1 Project 4: Casework/Reception desk Description: Conceptualize and design a reception desk. The concept will be driven by the functional and branding requirements specified by the client (see accompanying handout Design Brief ). The design of the desk will reflect an understanding of casework construction and 32mm hardware systems. The desk must be ADA compliant and address issues such as sight lines, customer relations, storage, computers/electronics, lighting, etc.

2 Each corporate interior office design must start with one focal point: the reception area. This one room is a client s first impression of the company as a whole and must reflect a welcoming and positive image. Images:

3 The reception desk is the center of activity in the office. This desk is one piece of furniture that can tell clients if the office is either organized and efficient or chaotic and incompetent.

4 In order to be productive at his or her job, the receptionist must have a desk that is functional and task-appropriate.

5 Phase One: The Concept In a minimum of fifty words, write a short essay on your understanding of the design brief. Consider the Mission Statement, Vision Statement and Programming. This must be written in complete sentences, grammatically correct, and be descriptive of how a client/consumer should feel when they walk into the reception area. For the sake of argument, consider that the reception area will be designed to correspond with your desk design.

6 Design Brief The Client: Media Arts Mission Statement: Media Arts promotes access to film and video as tools for community self-expression and social change and supports the professional development of media artists. 7 Programs: Annual Film Festival: For sixteen years, this festival celebrates films and videos by Latinos and/or about the Latino experience. Each year approximately 100 film and video makers visit the festival, 18,000 locals attend and over 130 works are screened from across Latin America and throughout the United States. 10 Distill the Essay Look for key elements: descriptive words, feelings, imagery, and sensations and write down some keywords. These words may not appear in the essay, some may come to mind after reading the essay. Just list these words on a sheet of paper.

11 Research Imagery Research shapes, colors, objects, etc. Find things that go with your concept for the client s organization based on your essay. The desk you are designing must address the client s vision of their organization.

12 Concept Sketches These will be loose sketches. Though scale should be a concern, the loose sketches are meant for you to generate many ideas without the burden of being exact. As you are sketching think about material and color. Sketch in elevation or perspective views.
