6 2 4 Parent- Child Drama OPEN TO CHILDREN AGES 3 5, PLUS A PARENT OR GRANDPARENT Children love using their imaginations to explore the world around them, and they love the special interaction that exists between parent or grandparent. Share the unique experiences and wonderful moments that can occur in creative drama by participating in a class with your favorite young person. First Steps GRADE PRE-K (AGES 3 5) 10 students plus one parent or grandparent per child Tuition: $160/session Our trained instructors will work with you, using creative drama to engage your child in this incredibly fun class. Children in this class will take steps toward focus, expression and working together. A small class size ensures a great experience for both adult and child! Creative Drama OPEN TO NEW AND RETURNING STUDENTS IN GRADES K4 4 Creative Drama builds fundamental theater skills while enhancing the development of life skills. Students imagine, enact and reflect upon improvised situations. Through this process they come to understand theater, themselves and the world in which they live. Photo by Mark Frohna Story Drama GRADES K4 K5 12 students per class Tuition: $160/session Step into your favorite stories as we use creative drama to bring them to life! Students are guided through dramatic activities that encourage self-expression, concentration, cooperation and discussion. This class emphasizes telling the story, creating dialogue, action and characters. Throughout the year, young people will explore different stories including Aesop s Fables, The Little Engine That Could and Miss Nelson is Missing! Each child will receive a ticket to the corresponding First Stage production. Creative Drama Adventures GRADES 1 2 Would you like to take an exciting adventure? You can when you set off on a new adventure each week. Imagination, concentration and teamwork will be the keys to success in this exciting class. Each child will receive a ticket to the corresponding First Stage production. Fall: Soar to New Heights Winter: Life as a Bug Spring: Go Undercover! Creative Drama Classics GRADES 2 3 Some of our greatest books have been written with young people in mind. Each semester we will choose a classic book or story to explore through drama. A great introduction to acting and classic literature. Each child will receive a ticket to the corresponding First Stage production. Fall: Peter Pan and Wendy Winter: U:Bug:Me Spring: Miss Nelson is Missing! Creative Drama Journeys GRADES 3-4 Are you ready for adventure? Each semester our team will research and bring to life exciting and exotic trips. Pack your bags, say your goodbyes and set a course for adventure. Each child will receive a ticket to the corresponding First Stage production. Fall: Neverland Winter: The Magic Bicycle Spring: Time Travel Creative Drama Scene Study GRADES 3-4 This is your chance to put it all together! Students will expand their voice, movement and improvisation skills while working on a scene. This exciting class allows third and fourth graders a chance to perform and hone their creative drama skills.

9 Core Classes GRADES 4 12 Core classes progress from beginning to advanced actor training for grades Small class sizes allow teachers to meet each student at his or her level of ability. As in any discipline from sports to music the training process is continuous. We encourage students to repeat core classes. Introduction to Acting Grades 4 6 at Milwaukee Youth arts center Grades 5 7 at Oconomowoc arts center Get into the act! Learn the basics of acting voice, movement, improvisation and character development. As students explore the craft of acting they are also developing communication, confidence and self-esteem. This class serves as the foundation for further Academy training and may be repeated. Core: Character FALL Grades 4 6, 7 12 Move beyond yourself while learning the tools for creating realistic, three-dimensional characters for the stage. Actors in this class study vocal, physical and emotional characterization. Core: Relationships WINTER Grades 4 6, 7 12 The heart of any great scene is an honest, engaging relationship. Students in this class work together to make positive choices and create realistic relationships on stage. Core: Monologue and Scene Work SPRING Grades 4 6, 7 12 Get out the scripts! Use your core acting skills to break down a monologue and make it audition ready. Students will also do in depth work with classmates on contemporary scenes. 10 GRADES 3 12 Electives reach beyond the core classes and venture into other exciting areas of theater arts! Try pairing an elective with a Core Class. Some electives may require specific prerequisites. Musical Theater Grades 3 4, 4 6, 7 12 Sharpen your singing voice and hone your hoofing while working on numbers from great musicals. Whether you are experienced or just beginning, this class will challenge and inspire you. Improv: Comedy Grades 4 6, 5 7, 7 12 Tuition: $160/session Fans of Whose Line is it Anyway? this is the class for you! Quick thinking, give take, and playing the action will be the key to success and a lot of laughs. This popular class fills up quickly, so don t delay. Organized Chaos: Beginnings Grades 7 12 NO AUDITION REQUIRED Tuition: $160/session This class introduces the concept of long-form improvisation. It s filled with advanced concepts, high-brow humor, and dissects the world of humor and what makes something funny. Auditioning (Fall and Spring sessions only) Grades 4 6, 7 12 Work with a professional actor to learn how to prepare and do your best work in an audition. An invaluable course for any actor. Swordplay (Fall session only) Grades 5 12 Train with certified actor combatants! Learn the tricks of sword fighting for the stage. Students in this class will focus on body control and awareness, technique, and above all, safety. This course is ongoing training for the beginner and the advanced. Shakespeare (Winter session only) Grades 7 12 Spend the semester studying the world s greatest playwright! Focuses on one of the Bard s great plays through the study of monologues and scenework under the direction of a professional Shakespearean actor. Get thee to class! Organized Chaos Our most popular program! Grades 7 12 BY AUDITION ONLY Tuition: $425 for entire year Multiple teams, working under the guidance of Improv teacher Patrick Schmitz, work on advanced improvisation, sketch comedy, short films and perform public shows throughout the school year. Students wishing to join must have completed previous Academy Improv Comedy or Summer classes. Tuition; $550 for entire year Time: Fall, Winter, Spring 10:00 am -12:15 pm The Academy will be auditioning and interviewing high school aged students to participate in our advanced pre-professional theatre training program led by Academy Director John Maclay, professional actor and director Todd Denning, and special guest artists. Young Company members may also perform in Young Company productions throughout the year. The Young Company season tentatively includes Julius Caesar, Little Women*, A Piece of My Heart* and more. Auditions will begin in August. Students who wish to audition must be in high school and must register by September 1, Space is limited, and deposits will be refunded to any students not accepted into the Young Company. The curriculum also focuses on selfconfidence, personal expression, disciplined effort and group cooperation. 15 Support First Stage Theater Academy Thanks to generous contributions, the Theater Academy was able to offer financial support to more than 400 students last season. Your continued generosity helps ensure that interested young people don t miss out on Academy opportunities due to financial constraints. To make a donation to the First Stage Theater Academy simply fill in an amount on the registration form or call the Development Department at (414) to request a donor envelope. Financial Assistance Financial Aid is available to any student; awards are need based. Contact Erin Petrus, Community Partnership Coordinator for all questions at (414) or epetrus@firststage.org If you plan to apply for financial aid, do NOT register online. Financial aid applicants must register by mail only. Internships Students in eighth grade and above can earn tuition credit by serving as interns for our School Year classes. Our interns play a vital role in the Academy, serving as aides for our teachers and as mentors for our students. Contact Laurie DeMoon at (414) or ldemoon@firststage.org for more information. Registration Procedure All registrations are processed on a first-come, first-served basis. Please register as early as possible to avoid disappointment. Due to the high volume of registrations we will not be able to register you over the phone. Any information omitted from the registration form will delay registration. In order to get to know your child better, please include a photograph of your student with his or her registration. This photo, which can be any wallet-sized or snapshot photo, will not be returned. Registration Confirmations Confirmations are sent for the class(es) for which you have registered. Please read your confirmation thoroughly when you receive it. Your confirmation will also list any remaining balance which is due one week prior to the first day of class. Wait Lists We do maintain and enforce enrollment limits to ensure the best possible Academy experience for each student. Wait lists are often established for classes that have reached the enrollment limit. Students on wait lists may be called for enrollment should a cancellation occur. While we cannot predict when or if a cancellation would occur, we encourage you to be added to our wait list. To ensure fairness, students are registered on a first-come, first-served basis. Any money received will be applied to registered classes only. Any money received for wait listed classes will be returned. Tuition Tuition includes all books and materials unless otherwise noted. One Academy T-shirt is given to NEW STUDENTS ONLY. A $35 minimum deposit for School Year Academy is REQUIRED with your registration for EACH class FOR WHICH YOU HAVE REGISTERED, if signing up for automatic payment method. The full balance is due one week prior to the first day of class. If the balance is not received by this date, we will not hold your placement in the class. Refund Policy There is a $15 administrative fee for all refunds for School Year Academy. No refunds or tuition credits are given after the first day of class. The deposit will be forfeited if a student cancels after the session has begun. Class Cancellations First Stage Theater Academy reserves the right to cancel any course if enrollment is insufficient. Any tuition paid will be refunded in full. Switching Classes: If families find that they have a scheduling conflict or other emergency circumstance and need to switch their course selection, they may contact the Academy office to request this change. Students will not be moved from their assigned group after the first day of class. Please be aware that switching class is contingent upon space availability in the desired class. Attendance/Make-up Policy: If your child is unable to attend a day(s) of class, we do not offer make-up classes. Please contact the Academy office if you know in advance that your child will be absent. If First Stage Theater Academy needs to cancel one or more days of a class due to circumstances beyond the Academy s control (e.g., severe weather, power outage, etc.), there will be no refunds or make-up classes. Sending Children Home: Please use good judgment about bringing your child to First Stage Theater Academy. If your child is sick or contagious, please keep them home. Parents of children who become ill during the day will be promptly notified and are expected to arrange to pick up their child immediately. First Stage Theater Academy also reserves the right to send children home due to inappropriate or disrespectful behavior. 13
