1 Salem Community College Course Syllabus Section I Course Title: Digital Illustration Course Code: CGA 132 Lecture Hours: 2 Laboratory Hours: 2 Credits: 3 Course Description: Using techniques for creating vector art, design, and illustration, this course will introduce students to the vector art application, Adobe Illustrator, and will cover lessons including basic shapes, stroke, fill, gradients, pen tool, brushes, transforms, type, and layers. To this end the student will become proficient in the use of this industry leading application and will be able to create original art. Equal emphasis will be placed on the development of professional work practices, creative problem solving techniques and critical thinking skills. Competency will reflect a mastery and control of the technologies and an ability to apply learned skills to creative projects. Via assigned projects, students will create portfolio quality art that can be shown on a job interview. Prerequisite: Completion of ENG 98, if required, and CGA 101 or written permission of instructor Co-requisite: None Place in College Curriculum: This course is required for the Associate in Fine Arts in Computer Graphic Art and the Associate in Science in Game Design and Development. 3 CGA132 Digital Illustration page 3 Section III Course Objectives Course Performance Objective #1: Students will demonstrate a practical knowledge of Adobe Illustrator tools and techniques. 1. Run the Adobe Illustrator program. 2. Create and save a new file. 3. Use the rectangle tool and basic shape tools to create shapes. 4. Use the selection tool to move and resize shapes. 5. Use the control bar for stroke and fill. 6. Use the swatches palette including color libraries (pantone and additional pre-determined libraries). 7. Use the layers palette to move objects and reorganize elements on the page from front to back. 8. Combine simple shapes to create complex designs. 9. Use the direct selection tool to manipulate both standard and custom shapes. 10. Work with the pen tool to create and manipulate points, and create closed paths/custom shapes. 11. Use photographic reference to trace. 12. Use the type tool and character palette to work with type. 13. Apply his/her knowledge of tools and palettes to create his/her final design assignments. 14. Differentiate the properties of print and web graphics Course Performance Objective #2: Students will analyze, recognize and identify professional works of illustration as shown by the instructor 1. Analyze successful works of art created with Adobe Illustrator. 2. Recognize how professional illustrators use shape. 3. Identify how professional illustrators use color. 4. Identify how professional illustrators work with balance. 5. Identify creative use of typography in professional examples. 6. Recognize how professional illustrators use contrast. 7. Compare and contrast different styles of digital illustration. 8. Identify at least three professional commercial artists with an emphasis in illustration. 9. Deduce digital illustration technique through the comparison of professional examples. 10. Develop an aesthetic preference by comparing different illustration styles. Course Performance Objective #3: Students will combine conceptual thinking with technical illustration abilities. 1. Evaluate and apply colors appropriate for a target audience.

Evaluate and apply shape, texture, pattern and effects within any given design. Course Performance Objective #4: Students will understand best practices for storytelling, and visual abbreviation of form. 1. Design small storyboards in a sketchbook. 2. Plan and devise a sequence of illustrations. 3. Construct a consistent visual sequence. 4. Design typography and imagery to communicate information. Course Performance Objective #5: Students will increase verbal skills and the ability to critically discuss and analyze digital illustration. 1. Describe illustrative works of their peers. 2. Compare illustrative works and techniques within the classroom. 3. Explain the creative process within their unique designs. 4. Put into their own words the process of creating illustrations, both technically and creatively. Course Performance Objective #6: Students will use both standard and stylized typography to communicate. 1. Evaluate and apply standard typefaces 2. Evaluate and apply custom typography 3. Plan and devise a typographic approach for each project. Course Performance Objective #7: Students will distinguish specific file types appropriate for multiple output devices. 1. Prepare professional level illustrations for print, web and mobile. 2. Evaluate the nature and purpose of vector artwork.
5 CGA132 Digital Illustration page 5 Section IV General Education Requirements: The general education goals covered in Digital Illustration are critical thinking & problem solving, communication, quantitative skills, aesthetic perspective and information literacy. See student handbook for additional details. Section V General Outcomes Assessment: A college-wide outcomes assessment program has been put into place to enhance the quality and effectiveness of the curriculum and programs at Salem Community College. As part of this assessment program, the learning outcomes for this course will be assessed. Assessment methods may include tests, quizzes, papers, reports, projects and other instruments. Copies of all outcomes assessments are available in an electronic assessment bank maintained by the Institutional Research and Planning Office. Section VI Course Activities: Learning activities include reading and completing class assignments and tutorials, participating in lectures, internet research and, create and critique of selected works created with Illustrator, and maintaining a class notebook and completing final projects for presentation. Academic Honesty Policy: Students found to have committed an act of academic dishonesty may be subject to failure in this course, academic probation, and/or suspension from the college. Students absent from class for any reason are responsible for making up any missed work.
