GreenLight award EDP s Sustainability Principles publicly assumed Sustainability and Environmental Office 5/19
EDP identified the potential direct and indirect biodiversity impacts of its activities 1 Thermal Generation Direct impacts: land covered; refrigerating circuits Indirect impacts:: S02 NOx and CO2 emissions 2 Hydro Generation Changes of the river natural regime and current fluctuations. Animal and vegetation adaptation to new river conditions Migrating fish barrier flooded area 3 4 Wind Generation Distribution Fauna: Birdlife; Bats; Iberic-wolf Flora Landscape Birdlife Flora inside protecting power lines control area Sustainability and Environmental Office 6/19
EDP s Biodiversity Policy was published in June 2007 EDP wants to have a more active role in biodiversity promotion and conservation Our Commitments: Integrate biodiversity impact assessment in all stages of our activities Minimize biodiversity impacts and when it it not feasible, implement alternative compensation measures Report our performance in a transparent, regular and externally verified incorporate Biodiversity Into approach management decisions Global positive impact Contribute to scientific knowledge in this issue strengthens dialogue and partnerships with stakeholders Sustainability and Environmental Office 7/19

EDP joined Business & Biodiversity initiative Under Business and Biodiversity EU initiative EDP agree with ICNB to assume the following voluntary commitments: Long-term initiatives: Study the impacts of climate change on biodiversity, with cost/benefits evaluation mid term act or no act strategies. Short term initiatives: identification of the main drivers for biodiversity degradation and the most effective recovering measures; Emergency recovery Plan of 3 cliff breeding birds in Parque Natural Douro Internacional: Black Stork; Egyptian Vulture and Bonelli s Eagle Plan the improvement of conservation status of migrating fish and their habitats between the mouth of River Cávado and Penide dam Sustainability and Environmental Office 9/19
EDP set up a Biodiversity Fund, totalizing 2,5 million euros for a 5 years period 1 What is it? Management instrument to finance projects associated with biodiversity promotion and conservation. It has to be used by independent organizations 2 How it works? Open application Selection criteria publicly available It can never be associated directly to EDP activities; 3 Who can apply for? 12 Collaboration agreement between EDP, ICNB, Quercus and SPEA for the compatibility among overhead power lines and birdlife ( ) Develop more studies and make compatible overhead high and medium voltage power lines with birdlife in Portugal 2nd Stage ( ): 37 km overhead power line to be protected until the end of 2008 protected power lines under vigilance : 110 km observed + 65 km of control power lines Main results revealed decreasing of 50% deaths by electrocutions Two new technologies for birdlife protection being tested Fotos: EDP Sustainability and Environmental Office 12/19
Collaboration agreement between ICNB and Local NGO to implement an Emergency Recovery Program for cliff breeding birds in International Douro s Nature Reserve ( ) Invert the loss rate of Bonelli s Eagle; Egyptian vulture and Black stork in Douro s Nature Reserve Specific goals: Improve habitat conditions for the birds provisions Increase the populations productivity Decrease the mortality drivers Fotos: A. Monteiro, Carlos Carrapato, João Cosme, Ana Berlinger, PNAD,PNDI Increase scientific knowledge Improve the image of this species among local communities Sustainability and Environmental Office 13/19

Collaboration agreement with Planeta Vivo for the recovery Plan of migrating fish communities in Douro basin ( ) Study the distribution and stock of migrating fish down Carrapatelo dam; Test captivity reproduction; test the efficiency of the fish transpose device; identify adequate habitats for nurseries 2 nd stage concluded: Eel and sea lamprey exist with stable populations Eel do not need special conservation schemes Captivity reproduction of the sea lamprey was obtained successfully and habitats adequate for nurseries identified in the river streams and shores Fotos: Planeta Vivo Fish transpose device with low efficiency. Detail studies are required Sustainability and Environmental Office 15/19
Partnership with Seia municipality for converting Desterro forest in Serra da Estrela in a nature reserve (2007) 136 ha were transferred for the establishment of a nature reserve Initially an agricultural area, it will be transformed in a specific vegetation spot contributing for the increasing of the local biodiversity. Local trees will grow in Setúbal power station greenhouses Fotos: C M Seia Fotos: EDP Sustainability and Environmental Office 16/19
Use of Setúbal power station greenhouses for growing autochthonous species ( ) Promote the plantation of 90 thousand trees grown in EDP greenhouses, under INETI scientific and technical supervision Greenhouses used to develop the germination of some rare tree species in Portugal Contributes to the reforestation of degraded areas and burned areas of the country Contributes for the reforestation of Nature reserves such as: Serra da Estrela; Serra da Arrábida; PNDI Fotos: EDP Sustainability and Environmental Office 17/19
Monitoring studies in our wind farms: birdlife; bats; wolf and local flora Identify best future practices, Improve scientific knowledge of some species.
