment. Page 5

8 Additional Information Provide any additional information you would like to share with the public and community that were not prompted in the previous sections. is dedicated to the growth of students, by providing a long range of activities and opportunities that extend beyond the classroom walls. The school serves as a 21st Century Community Learning Center location. This program is voluntary, enrichment program that provides students with homework time, academic strengthening and physical fitness. The 21st Century Program is a family and community based program, which provides opportunities for involvement and participation for all family members, as well as community leaders. In 2012 a Student Council was voted on and elected to represent the student body. This gives the students a voice that can be heard on major decisions that take place throughout the school year. In addition to the Student Council, the WATP (We Are The Panthers) school newspaper was started. This provides weekly updates to local and world news, as well as, providing an opportunity for students to write, edit and publish the newspaper. The music and arts program at EMS has also grown in This year an on site band instructor was put in place to provide students with an opportunity begin early instruction toward band participation. EMS supports and provides many athletic opportunities throughout the school year. Aligning with AHSAA (Alabama High School Athletic Association) guidelines, EMS fields students in football, cheerleading, girl's and boy's basketball, volleyball, softball, baseball, track and wrestling. Student driven academic and social clubs are also available for involvement. is dedicated to providing opportunities for all stakeholders to be involved in the educational process.
