1 Job Description: Principal St. Paul the Apostle Catholic School 1536 Selby Avenue Los Angeles, California sp apostle.org St. Paul the Apostle Catholic Community was established in 1928 and has been staffed by the Paulist Fathers since its inception. The central mission of the Paulist Fathers is evangelization and its related ministries: Christian unity, reconciliation and interreligious dialogue. St Paul the Apostle School was established in 1935 under the guidance of the Daughters of Mary and Joseph who have staffed the school since its inception. Their mission is to be a compassionate, joyful presence that enables each person to recognize his/her value and dignity. SCOPE OF POSITION Catholic education is rooted in the conviction that Jesus Christ provides the most comprehensive and compelling example of the realization of full human potential. The Catholic school principal serves not only as the educational leader but also as the spiritual exemplar of the school. Emphasizing qualities of excellence, commitment, creativity, and innovation in all school endeavors, the principal guides a community committed to the development of the whole child. The principal works collaboratively with the pastor, who is the ex officio chief administrative officer of a parish school. The principal is responsible for establishing, demonstrating and promoting the highest standards and expectations for academic performance, behavior and spiritual growth of all students, as well as directing and nurturing all members of the school staff and the school parents, who are recognized as the primary educators of their own children. RESPONSIBILITIES Philosophy: A practicing Catholic who understands and is dedicated to the ministry of Catholic education; Actively fosters the Catholic identity of the school by promoting Catholic values and nurturing the faith formation and spirituality of faculty, staff and students in an environment compatible with the philosophy and spirit of the Paulist Fathers and the Daughters of Mary and Joseph
2 Organizational Leadership: Establishes an organizational structure through which working relationships, lines of accountability and responsibility, and communication channels are clearly defined; Implements and encourages collaborative planning and leadership at all levels of the school organization; Contributes to the building of positive morale among faculty, staff and students; Models integrity and promotes high ethical and professional standards in all interactions with the stakeholders in the school; Establishes a clear, strong and consistent policy for dealing with issues involving student discipline and interactions among teachers, administration and the parent body; Assures maintenance of complete, accurate, up-to-date personnel and pupil records according to Archdiocesan guidelines; Meets formally with the Pastor on school business at regular intervals; Serves on the parish pastoral staff and attends staff meetings and retreats. Faculty, Staff and the Instructional Program: Establishes clear policies and practices for recruitment and hiring of faculty and staff, as well as for professional accountability; Possesses a broad understanding of curriculum, instruction and student assessment procedures; Guides the development and implementation of the school curriculum; Provides orientation for new faculty; Encourages and enables faculty and staff to pursue professional development opportunities; Assures that all faculty and staff are enrolled in the Archdiocesan VPIN program; Actively supports the students and curriculum of the parish religious education program; Encourages effective teaching based on current educational research and improved student learning results; Approves the school calendar and scheduling of special events; Possesses a comprehensive understanding of the role of technology in education
3 Students: Oversees the recruitment and admission process for new students; Administers disciplinary and dismissal actions; Monitors student progress in the academic program as well as in cocurricular and extracurricular activities; Maintains a visible presence during the school day and at school related liturgies, events and activities; Supports an inclusion program that identifies and addresses special needs of students including health, physical, educational, emotional, behavioral, and/or spiritual concerns. Parents: Establishes accessible and open communication with parents (individual meetings, s, parent programs, conferences); Attends School Board meetings; Attends Parents Working for Children (PWC) meetings; Participates frequently in school sponsored parent activities; Promotes parent participation in Sunday liturgies at the parish and in parish activities; Encourages parent involvement in adult faith formation programs. Finance and Facilities: Works closely with the Pastor, Parish Finance Council, School Board and the PWC to ensure that the school is adequately funded for school operations including: salaries and benefits, student tuition assistance, ongoing and deferred maintenance, and staff and professional development; Complies with all procedures set forth for Catholic elementary schools in the Archdiocesan Administrative Handbook; Evaluates and endorses the proposed budget in advance of its submittal to the Pastor and the Parish Finance Council; Participates in the activities of the Development Office/Advance Coordinator; Ensures the school is safe, clean, well-maintained and attractive. Public Relations and External Constituencies: Actively promotes the image and reputation of St. Paul the Apostle School; Promotes parish social justice and outreach programs to Catholic and other - 3 -
4 non-profit agencies; Fosters cooperation and communication with local schools and agencies, especially Catholic schools, parishes and the community; Communicates as appropriate with Archdiocesan agencies, the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) and the California Department of Education. TRAITS AND CHARACTERISTICS The principal will be a practicing Catholic whose faith is visible and inspiring in daily life and work. He or she will be a collaborative leader with an accessible and approachable style that demonstrates a willingness to listen to new ideas while offering creative solutions and strong leadership to challenges. The successful candidate will be a coalition builder who creates an inclusive environment that is conducive to sincere and open communication. The principal must also demonstrate the following: Commitment to an ongoing understanding of the ministries and spirituality of the Paulist Fathers and the Daughters of Mary and Joseph as they continue to evolve; Excellent oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills; Knowledge and understanding of the financial, accounting, marketing and operational functions of an organization and the ability to apply this knowledge in decision making; Commitment to ongoing professional growth through reading, classes, workshops, conferences, etc.; Ability to articulate an educational vision that incorporates the best aspects of Catholic education; Experience with various leadership strategies when dealing with parents, boards and alumni. EDUCATION A master s degree or higher in Education or Education Administration is required. A minimum of ten years of elementary school teaching and/or administrative experience is also required. A significant amount of experience must have occurred in a Catholic school environment
