3 Q1. What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships refer to on-the-job training leading to nationally recognised qualifications, developed by industry. They are work-based learning programmes designed to give employees the skills they require to carry out their job competently and meet the needs of their organisation. Q2. What does an Apprenticeship involve? An Apprenticeship includes the following components: A minimum of 16 hours per week paid employment A knowledge based element A competence based element Transferable or Functional Skills A module on employment rights and responsibilities. All apprentices must develop Functional Skills that support them in their job, which can include communication skills, ICT skills, Maths and English. Depending on the Apprentice s existing qualifications and experience, they could be exempt from some of these requirements. Q3. Who can do an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships can be used to train new and existing employees. Funding is available to train Apprentices (see Q9 for information on help with funding). Q4. How is the Apprenticeship Programme made to suit my business? Business representatives from the relevant industry sector work with the Sector Skills Council to develop course content to ensure the training is relevant to your industry. TyneMet also works with you to tailor each programme to suit your specific requirements. Q5. Where does the training take place? Most or sometimes all - of the training is on the job in the workplace at times to suit the needs of the business. Employees often spend a number of hours or a day per week at the College making use of our specialist facilities and working with trainers. Q6. What does TyneMet College contribute? We will provide a Business Development Consultant to manage your account and offer support and guidance. They will work closely with you to: Help you to decide which Apprenticeships are right for your workforce and explain the funding that may be available to you Help to advertise for and interview candidates for an Apprenticeship with our free recruitment service, or support existing staff into Apprenticeship Programmes Agree a training plan with each Apprentice Manage the training and evaluation to nationally-recognised quality standards. Q7. What are the different levels of Apprenticeship? 1. Intermediate Apprenticeships (equivalent to five good GCSE passes) Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ Level 2, Functional Skills and, in some cases, a relevant knowledge-based qualification. Each Apprenticeship has the following elements: knowledge based, competency based, Functional Skills and Employer s Rights and Responsibilities. 2. Advanced Apprenticeships (equivalent to two A-level passes) Advanced Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ Level 3, Functional Skills and, in most cases, a relevant knowledge-based certificate. To start this programme, students should ideally have five GCSEs (grade C or above) or have completed an Intermediate Apprenticeship. 3. Higher Apprenticeships Higher Apprentices work towards work-based learning qualifications such as an NVQ Level 4 and 5 and, in some cases, a knowledge based qualification. Beyond this, individuals can progress to higher education, including university degrees and beyond. Q8. What are my responsibilities as the employer? As well as a minimum of 16 hours a week employment, you must give the Apprentice clear terms and conditions of employment and an induction into their role. TyneMet College can give advice on such issues. You are also responsible for paying your Apprentices wages, based on the National Minimum Wage (currently 2.65 per hour for Apprentices). Before the course begins, a health and safety visit by the College must also take place to ensure the environment is safe for the student. Q9. Can employers get help with funding? Funding towards the cost of training Apprentices is available from the National Apprenticeship Service. The size of the contribution varies depending on your sector and the age of the candidate. If the Apprentice is aged years old, you will receive 100% of the cost of the training; Schemes are available for apprentices aged 24+ to help with grants. Q10. How can I find out more? For details of how TyneMet can help you make the most of your existing staff and gain new team members via Apprenticeship Programmes Call or business@tynemet.ac.uk or visit our dedicated employer s website employers.tynemet.ac.uk
