1 Lancaster Bible College Department of Church and Ministry Leadership Procedure for Oversight of Internship Students The mission of the Department of Church and Ministry Leadership is as follows: To strategically equip servant leaders for the local church and Christian organizations by discovering personal uniqueness and developing practical experience. To this end, it our desire to develop a partnership with churches who share this mission and who are willing to invest in the lives of young adults who are being equipped to serve in the local church. It is my responsibility to provide an academic environment where students are challenged to grow in their knowledge of ministry. To that end I focus strongly on the HEAD and what the students need to know about ministry. The curriculum requirements are designed to provide the students with the content necessary for life and ministry. However, gaining knowledge is not the end in and of itself. It is also important to address issues of the HEART. Scripture teaches us that we are to guard your heart because it is the well spring of life. Through regular chapel attendance, Life Connect Groups, mentoring opportunities and issues discussed in class, matters of the heart are regularly addressed. One of the key components to every class is a character contract that each student must fulfill which addresses personal growth and competencies. The third area that is so critical to a student s equipping for ministry is the area of the HANDS. Practical training where skills can be put into practice is essential for each student in order for their education to be complete. This is where you come in; without YOU this area of equipping would be missing. This unique and exciting opportunity requires two overarching qualities. First, it necessitates a willingness to invest in a student s personal and spiritual growth. And, second, it entails a desire to devote time and energy to the student s development of ministry skills. Without question, overseeing a student intern will demand sacrifice on your part as the supervisor. There are also many rewards in seeing a how a student grows personally and professionally. There is also the satisfaction in knowing that you have contributed to the kingdom of God by investing your life in the life of another, perpetuating the intent of 2 Timothy 2:2. A student is responsible to invest a minimum of 150 hours in the Internship. Two-thirds of those hours should be spent in hands-on ministry, fulfilling the objectives and obligations of the Internship. The remaining hours should be dedicated to completing the reading and writing assignments that are an integral part of the Internship experience. What are the responsibilities of the Internship Supervisor? To meet with the student weekly for a minimum of 1 hour To set goals and objectives with the student that are to be achieved during the course of the Internship o These goals should reflect a level of responsibility and involvement that stretches the student s leadership abilities To require appropriate reading of ministry materials that would enhance the learning experience. At least one book should be assigned to the student that will enhance his or her learning experience To provide a variety of ministry settings where the student can exercise leadership and ministry skills To evaluate the student s ministry competencies and personal qualities

2 To confirm that the student has a grasp of religious, theological and cultural trends To create the opportunity for the student to prepare and teach at least one lesson where he or she is formally evaluated To include the student in a church leadership meeting where issues of church governance can be observed To model Christlike character and servant leadership to the student To be transparent, sharing your shepherd s heart with the student Included with this packet is a ministry checklist that is representative of the kinds of things that students can do. It is not inclusive, but is a guideline. Also included in the packet is a character contract. The student is expected to complete a character contract during the course of the Internship. It would be beneficial if you would serve as the accountability partner for the student in the completion of the contract. A syllabus and two evaluation sheets are also in the packet. Please complete both evaluation forms and return them to me. One form should be completed approximately midway through the Internship and the other form should be completed at the conclusion. The Internship must encompass a minimum of 150 hours and can occur over the summer or during the course of a school year, beginning in September and running through May. It is optional as to whether or not the student receives a stipend while performing the Internship Thank you for your involvement in this most important ministry opportunity. The kingdom of God is multiplied as we invest in those people who are willing to invest in the lives of others. Our model is Christ Himself, who developed individuals who understood the necessity and value of serving and obeying the Great Commission. You should have: The supervisor information letter A copy of the syllabus A copy of the Internship Contract A character contract The ministry skills checklist A copy of the Student Evaluation Form A copy of the Supervisor Evaluation Form The portfolio evaluation The internship journal sheet (15) The supervisor should receive: The supervisor information letter A copy of the syllabus A copy of the Internship Contract A character contract A copy of the ministry skills checklist A copy of the Student Evaluation Form Two copies of the Supervisor Evaluation Forms A copy of the portfolio evaluation (just for your information) A internship journal sheet (1) If you are starting your internship over the summer, you need to start your journal and keep track of your hours on the top of the journal page. Also, it is imperative that you give the supervisor letter to your supervisor as soon as possible so that you can both sign the contract. Please return the contract to me as soon as you have it filled out. (You and your supervisor should also keep a copy of the contract.) All of your materials should be put into a 3 ring binder and labeled Internship Portfolio. including a copy of the Internship Contract, a copy of the Ministry Skills Checklist, Samples of Teaching Outlines, and Ministry Planning Sheets, Journal Pages and your Character Contract. Also included in your portfolio would be any samples of brochures, letters or communication that you performed. If you have pictures that you can put in your portfolio, please do so. If you have any questions call ( x 5374) or me and I will get back to you. Keep in mind that over the summer I do not go into the office on a consistent basis and will not check my phone messages or messages as regularly as I do during the school year. I will return your messages as soon as I can do so. I will be praying for you during your internship experience.
