2 I. Mission Overview -In our experiment we are going to measure the differences in Earth s magnetosphere and see if it is strongest in the atmosphere or in space. We also want to see if the strength of the magnetosphere changes as we go up, 75 miles high. Also, we can tell that magnetism is in our magnetosphere. - Hypothesis 1. As we go into space (62 miles up), we will first encounter different measurements of magnetic strength. These measurements would be different than while the rocket is in the atmosphere. 2. As we go up, the magnetic measurements will be stronger, because the different layers of the magnetosphere are stronger than the magnet fields within our atmosphere. 3. As we go up, the strength shall be lower, since we are farther from our core, which makes our magnetic field and magnetosphere. - Using a gauss meter we expect to discover how strong parts of the magnetosphere is. We also plan to prove that the atmosphere has different strengths in Earth s magnetosphere then in space. We also plan to discover whether or not that the strength of the magnetosphere gets stronger as we go up out of the atmosphere and deep in to space. - For this experiment we will launch a gauss meter, a 9v battery and a data logger. Before the launch, the gauss meter will be turned on and will be ready to measure the strength of earth s magnetic field. We can set the start and stop times on the data logger. This will need to be synchronized with the launch time. The data will be stored in the data logger. We will need the telemetry data from the rocket (altitude and time of flight) so that we can plot our data accurately. When the rocket lands we will take the data on the rocket and then match the times together with the result of that we will see the time distance and the strength of the magnetism. With the data we can determine that if the measurements of the magnetosphere are different and if they are where the strength is greater. -The experiment we have done in the past is when me and my partner did a microgravity experiment, and we used magnets we put on the side, and put a magnet inside, and we wanted to see if the two magnets stop the EXPERIMENT_DESERTRIDGEMS_JIMPACINI 2 of 6
3 magnet inside from falling with its magnetism. It worked when we dropped it, the magnetism did stop the magnet. Along with that, NOAA has studied the space weather (How it effects the magnetosphere) and have studied the magnetosphere by launching weather balloons to measure and study the magnetosphere. -The experiment requires a gauss meter, nine volt batteries, and a data logger. We also need one half of the 9.5 diameter plate. Our experiment is less than 1.5 pounds in weight and less than 1.5 tall. II. III. Experiment Description - Our experiment will see if differences in the magnetosphere can be measured. - The purpose of this experiment is to measure the magnetosphere. - The data is stored in a data logger/ voltmeter - To get the data from the gauss meter to the voltmeter, start with a nine volt battery. The nine volt battery goes into the voltage regulator. The voltage regulator turns the nine volt battery into a five volt battery. Then the data goes out to the data logger/ voltmeter, and then it gives us a reading and the voltmeter/ data logger records once every second. Subsystem Requirements Subsystem -data logger -battery -gauss meter Data logger- keeps data on the voltage produced by the gauss meter Battery- power gauss meter Gauss meter- measures the magnetosphere EXPERIMENT_DESERTRIDGEMS_JIMPACINI 3 of 6
4 IV. Experiment layout Data Logger Gauss Meter Battery (9v) V. Test Plans - We drop gauss meter, data logger, and battery from the drop tower - We attach the data logger to the gauss meter and swing high and low magnets over the gauss meter to see if the data logger records and the gauss meter measures a magnetic pull - If the data logger doesn t work of breaks during testing then we use a backup - If the gauss meter doesn t work then we have a backup and a testing gauss meter and a backup -We use a pendulum with a magnet taped to it to swing over a gauss meter to see if it can measure brief magnetic waves. - We will use a drop tower to drop the 3 gauss meter, with the data logger and the battery all together. -We will test the strength of the wooden screw with a rubber tip, a plastic screw. EXPERIMENT_DESERTRIDGEMS_JIMPACINI 4 of 6
5 - We will make sure all components fit on the plate with height of mounting hardware and measure weight. -We will make sure that all components can run for at least 40 minutes. -Test everything wired together to see if it works. - See which gauss meter can do all of the steps better. - Put a row of strong and weak magnets and move the gauss meter over all of the magnets to see if it can measure all of the magnets individually. -See if the wires can stay together under 19 Gs. We had our good, we had the bad, and we had the ugly. For the most part it was great, though we did have some concerns. Though I think we can all agree that this was the best summer ever. This is something we all want to do again! So, for the most part this camp was good. Learning about space was just to cool. We got to learn about planets and the galaxies! We did a lot of amazing experiments like dropping an egg off a balcony and seeing if we could make it survive or if the egg breaks. Though, sometimes we had some bad experiences. One of the bad things was that it was hard to find measurements. We also had a limited amount of time to do these experiments. We wish we had more time, but we learned to live with what we had. At time there was a lot of frustration. We screamed and yelled and freaked out. Though, we soon got over it. So there is the good, the bad, and now the ugly. It took us about a week to get used to this whole idea and we fought a bit to understand. Nothing could be worse than understanding what was going on a week into the camp, but, we got used to the idea, we were ready to take off. Another ugly thing was the time. We screamed at others to hurry up when they were being a little slow. We fought and we debated on what we should do in the designs. Oh and boy did it get way too ugly. We learned so much in this crazy process. We had tons of fun too. This was just so amazing! We got through the hardships and saw how much fun this camp really was. We now see what engineering is like, and now love what this camp has offered to our education. This was a fantastic camp that teaches us middle schoolers how great science really is. Thank you so much for opening doors for us. This opportunity was like none other. Thanks so much for giving us this opportunity. EXPERIMENT_DESERTRIDGEMS_JIMPACINI 6 of 6
