The process The ultiate drying dru Products have been dried industrially for ore than a century.since its early years, ANDRITZ Gouda has specialized in industrial processing lines. contents The process 02 Equipent 04 Visual ipressions 06 Various designs 09 Research and developent 14 Applications 17 ANDRITZ Gouda pilot plant 21 Visual ipressions 22 Worldwide service 24/7 24 Diensions and odels 26 Dru dried product fil For easy, hygienic drying of everything fro baby/infant food to toxic aterials, ANDRITZ Gouda is with you every step of the process. Product treatent before and after drying receives our equal attention. Fro kitchen preparation through to ill sifting and pneuatic transport, we can offer practical solutions as well as access to a wealth of infored research. Dru drying is a continuous indirect drying ethod. Products are dried by spreading the in a thin and unifor layer onto the heated surface. Due to the kneading effect of the applicator syste and to the scraped heat exchange surface, the dryer is unique for the drying of viscous, pasty, and sticky aterials. Due to the short retention tie of the product at high teperature, virtually no heat daage will occur. Contrary to Benefits Highest hygienic standard Low energy consuption High theral efficiency A long, continuous life cycle the direct drying ethod, which uses hot air for evaporation, the dru dryer does not need any dust separation. The theral efficiency is favorable, whilst no heat is wasted in the largest volues of exhaust air. A very thin layer of the product to be dried is applied to the outside of a rotating cylinder (dru). This dru is heated on the inside by eans of stea. When in contact with the heated surface, the liquid will evaporate fro the thin layer very quickly. After an alost coplete rotation of the dru, the reaining dried product is scraped off the 02
Cereal based baby/infant food dru surface in the for of a fil or as a powder. A special coposition of cast iron gives the dru a cobination of favorable properties: very accurate shape retention even at high stea pressure and teperature, and excellent scraping properties for the scraping knife. Stea heating gives unifor teperature distribution over the dru surface, and this results in a consistent product quality. The stea condenses on the inside of the drying dru. The condensate is reoved continuously fro the dru to ake the largest possible surface area available on the inside of the dru for condensation of the stea. The stea syste is a closed syste, which eans that the product cannot coe into contact with the stea or condensate. Dru drying is an environentally friendly drying ethod. There is hardly any dust eission, as only a relatively sall aount of air is reoved by suction. The axiu specified dust eission values can be obtained without coplicated filter installations. Energy recovery and sell abateent are possible. The copact dru dryer leaves an interestingly sall financial footprint. A relatively low investent in building and installation is required copared to other drying technologies. Drying can be an expensive part of the production process. With the ANDRITZ Gouda dru dryer, however, running costs can be significantly lower. Its high theral efficiency translates to stea consuption of approx. 1.4 kg for each kilogra of water evaporated. Useful energy can even be recovered as it exits the syste. 03
Equipent The keys to the syste The pure geoetry of the dru creates the perfect heat exchange surface. Indeed the concepts of strength and siplicity are incorporated throughout the ANDRITZ Gouda design. And while cleaning industrial equipent ight never be a joy, care in construction akes the necessary tasks as painless as possible. The ultiate drying dru Designing a pressure vessel to satisfy stringent production, quality, and safety paraeters is not a role for the faint-hearted. In ANDRITZ Gouda s experience, only cast iron of a special coposition can ensure high quality dru drying. Its unifor hardness and hoogenous structure equip the dru to withstand high teperatures and inner pressure with unflinching accuracy, whatever the prevailing operating conditions. Also, chroiu plating of the cast iron dru can be supplied for hygienic requireents or corrosive protection of the dru for certain applications. ANDRITZ Gouda dru cylinders are not just built for strength. They are achined both inside and out for soothest action. A highly accurate curve and wall thickness ensure exceptionally consistent heat transfer. An adaptable feed Regular product distribution is the first essential within a controlled drying process. ANDRITZ Gouda can supply a wide range of fixed or transferring feed systes to suit particular product and viscosity types. Drive ANDRITZ Gouda supplies a variable speed drive as part of the process control syste. This drive can be provided with an explosion-proof otor and is built up furtherore using tested standard coponents fro reputable anufacturers. The choice can be ade in consultation with the custoer. Recovery that s pure and siple The cast iron construction of the dryer s scraper assebly guarantees unifor pressure over the full length of the dru, and further serves to eliinate vibration. Knife pressure can be controlled hydraulically. Dried product is recovered as fil or powder into a special screw conveyor, coplete with pre-flaking capability, enabling the output to be transported easily. A special adaptation of the recovery syste is available for handling theroplastic products. 04

Various designs Different operating principles Precision-engineered for ultiate stability, ANDRITZ Gouda dryers are equipped for a long, uninterrupted life-cycle. Product on a dru dryer Building a reputation for quality eans using highly specified aterials and coponents. Special, copletely closed alloy castings for optial heat transfer, vapor hood tracing, special bearings, are all standard. ANDRITZ Gouda s quality assurance includes certification by ASME, TÜV, European PED, and CE. Depending on the design, the product is applied continuously as a thin fil at the botto or on top of the ain dru. As the dru rotates and is heated on the inside, the product dries on the outside of the dru surface. The brief exposure to a high teperature reduces the risk of daage to the product. The construction of the knife holder guarantees even pressure over the entire length of the dru. The use of specific aterials prevents vibrations as a result of scraping and guarantees unifor product reoval. The pressure of the knife can be controlled siply and outside of the process area. Soya flakes 09
Various designs The single dru dryer On the single dru dryer, the wet product is fed to the dryer by eans of applicator rolls Depending on the nuber of applicator rolls used, the layer fored on the drying dru can be thicker or thinner. The special construction of this dryer akes it particularly suitable for processing pasty or pulpy products. This is due to the applicator syste, which ensures perfect distribution of the product along the full length of the dru. In addition, the kneading effect of the rolls, prevent sticky products fro foring lups. Dru dryer with applicator rolls The applicator rolls ake it easy to regulate product feed. In addition, they have a kneading effect, preventing lup foration in stickier aterials. With perfect distribution along the length of the dru, the syste is ideal for processing pasty or pulpy products. Dru dryer with botto dip roll A version designed for specific applications and cheicals. In this achine, the roll sits underneath and dips into the product, picking up a liquid layer for transfer to the dru siilar to a printing press. 10
The double dru dryer A double dru dryer provides additional capability A double dru dryer is often used for products with lower viscosities. The product is fed into the sup between the two drus. The distance between the drus can be adjusted accurately to control the layer thickness on the drus. In addition, applicator rolls can be used. This achine can also be used as two single dru dryers with overhead applicator rolls. Double dru dryer With this syste, product is fed into the nip between a pair of drus (which always rotate in opposite directions). This sall gap between the drus is finely adjustable to optiize the fil thickness. Double dru dryer with applicator rolls The double dru dryer with applicator rolls is suitable for custoers with ore variables in their product range. This ultifunctional setup offers the greatest versatility cobining the advantages of both the single and double dru dryer systes 11
Various designs The vacuu dru dryer Heat sensitive? Cool-running vacuu dru dryers and double dru dryers. Enables drying at low teperatures, thus avoiding daage to heat-sensitive product coponents. freedo fro atospheric containation and independence fro cliatic conditions, operating results are always unifor. Moreover, these dryers can be used for recovery of solvents by collecting the vapors foring during the drying process. Double vacuu dryers offer larger capacity and, lower production costs. Two stea-heated drus revolve in a heretically sealed casing under strong vacuu. Liquid is fed in between the rolls, dried, and scraped off before the drus have copleted a single rotation. Food products ay benefit especially Swift evaporation without risk of oxidation Enzyes and vitains are preserved Coagulation of proteins is prevented Highly soluble end product The vacuu dryers are very hygienic. There is no recirculation of aterial, no waste is produced, and the dru is accessible for thorough cleaning. Since operation is totally independent of cliatic conditions, results are always the sae. 14 Research and developent Realizing the future vision Research and developent has been the cornerstone of ANDRITZ Gouda s success. The R&D activities are carried out in close co-operation with clients and focus on the feasibility of a desired process or product. ANDRITZ Gouda is ipleenting future standards, today. Making better, cleaner, ore coplete dryers, with stainless steel parts ade of the best grade. Designing systes with inial energy exhaust and dust eission (no coplicated filter installations required). And, of course, ensuring optial hygiene throughout the process achines that operate to HACCP/EHEDGE standards. Energy-efficient, environentally friendly With the ANDRITZ Gouda dru dryer, running costs can be significantly lower than with other dryers. Its high theral efficiency translates to stea consuption of approxiately 1.4 kg for each kilogra of water evaporated. Useful energy can even be recovered as it exits the syste. Dru drying is environental friendly as well; there is hardly any dust eission, thus avoiding coplicated filter installations and additional waste. Hygiene Hygiene is especially iportant in food applications. In the design of the dru dryer, a clear distinction is ade between the process section of the dryer and the echanical parts. This, for instance, prevents the risk of containation by lubricants (or containation of the lubricants due to leakage of the product). It also iproves the accessibility of parts for adjustent, inspection and aintenance. Innovation areas of the dru dryer are: Increasingly hygienic design Machine safety Maintenance aspects Product quality Energy savings/recovery Operator independence INTERFACE TO THE OUTSIDE WORLD INSECTS CLIMATE ANIMALS PROCESS HUMANS ENERGY PROCESS AREA BUILDING INGREDIENTS The dryer s process area is separated fro its echanical coponents, thus eliinating the risk of containation. 14

Applications Food industry ANDRITZ Gouda is ipleenting future standards today, ensuring optial hygiene throughout the process. Specialized dru dryers for products based on ilk, starch or cereals The use of ANDRITZ Gouda dryers is not liited to the ere evaporation of water or solvents fro a given product. In the case of certain nutritious substances for instance, there is also a ready-cooking effect in addition to drying and at which rearkable instant properties are obtained. Various world-faous instant foods are therefore ade on ANDRITZ Gouda dryers. Food products ay benefit especially fro the vacuu dru dryer, which enables drying at low teperatures, avoiding daage to heat-sensitive product coponents. Evaporation occurs within seconds, without risk of oxidization. Enzyes and vitains are preserved, and the coagulation of proteins is prevented. And the final product either in flake or powder for is highly soluble, allowing rapid reconstitution to a liquid.
