2 Y8 Parents Only Dear Parents/ Carers RE: Summer Term Of Mice and Men As I am sure you are aware, the New Curriculum for all years has become increasingly challenging and complex. To ensure that we fulfil the level of challenge, whilst also supporting the transition in to Year 9, we have worked with Wolgarston High School to plan the units we are delivering this term. The first unit will be a previous GCSE text called Of Mice and Men. The novella is set in 1930s America and does cover themes and issues of the time period, which, at times, are quite mature and will require the children to approach the text with a sensible attitude. In addition, on the odd occasion, the language is also in context to the time period. However, we endeavour to explain this very clearly to the children from the outset. As part of the unit there is the option to watch a PG rated film and we would like to have permission from parents/ carers before we watch this. Please write in your child s organiser if you DO NOT wish them to watch the film by the 2 nd May We thank you for your continued support and co-operation. 3 Year 8 Study Visit to France 11th 15th April 2016 Those of you who followed my blog on the school website during our week away will have seen that this year s visit to France was a resounding success. Sixtytwo excited Year 8 children and seven staff set off from school at 6.15am on Monday for the Château du Broutel in the Somme département of Northern France. On the return journey, we were unfortunately delayed in traffic, finally arriving back at school at on the Friday night, very tired but having had a wonderful week. The weather was not kind to the children for their camp fire on the first evening at the Château but on Tuesday we awoke to blue skies and it was much more settled after that. Glorious weather on Tuesday and Thursday meant that we were able to enjoy picnic lunches on the beach both in Berck and le Touquet. We were very fortunate that our visit coincided with the internationally renowned Berck Kite Festival, so the little seaside resort was alive with people, stalls, a merry-go-round and a fabulous display of kites. During the course of the week the children learnt a great deal about French culture in visits to a snail farm, chocolate factory and to the local towns and markets. Naturally, they had lots of opportunities to hear and practise speaking French in the shops and cafés. As their French teachers, Mrs Tyler and I were delighted that the children made a real effort to use their language skills. On Wednesday we spent the afternoon at the Château, enjoying some of the activities offered by the centre, including Archery, Abseiling and Fencing. The success of the visit was largely due to the exemplary conduct of the Year 8 children who accompanied us this year. Their behaviour, co-operation and manners throughout the whole visit were superb and were praised by the instructors at the Château. They were excellent ambassadors for Penkridge Middle School in particular, but also for British young people as a whole. During our visit to the World War I Cemetery in Étaples they were reflective and respectful and they were a credit to both their families and the school. Since our return I have thanked the children in school for their excellent conduct but would like to take this opportunity to do so again. I would also like to thank the six members of staff, who accompanied the children and me to France, for their invaluable support prior to, and during the visit. Without such

4 a brilliant team of staff around me, I would not be able to run the visit. The staff this year were Mrs Tyler, Mr Sutton, Miss Barnes, Mr Hodson, Mrs Watts and Mr. Watkins. The Year 8 children who went to France will soon be able to obtain copies of the photos taken during the visit. I will also be asking a few volunteers to present an account of the visit and tell Year 7 pupils all about their experiences of France in an assembly in the next few weeks. I look forward to organising another, equally successful, visit in 2017 for next year s Year 8 pupils. Mme. Wilson For all pupils Pupil Achievements Connor Heath successfully passed his 1 st Dan Black Belt Grading in Bristol on Saturday. He has been training for over 4 years for this and as a result has become is the 1 st ever white-to-black belt student from the Newport and Penkridge Tae Kwon Do Club. Well done Connor! Well done to Ella Williamson who came 1 st in her Tap solo, 2 nd in Lyrical solo, two 1 st places in Troupe dances and the best overall competitor in the Dance Competition.
