She will share motivational ways to help children see themselves as part of a new literacy movement and how all the adults who care for and love children can make the reading world possible for each and every child. How to PARP: The Secrets to Running a Successful PARP Program A nuts and bolts workshop perfect for those people who are new to the program or for returning chairs who are interested in hearing new ideas. Reading in a Techie Driven World Have you noticed that reading is not what it was when you grew up? In this technological world our children are reading on their phones and other personal devices. Whether from a hardcopy book or an electronic medium, reading is still reading. What has changed and how using these devices can help your child bookmark, look up vocabulary and even have it speaking to them right from their device will be discussed. Plus, learn some tips on how to incorporate technology into your PARP program. Come join us and bring your device or hardcopy of choice. Presenter: Bonnie Russell, NYS PTA President C. Public Libraries: Your Passport to Reading Learn how your public library can partner with you for a successful PARP program. Find out how to plan and execute a reading program, how the resources of the public library can support you, and the best reading tips for parents. Presenters: Tara Kholes, Head of Children s Services, Brentwood Public Library; Monica Powers, Head of Youth Services, Brentwood Public Library and Celia Vollmer, Liaison, Brentwood Public Library D. Unlock Your Reading DNA Reading is a multi faceted skill made up of numerous strands. Take an in depth look at the 5 foundational components to reading. Nassau Region PARP winner Join the energetic PARP team from Oceanside School #5 for an overview of how they created their PARP program exploring children s books to film adaptations for both in the classroom and home. Appropriate for Grades 1 6. Presenters: Mary DiGiovanna and Fran Perpero, PARP Co Chairs, Oceanside School #5 Winter Wonderland PARP 2015 Blizzard Warning, A Flurry of Books is Coming to Signal Hill Suffolk Region PARP winner The PARP Chair from Signal Hill from Half Hollow Hills District will outline their successes during their three week program featuring themed tracking board, assemblies and creative activities. Appropriate for Grades Pre K 5. Presenter: Caroline Rafferty, PARP Co Chair, Signal Hill Elementary B. Expand PARP Programs Beyond the Early Years Discuss the benefits of involving all members of the family as well as methods to address barriers to parent/family involvement. Explore programs for older children and how they can also be involved in a successful program. Presenters: Lori Fontana, NYS PTA Marketing Specialist and Tina Shek, Suffolk Region Family Engagement Chair C. Literacy: A Foundation for Success Explore the definitions of literacy; what is it; what does it really mean and what are the facts?! Presenter: Tamalin Martin, C.A.S., M.S. in Special Education, NYS PTA Literacy Specialist D. Leveraging Bilingualism as an Asset in the Life of a Child Explore the positive aspects of exposure to more than one language and how this can be leveraged in order to help a child improve reading, writing, listening and speaking. Ideas on how to involve ESL parents into your PARP program will also be discussed. Presenter: Dr. David Rose, Director of World Language and ESL, Oceanside School District Closing Session: Q & A Moderated by Joan Wabnik, NYS PTA Programs Coordinator and Stephanie Avidon, NYS PTA PARP Specialist This is the time to ask all of the questions you still have before you go back and plan/implement your PARP program. Donations of new and gently used children s or young adult books will be accepted. All books will be donated to a local charity. Registrants that have paid in full and cancel before the registration deadline will receive a full refund, less $25 processing fee. Registrants cancelling before the deadline, that have not paid their registration fee, will be billed $25 processing fee. Upon receipt of event registration, registrant is responsible for the full event fee whether they attend or not. No refunds will be given for cancellations received after the registration deadline or for no-shows. Registrants will be billed for any unpaid amounts due. Registrants may send a replacement at no additional charge. Registrants or replacements that do not show up to the event will receive no refund. Registrations received after the registration deadline will only be handled as on-site registrations. NOTE: All on-site registrants must pay in full at time of registration, no invoices will be issued.
