1 Intensive English Program ieng 002: Listening and Speaking Course Description The Intensive English Program is designed for students with limited experience of using English who need intensive instruction and practice in all aspects of the English language to help them to succeed in PSU s Preparatory Year Program. This course, ieng 002, aims to build the students skills in in listening, speaking, vocabulary and grammar. By the end of the course students should be able to: Listening listen for intonation and syllable stress listen for main ideas, content, details, and reasons predict content understand opinions and attitudes Speaking express: agreement, opinions, ideas, difficulties, problems ask follow-up questions describe personal experiences keep a conversation going give short presentations Grammar use the simple tenses in speech use the present continuous in speech use adjectives in speech use adverbs in speech use prepositions in speech ieng 002 Course Outline Page 1 of 5

2 Course Outline The 15-week semester is made up of 10 cycles. Please see the course calendar for more details. Punctuality All students are expected to arrive on time or early for class with the appropriate books, materials, and stationery supplies. If students arrive late to class seven minutes or less, they will be marked late on the attendance register. If students are late three times, they will be marked absent for one period. Students who arrive more than seven minutes late will be marked absent for one period. Students who arrive to class without the required books, stationery, or handouts will be marked M on the attendance register. Three M s will be converted into one absence. Attendance All students are expected to attend all classes. However, students are allowed to miss up to 17 periods or teaching hours. If students miss 18 periods or more they will receive a Denial Notice (DN) and will not be able to attend classes nor sit any more assessments. Students who miss class for legitimate reasons should keep documentation (valid medical certificates, police reports etc.) If they receive a DN, they should take to the documentation to Student Services.
