Why Should You Attend? Topics chosen for this program are designed to provide updates on the identification, treatment, management and prevention of cardiovascular disease and concomitant conditions. The program agenda focuses on lipid disorders, atrial fibrillation, sudden cardiac death, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, catheter based and surgical therapies for aortic valve replacement, diabetes and hypertension. We will also highlight results of recent clinical trials and soon-to-be-released updates to clinical guidelines to manage patients with lipid disorders, diabetes, hypertension and atrial fibrillation. Goals and Objectives After attending CVI s 18th Annual Clinical Management of Heart Disease Cardiology Update 2011, attendees will be better able to: Recognize the role of inflammation in several stages of atherogenesis, from early plaque formation to late rupture Review recent clinical trial evidence indicating that statin therapy is both lipid lowering and anti-inflammatory, and that inflammatory biomarkers such as hscrp can be used to identify high-risk individuals who benefit from statin therapy Summarize results of recent lipid trials including JUPITER, ACCORD, AIM-HIGH and discuss the implications for clinical practice Consider clinical implications of the new NHLBI ATP-IV and Integrated Cardiovascular Risk Reduction Guidelines Develop strategies for risk stratification and prevention of sudden cardiac death on patients with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy Discuss appropriate use, cost and ethical considerations of ECG screening for sudden death risk in student athletes Describe the various aspects of pharmacologic, device, and ablation therapies in the treatment of atrial fibrillation Discuss safety, efficacy, and appropriate use of newly approved anticoagulant and antiplatelet agents Diagnose and consider therapeutic options for patients with aortic valve disease Discuss the findings of the PARTNER trial Compare and contrast surgical and catheter based therapies for aortic valve Discuss the new ADA guidelines for the screening and diagnosis of diabetes Individualize A1C goals for diabetic patients based on duration of diabetes, underlying heart disease and age Consider clinical implications of the new Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure (JNC8) Guidelines Review current concepts in the treatment of hypertension including non-pharmacologic therapies Initiate combination therapy for hypertensive patients Accreditation Statements This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and Policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of Drexel University College of Medicine and the Cardiovascular Institute of Philadelphia (CVI).
