1 Salem Community College Course Syllabus Course Title: Human Growth & Development Course Code: PSY 111 Lecture Hours: 3 Laboratory Hours: 0 Credits: 3 Course Description: This course is an overview of the major developmental stages from birth to old age. Emphasis is placed on the biological, sociological and psychological aspects of growth and development. Major topics include personality development, physiology of behavior, childrearing, death and dying. Place in College Curriculum: This course serves as a requirement for several liberal arts and nursing majors and an elective for others as dictated by specific program announcements. Pre-Requisite: None Co-Requisite: None

3 Human Growth & Development / Page 3 Course Performance Objectives #1: At the completion of this course, the student will be able to describe the beginning process of life from conception to birth. 1. Explain three research methods including their limitations. 2. Explain two ethnic problems in social research. 3. Explain the differences between the following theories: Learning, Cognitive, Psychoanalytical and Humanistic. 4. Explain the difference between a gene and a chromosome. 5. Explain the Genetic Abnormalities. 6. Define Gender-Rule Identity. 7. Explain the process of conception. 8. Explain the different family styles i.e. nuclear, extended, step and blended. 9. Explain the sequence of childbirth. 10. Objectives1-9 will be measured by short answers and/or multiple choice exams. Course Performance Objective #2 At the completion of this course the student will be able to describe three major developmental changes that pre-school children undergo. 1. List four competencies of a neonate. 2. List four competencies each for a 12 and 24 month old. 3. Explain infant attachment and bonding. 4. Explain separation anxiety. 5. Explain three pros and cons to day care. 6. Objectives 1-5 will be measured by short answer or multiple choice exams Course Performance Objective #3 Describe four significant achievements children must accomplish to be successful in school. 1. Explain two theories of language acquisition. 2. Describe five types of play. 3. Compare physical and motor skills of a two year old to a five year old. 4. Describe the different types of self. 5. Define aggression. 6. Explain the pros and cons of television. 7. Explain three learning disabilities. 8. Objectives 1-7 will be measured by short answer and multiple choice exams

List three physical and cognitive changes during Young Adulthood. 2. Explain the effects of divorce on a family. 3. Define Empty Nest. 4. Describe how the work force is changing. 5. Explain the phrase middle age, primetime or the beginning of the end? 6. Explain four physical and personality changes of middle age. 7. Course Performance Objective #7 Describe the impact of death on survivors. 1. Describe the grieving process. 2. Explain The search for a humane death. 3. Objectives 1 & 2 will be measured by short answer and multiple choice questions.

5 Human Growth & Development / Page 5 Course Activities: Verbal lecture presentations combined with class discussions student presentations, videos and other activities are important elements of the class. Course Requirements and Means of Evaluation: Please refer to the instructor s syllabus addendum (to be distributed in class) for specific information regarding the course requirements and means of evaluation. Attendance Policy: Regular and prompt attendance in all classes is expected of students. Students absent from class for any reason are responsible for making up any missed work. Faculty members establish an attendance policy for each course and it is the student s responsibility to honor and comply with that policy.
