1 Salem Academy Christian Schools SUPERINTENDENT JOB DESCRIPTION I. GENERAL DESCRIPTION Overview: Contracted by: Time Required: Responsible to: Supervises: Evaluation: Type of Position: The Superintendent is the Chief Executive Officer of the school and is charged with the responsibility for the efficient and effective operation of the school by the Salem Academy Christian School Board of Trustees (BOT). The administration and supervision of the educational activities of the school are delegated by the Board to be carried out according to the adopted policies and procedures. The Salem Academy Christian School BOT - Salaried; each contract shall be for one year duration with annual renewal upon successful completion of an evaluation by the BOT. Full-time, 12 month contract The Salem Academy Christian School Board of Trustees The total operation of the school including students, parents, facilities, faculty, staff. The Superintendent s performance will be evaluated by the BOT in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on evaluation of professional personnel and this job description. Details are found in the Salem Academy Christian Board of Trustees Policy Manual. Salaried II. QUALIFICATIONS A. EDUCATIONAL 1. Shall be a college graduate from an institution recognized by Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) with a minimum of a Master s Degree. 2. Shall have a current state administrative certificate, ACSI certification, or be certifiable. 3. Degree may include graduate training in administration, and curriculum development, business and management. 4. Shall be competent in the supervision of the teaching/learning process 5. Other qualifications may be added by the Board as deemed appropriate. 6. Exceptions because of unique areas of expertise will be evaluated by the Board at the time of application.

2 B. SPIRITUAL 1. Must be a "born-again" Christian who knows the Lord Jesus Christ as Savior. (John 3:3; 1 Peter 1:23) 2. Must be a spiritually mature and growing Christian who is active in his/her Christian life, with an understanding and commitment to the philosophy of Christian Education, compatible with that of Salem Academy Christian Schools. 3. Accepts, without reservation, Salem Academy Christian School s Statement of Faith. 4. Gives testimony that Christian education is a spiritual calling, and Christian education at Salem Academy Christian School is God's direction for his/her life for this school year. 5. Affirms the Bible is God s Word and the standard for faith and daily living. 6. Manifests by daily example, the highest Christian virtue serving as a Christian role model (1 Timothy 4:12), both in and out of school, to pupils (Luke 6:40), parents, and fellow employees. Instruction is not only through rational explanation of formal subject material, but even more powerfully through word, deed, example, and shared experience. 7. Agrees to be a moral ethical role model in judgment, dignity, respect, and Christian living. This includes the development of the Fruits of the Spirit in life (Galatians 5:22-23), and refraining from engaging in personal areas of liberty in situations where an offense may be created within the Body of Christ. (I Cor. 8:9; Eph. 5:18; Col. 3:17; Titus 2:7-8; I Thess. 5:22-23; and James 3:17-18) 8. Agrees to be a Christian role model by faithfully attending, and financially supporting, a local church whose fundamental beliefs are in agreement with the Salem Academy Christian Statement of Faith.(Hebrews 10:25) 9. Agrees to accept the Board's interpretation of biblical standards for sexual behavior. Any sexual misconduct, including, but not limited to premarital, extramarital, or homosexual activity; sexual harassment; use or viewing of pornographic material or websites; and sexual abuse of children is forbidden and violates the employment requirement of being a Christian role model. (Romans 12:1-2; I Corinthians 6:9-20; Ephesians 5:1-11; I Thessalonians 4:3-8; I John 3:1-3) 10. Agrees the unique roles of the male and female are clearly defined in Scripture, and affirms Romans 1:24-32 condemns the homosexual lifestyle. (Romans 12:1-2; 1 Cor. 6:9-20; Ephesians 4:1-11, 5:3-5; 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8; 1 Timothy 4:12; 2 Timothy 2:19-22; 1 Peter 1:15-16, 2:15-17; 1 John 3:1-3) 11. Shall be a Christian role model in the family and financial areas. This conduct shall include, but not be limited to, one who manages his own family and finances well. (I Tim. 3:4-5; I Tim. 5:8) NOTE: The

3 Superintendent is expected to have his/her eligible, school-age children enrolled at Salem Academy Christian School if a program exists to meet their needs. 12. Shall have the spiritual maturity, academic ability, and personal leadership to train up a child in the way he should go. NOTE: In the Spiritual Qualifications area, deviation from Scriptural standards, or failure to comply with the Christian role model guidelines, will be grounds for disciplinary action and may lead to termination. C. PERSONAL 1. Demonstrates an enthusiasm for life and learning with a good sense of humor. 2. Has a genuine love for children. 3. Possesses a high energy level, personal stamina, and a willingness to work hard. 4. Possesses sound organizational skills and practices. 5. Uses acceptable English in written and oral communication; speaks with clear articulation. 6. Demonstrates the character qualities of courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctuality. 7. Meets everyday stress with emotional stability, objectivity, and optimism. 8. Maintains a personal appearance of cleanliness, modesty, good taste, and agreement with school policy. 9. Submits respectfully and is loyal to constituted authority. 10. Develops and maintains rapport with students, parents, and staff by treating others with respect, friendliness, dignity, consideration, and impartiality. D. EXPERIENCE 1. Should have a minimum of five years of educational experience with at least three years of experience in the area of administration. 2. Must have an ability to oversee financial matters in a wise, transparent and prudent manner. E. LEADERSHIP 1. Should exhibit the Biblical model of a leader with a servant s heart. 2. Should possess leadership qualities to direct the total ministry of the school. 3. Shall have a love for people, an ability to lead in a positive manner. 4. Have an ability to work well with other adults (faculty, staff, parents and Board). 5. Must be self-motivated, well-organized. 6. Possess skills in public speaking and written communication. 7. Must have a balance of tact, diplomacy, and social awareness.

4 F. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPM ENT 1. Should demonstrate a commitment to continued professional growth. III. RESPONSIBILITIES: A. TOTAL PROGRAM He/She shall provide supervision for the total operation of the school. 1. Write and/or revise Teacher Contracts, Teacher Handbooks, Parent/Student Handbooks, Athletic Handbook, and consult on Board Policy Manual. 2. Responsible for compliance with all regulatory agencies. 3. Plan, with assistance of other administrators, the joint all-school functions. 4. Seek to maintain the unity of the Spirit while promoting the spiritual growth of the students and staff. (Col. 1:27, 28; 3:16, 17) B. SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP He/She is responsible to help develop and mature the spiritual leadership of all those associated with the school (I Tim. 2:2). 1. Provide spiritual leadership to teachers, parents, and students by example and instruction 2. Encourage harmony among the staff. 3. Be personally involved in a church. 4. Promote the development of a servant's heart among the staff to facilitate ministry to students, staff, and parents. C. SUPERVISION OF PERSONNEL He/She is responsible for a program of supervision and evaluation of all employees in the performance of their duties, utilizing the administrative team to supervise their areas. He/She is also responsible for recommending the dismissal of staff members to the Board. 1. Encourages educational growth through teacher certification with the State or ACSI and the pursuing of graduate courses in their appropriate fields. 2. Provides up to date job descriptions for each position on the staff. 3. Oversees the effective supervision of programs and personnel. 4. Encourages continual spiritual growth of each staff member by example and by counsel. D. PROCUREMENT OF PERSONNEL He/She works with the building principals to interview, evaluate, and recommend candidates to be hired. 1. Recommends the creation or elimination of staff positions to Board. 2. Oversee the notification of staff openings to the appropriate agencies (i.e. college placement services, local churches, Christian employment agencies, etc.). 3. Oversee the hiring of all non-administrative staff.

May suspend any support personnel for just cause, including violation of employment agreement, insubordination, incompetence, and/or continued failure to comply with Board policy or administrative rules and regulations. 5. May authorize, supervise, and terminate volunteer positions of service in curricular and/or non-curricular areas. 6. Communicates the philosophy and practice of Christian education among new and existing employees. E. CURRICULUM He/She has the major responsibility for the development and coordination of the curriculum. 1. Develops and implements the school curriculum with the assistance of the building principals. 2. Over-see s the documentation of student achievement (i.e. Terra Nova Achievement, SAT scores, AP, etc.). 3. Approves all textbooks and supplementary materials. 4. Recommends to the Board when major curriculum changes are appropriate. 5. Scope and sequence of each subject area will be developed and revised as necessary. 6. Oversees the ordering of textbooks. F. SCHOOL BOARD He/She is responsible to interpret the school operation to the BOT and Board action to school personnel. 1. Shall submit an oral report at every regularly scheduled Board meeting on the status of the school, its achievements, and problems. 2. Attends all Board meetings unless excused by the Board president. 3. Facilitate decision-making by providing information about the school and its function. 4. Keep the Board abreast of finances, enrollment, personnel, curriculum, and accreditation. 5. Recommend policies for further development of the school. 6. Administer the policies established by the Salem Academy Christian School BOT. G. BUDGET He/She shall oversee the preparation of an annual budget for approval by the Board. 1. Works with teachers, department heads, and administrators in developing budget expense projections. 2. Develops enrollment projections for the entire school. 3. Works with the Finance Committee and Director of Finance in the development of possible tuition models. 4. Works with the Finance Committee to develop the draft budget to present to the full Board. 5. Supervise the daily operation of the school and disbursement of the approved annual budget. 6. Works with the Director of Finance to see that the accounting system is organized in satisfactory manner.

6 H. LONG-RANGE PLANNING He/She shall oversee developmental programs in curriculum, staff, buildings, and equipment as part of a long-range plan for the total school. 1. Estimate costs of such programs and suggests possible means of financing. 2. Involve parents, educational consultants, and community people in the planning process. 3. Keep abreast of current research being done in the field of education. 4. Be cognizant of legal requirements upon private schools by local, county, state, and federal agencies. I. STUDENT ADMISSION He/She shall oversee the admissions process. 1. Shall have the final voice for acceptance or rejection of any student. 2. Shall supervise the work of the Director of Admissions. 3. Works with the building principals who interview with students in their respective buildings. J. COMMENCEM ENT He/She shall work with the high school principal and senior class advisors in planning the commencement program. 1. Approve the baccalaureate and commencement speakers. 2. Award diplomas to graduates. 3. Give any assistance needed in planning and supervising the commencement exercises. K. PHYSICAL PLANT He/She is responsible for the creation of an environment conducive to good education. 1. Recommends to the Board with respect to major repairs or new facilities needed. 2. Provides a safe environment for students and staff. L. PUBLIC RELATIONS He/She will work closely with the Board and Director of Development office, to produce an effective program of interpreting the school to the public. The responsibilities will fall into three areas: image-raising, fundraising, and friend-raising. 1. Image Raising a. Salem Academy Newsletter Oversee the development of each publication. b. Community Involvement Is involved in church and community events. c. Any other ways to promote the school and raise the communities level of awareness. 2. Fund Raising a. Takes an active role in the support and encouragement of these programs through effective public relations.

7 b. Shall have effective follow-up, i.e. writing letters of acknowledgment for gifts to the school. c. Shall oversee monthly contacts with donors and prospective donors. d. Shall oversee the coordination of special appeals for specific projects of the school. e. Shall be the lead in direct contact with major donors. 3. Friend Raising a. Shall seek to keep open lines of communication with the area churches. b. Availability of school musical groups for church concerts and community ministry, i.e. Rotary Club, nursing homes, etc. c. Interprets to the citizens of the community the purposes, accomplishments, needs, and goals of the school. d. Represents the school to the community at large. M. STAFF DEVELOPMENT He/She shall plan, coordinate, encourage and ensure funding opportunities for development of the Salem Academy Christian School staff. 1. Involve staff and faculty in formulating recommendations, policies, and budget. 2. Facilitates opportunities for the professional improvement of the faculty and staff. N. ACCREDITATION He/She is responsible to oversee our schools compliance with outside agencies (i.e. accreditation, state requirements, etc.). 1. Shall submit annual reports to the various agencies. 2. Shall oversee the Accreditation Self-Study. 3. Shall coordinate the accreditation onsite visit. 4. Shall report to the Board on all aspects of accreditation. O. MISCELLANEOUS He/She assumes any other responsibilities assigned by the Salem Academy Christian BOT and/or necessary to the effective and efficient operation of the school. Revised February 2014
