METİN GÜLGEN Mechanical Engineer RE-Consult History of Nordic Folkecenter IRENEC RD INTERNATIONAL 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY CONFERENCE
What is Nordic Folkecenter?
What is Nordic Folkecenter? Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy is a non-profit, independent, organization that provides research, development of technology, training and information and implementation of renewable energy technologies and energy savings in Denmark and throughout the world. Nordic Folkecenter is situated in Sdr. Ydby, a small village in peninsular, overlooking the scenic landscapes around the Limfjord in the North Western Jutland of Denmark. Windmills are seen in every direction you look.

Folkecenter works on 4 major fronts: 1) Development and implementation of renewable energy systems. 2) As sparring partner to manufacturers, local consumer groups and initiators within renewable energy. 3) Disseminating information on renewable energy in Denmark and elsewhere to professionals, trainees, concerned citizen groups and political decision makers focusing on decentralized energy solutions. 4) The village for Green Research, where Folkecenter is situated, demonstrates practical examples of integration of several renewable energy solutions
Brief History of Nordic Folkecenter
History of Nordic Folkecenter In 1970, Preben Maegaard purchased a piece of land from a farmer and changed this land to be the International Craft Training Center. Later, in 1973, it turned itself to be a part of the Nordenfjord World University (Verdensuniversetetet) consisting of 20 local training centers. The global oil crisis in 1974 hit several European nations. The oil price in European countries was hiking nearly to 100 US Dollar per barrel in 1979.
History of Nordic Folkecenter Denmark suffered from the oil crisis more than the other countries. Preben Maegaard made a decision to transform his training center to a center of development and implementation of renewable energy. The date of 1st of July 1983 was the first working day of Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy. First mission was working on a wind energy and the testing of wind turbines.
History of Nordic Folkecenter In 1998, Mali became the first representative of Nordic Folkecenter in Africa. In 2005, JEEP, a non-profit famine relief center in Uganda and Nordic Folkecenter jointly opened JEEP Folkecenter, the second representative of Nordic Folkecenter in Africa. Soon, in 2013, Nordic Folkecenter sent a Canadian trainee named Daron Miller to cooperate with the Association Kologh Naba, in order to install PV panels for 20 schools in Burkina Faso. In the coming future Nordic Folkecenter and Association Kologh Naba will jointly open the third Folkecenter in Burkina Faso.
Technologies in Nordic Folkecenter
Wind Energy Wind Test Site: small scale windmills are constantly being tested, measured or demonstrated for national and international clients. Has platforms and foundations for testing windmills of 1 kw up to 30 kw and mechanical wind pumps. Equipped with data loggers, wind measurement masts, towers for installation of wind turbines and water wells. Wind Test site
Wind Energy DANmark Windmills: Designed and constructed by Folkecenter in Set up in Has been running without any problems. Annual power production: 1.4 million kwh DANmark 525 kw Windmill
Wind Energy The DANmark 75 kw wind turbine: Installed on Folkecenter Test Field in Average production 140 MWh/year. No gears or other mechanical parts have been replaced after hours of operation in a rough environment. Similar windmills have been installed in Brazil, Poland and Russia. DANmark 75 kw Windmill
Wind Energy UNImill: A 7,5 kw windmill developed in 2003 by Folkecenter for educational purposes. Designed with scaled-down components like in bigger windmills. Power Generators: Folkecenter developed and tested a number of different permanent magnet generators for windmills of 2 kw up to 150 kw capacity. UNImill Folkecenter s integrated gear
Solar Energy PV Test Site Comparison of 40 PV panels from 20 different manufacturers in reallife light conditions. 2 strings in parallel connection. Each string has 20 different PV panels in series connection. Real time output and production history can be found on Folkecenter website. PV Test Site
Hybrid System PV-Windmill Hybrid System Developed for supply of electricity in unserved areas. Contains 25 monocrystalline modules, a small windmill and 27 lead-acid batteries. System can supply electricity into a local grid or it can function as a battery charger station. Can produce 3600 kwh on average annually. PV-Windmill Hybrid System
Wave Energy Wave Test Site Located by Nissum Bredning, in the western Lİmfjord, not far from Folkecenter. Has been in operation since November Wave Test Site
Wind-Hydrogen Plant Wind-Hydrogen Plant First and only place in Denmark, wind-hydrogen-car chain with electrolysis plant at 20 kw built in Designed according to EU standarts. Hydrogen is stored in the 350 bar pressure storage tank. Wind-Hydrogen Plant
Fossil-Free Thy In 2012 the Folkecenter opened a new project: Fossil-Free Thy. Thy is almost completely self-sufficient with renewable energy. 100% of electricity and about 85% of heat supply is coming from renewable energy. But the area is aiming for 100% during a few years. For these achievements Thisted received prestigious European Solar Prize in 2007.
Fossil-Free Thy Data Thisted Municipality (2008): 225 windmills kw installed wind power capacity kwel installed CHP capacity Power from wind energy 265 GWh Power consumption of 340 GWh 80% from wind %20 from biogas and CHP waste A small amount of PV
Power Balancing
Power Balancing 1. Further development can make wind & solar power the primary source for electricity and heating. 2. With local surplus of fluctuating electricity it will be used in local CHP plants and replace biomass and natural gas. 3. Biomass and natural gas are back-up storage when wind and solar energy is not sufficient. 4. Biomass and natural gas are limited resources and should not be used when sufficient solar and wind are available.
District Heating & CHP in Thy
District Heating & CHP in Thy
District Heating & CHP in Thy
Integrated Energy System
Integrated Energy System Wind and solar energy are the primary sources for heat and electricity. Biomass is used for back up, and not when wind and solar energy is available. The power flow control directs surplus electricity through the thyristors to the electric boiler. When the electric boiler does not supply sufficient wind-generated heat, the wood pellet stoker is activated. In case there is no wind, and a need for heat electricity, the combined heat and power unit (CHP) running on plant oil, is activated. Combined production of heat and electricity covers the cost of vegetable oil and operation. Over-production of wind and solar generated heat is stored in the litres hot water storage tank to be used at a later time.
