Deltas are created from soil that has been carried downstream by the river. elevation - The altitude, or height, of land above sea level. estuary - An environment where salt and fresh water flow together that is loaded with the food materials eaten by shellfish. The Chesapeake Bay is the largest estuary system in the United States. Fort Caroline - An outpost in Florida founded by French Protestants in the year 1564, which was then destroyed a year later by Spanish Catholics. Fort Moultrie - The site of a famous Revolutionary War battle and the place where the Civil War began in It is just across the water from Charleston, South Carolina. Fort Sumter - The Union outpost in Charleston's harbor that was shelled by the rebel troops at Fort Moultrie. geography - The study of the Earth. Gulf of Mexico - The large body of water that lies to the west of the Florida peninsula. Jamestown - England's first successful colonial settlement founded along the banks of the James River in Virginia in lowland - An area of land that is lower than a nearby area. mainland - The principle land mass of a continent or any large area of land near a body of water. map - A flat representation of Earth or of a certain place on the Earth. There a many different types of maps. For example, a road map shows roads, cities, towns, and places of interest. A political map can show the borders between countries and states. A physical map can show such things as mountains, rivers, oceans, deserts, swamps, while a population map shows how many people live in certain areas. Mardi Gras - A French term meaning "Fat Tuesday." Mardi Gras is the last day before the Catholic period of fasting called Lent. Mardi Gras is celebrated in New Orleans and throughout the south with feasts, parties, parades, and masquerade balls. Mississippi River - The longest river in the United States. Spanish moss - A plant that lives on trees in the southeast which hangs down from their branches in long strands. Native Americans - The people who lived in North and South America before Europeans arrived. oil-drilling platform - A huge construction made from metal used for drilling the oil located deep below the sea floor. Workers often live on oil-drilling platforms. Outer Banks - The sandy barrier islands off the mainland of North Carolina. palmetto trees - Small palm trees with fanned-shaped leaves commonly found in the southeast. The palmetto has been adopted as the "state tree of South Carolina." Pamlico Sound - A large estuary area in North Carolina fed mostly by the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers. peninsula - An elongated piece of land that extends into a body of water. plantation - A large farm.
