4 FEES AND MAINTENANCE FOR BA IN ACTING UK AND EU STUDENTS Fees for UK/EU students applying for the BA in Acting are set at 9,000 per year. If you are new to higher education, you can apply for a tuition fee loan from the Government and there is a range of possible support available. 5 BA ACTING COURSE ADMISSIONS POLICY AND PROCEDURE Please make sure you have read these notes prior to applying and retain for your reference - All eligible candidates who apply before the closing date will receive an audition - All candidates must be 18 by the start of the academic year for which they are auditioning AUDITION PROCEDURE - ACADEMIC YEAR PRELIMINARY AUDITION 2 RECALL AUDITION 3 SHORT WORKSHOP 4 WORKSHOP DAY 1 PRELIMINARY AUDITION These run between November and April. All auditionees are seen at preliminary auditions by two or three members of the audition panel. Each candidate performs TWO speeches for the panel and is interviewed. We may also ask you to perform the second SHAKESPEARE so please have this prepared. Each interview will cover the same ground. PLEASE READ THE NOTES ON CHOOSING YOUR SPEECHES ON PAGE 07. The panel will have been informed of any disclosed condition/impairment on a candidate s application form unless the candidate has asked for the disability to be kept confidential. A candidate should feel free to disclose impairment at any time during the audition process if they have not done so on their application form or during the briefing session. ASSESSMENT Candidates will be expected to: In performance: - Demonstrate an understanding of the character they are performing, the context within which that character is speaking and the world the writer has created. - Communicate the intentions of the character vocally and physically and make a connection either with the audience or the character to whom they are speaking. - Show an understanding of and commitment to the power of language and story. In interview: - Demonstrate a commitment to train as a professional actor. - Be able to describe an experience of performance, preferably before a live audience. - Give evidence of a capacity or experience of reading plays, watching live theatre or a critical understanding of acting, films or television drama. If candidates are put forward for RECALL AUDITION the panel may in some cases suggest that the candidate change one of their speeches. 2 RECALL AUDITION These run between December and May. They are chaired by either the Director of RADA, the Director of Actor Training, the Chair of the Audition Panel or another senior Director with up to three other members of the audition panel. Each candidate presents the same speeches as at preliminary audition (unless he/she has been recommended to prepare a new audition piece) and will also be interviewed. Each candidate will also be required sing a short prepared, unaccompanied song (no longer than two minutes). Each interview will cover the same ground. ASSESSMENT Assessment is as for the PRELIMINARY AUDITION, with the candidate additionally being required to demonstrate an understanding of melody, style and musicality in the unaccompanied song. Candidates who reached the WORKSHOP stage in the previous academic year s auditions may be taken directly to recall stage without having a preliminary audition. 05

6 BA ACTING COURSE ADMISSIONS POLICY AND PROCEDURE Please make sure you have read these notes prior to applying and retain for your reference In New York and Dublin candidates may be recalled to work further with the panel and may be asked to attend a workshop in London at a later date. All other candidates attending the regional auditions, in Manchester and Leicester, will be expected to travel to RADA if they are offered a recall. 3 SHORT WORKSHOP A three-hour workshop (sometimes in the evening) where students work on a variety of material, both text and improvisation based. The workshop is usually led by the Director of RADA, the Director of Actor Training and/or the Chair of the Audition Panel and/or another senior Director. ASSESSMENT Candidates will be expected to: - work easily and fluently with other actors. - engage appropriately and imaginatively with character and text. - listen and respond within character. - rise to the challenge of difficult or demanding tasks. 4 WORKSHOP DAY This is the final stage and the students for the next academic year are chosen from these groups. Candidates will undertake a day of classes, similar to that of a day on the timetable of first-term students. All the sessions will be observed by members of the audition panel. All candidates must prepare a new speech for the workshop day. The sessions will include: MOVEMENT An introductory session of games and exercises. The teacher will be noting the students use of body and spatial awareness. Students who have disclosed a physical or sensory impairment will be accommodated, and all students are invited to disclose temporary injuries. VOICE Students will take part in groups in voice exercises, ear tests and individual pieces of sight reading. Applicants who have disclosed sensory impairments or SpLD s will be appropriately accommodated. The teacher will be noting vocal flexibility, fluency of reading and vocal health. The student will not be rejected specifically because of their performance in any of these classes but if the voice teacher believes the voice is in a chronically poor condition, requiring medical intervention before training can be safe and beneficial, RADA may ask for a specialist report from a laryngologist before offering a place. This could result in a place being offered on the condition that the candidate take up vocal therapy prior to the beginning of the course. SCENE STUDY Students work with a director in small groups on a scene from a play. The director will be looking for the ability to understand character and situation, to respond to direction and the capacity to work with other actors. IMPROVISATION A group session in which the teacher will be looking for the ability to respond in the moment without commenting, flexibility of mind and body, group awareness and the ability to respond genuinely to unknown challenges. SPEECHES Each candidate will work with a director on their new speech, to realise fully the material and opportunities within it. The director will be looking for an imaginative response to the text and character, physical and vocal adaptability, the ability to take direction. The whole group then performs these speeches in front of each other and members of the panel. As well as the above the panel will be looking for candidates ability to: - Commit to the working life of a group for the duration of the workshop. - Respond to professional teaching and develop physical, vocal, imaginative and interactive skills in support of other members of the group. - Choose and work on appropriate audition speeches, responding to, and building on, professional direction. It is the intention of the Director of RADA and the panel to conduct the day in a relaxed manner so that, whatever the outcome, the students will have had an enriching experience. 06

7 BA ACTING COURSE ADMISSIONS POLICY AND PROCEDURE Please make sure you have read these notes prior to applying and retain for your reference FURTHER PROCESS After audition a candidate will be sent a letter - Or inviting them to a RECALL AUDITION After a recall audition a candidate will be sent a letter - Or inviting them to a SHORT WORKSHOP - Or asking them to wait whilst other candidates are auditioned After a short workshop a candidate will be sent a letter - Or inviting them to a WORKSHOP DAY - Or asking them to wait whilst other candidates are auditioned After a workshop day a candidate will be sent a letter - Or asking them to wait whilst other candidates are auditioned - A successful candidate will be telephoned with the offer of a place; this will be followed by a letter, which will include the obligations placed on a student on acceptance of a place. The Academy will require a letter of acceptance. As indicated, there may be considerable waiting time during this process. A candidate who is on hold may accept a place at another drama school and hand that place back at any time, up to 01 July. A candidate may not hold more than one place at any one time. CHOOSING YOUR SPEECHES You need to prepare THREE speeches of NO LONGER THAN THREE MINUTES EACH: - TWO speeches by SHAKESPEARE (or another Elizabethan/Jacobean playwright) - ONE speech from a CONTEMPORARY play, ie a play written in the last 50 years We will ask to you to perform one SHAKESPEARE and the CONTEMPORARY speech. We may also ask you to perform the second SHAKESPEARE so please have this prepared. DO - Choose at least one speech from a character close to your age - Choose contrasting pieces: dramatic/comic, serious/light, active/reflective - Imagine the person you are speaking to - Be familiar with the rest of the play and the context in which the speech appears - Choose a speech about which you are excited as a performer and can imagine playing one day DON T - Mimic the performance of someone else you ve seen act the speech: we want actors not impersonators - Assemble a speech from lines of dialogue where another character s interjections are an important part of the scene - Choose speeches by characters who are mad or wildly out of control: these are very difficult - Use an accent in which you re not confident - Worry about how original your choice of speech is - Do NOT contact the Academy to discuss whether you feel your choice of speeches is suitable RECALL AUDITION You need to prepare a short unaccompanied song. This needs to be no longer than two minutes; a verse and chorus is usually adequate. WORKSHOP DAY You need to prepare a speech which you have not previously presented at a RADA audition. This should be no longer than THREE MINUTES. It can be by any author. 07
