2 Chairman s chat February is here already and the committee has put together a provisional list of events and runs etc. for the coming year which you will find elsewhere in this newsletter. Nothing is set in stone and should you feel that we have left something out or there is something that you would like adding in then you only have to say, we are here to serve you the members. 5 Other News RAID TAN HILL SUNDAY 3RD JANUARY This year I was invited to join a run up to Tan Hill Inn by Barbara and Colin Pearce who run the Les Hiboux 2CV Club in Leeds. The Tan Hill Inn is Gt. Britain s highest standing pub at 1,732ft and stands in bleak Moorland in Arkengarthdale. With a little trepidation my son and I joined them at the start in my 2CV6 Charleston. We all met at the Lawnswood Arms Hotel in North Leeds, where a hot breakfast was on offer if required. Soon many vehicles arrived from all over the country including Scotland, Wales and West Sussex. I counted about 42 with two 2CV vans plus a Citroen Dyane. Ready for the off. Lawnswood Arms Leeds We left the car park at approx am in convey of about 15 vehicles depending on the colour code given. Once we reached Wharfedale valley we re-grouped into one convoy. Following the A660.(65) to Ilkley on the Otley by-pass to Addingham/Bolton Abbey/Burnsall/Grassington. You are now in Wharfedale Valley and the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Onwards to Kilnsey/ Kettlewell/ Starbottom/ Buckden/ turning left to Hubberholme and Hawes where a welcome break was had. Barbara & Colin had set off ahead and kindly set up a table with Mulled Wine and Stollen cake for everyone in the car park just above the Wensleydale Creamery. Above Hubberholme on a very wet Sunday morning. Parked by the river Wharfe.
6 Some more 2CVs joined us in Hawes who had arrived from the Lake District. After leaving the car park and through the village turned left up to Buttertubs Pass, Thwaite to Keld finally arriving at the welcome Tan Hill Inn. This final stretch was very steep with hairpin bends and everyone was down to first gear. Quite a pull for a 602cc engine. However everyone arrived safely in fog and driving rain and was pleased to see a log burning fire and a welcome pint of beer. On handing in our registration cards to check we had arrived, we ordered a well earned meal. Giant Yorkshire Puds with sausage or steak pie with all the trimmings. VERY GOOD. We were made very welcome by all the 2CVs and pub staff who served very quickly in view of the many people there, including many walkers who had crawled in on all fours. (just goes to show not all fools are locked up!!) A film show was ongoing of passed Raids to Tan Hill whilst the food was being consumed. The presentations began with everyone getting a certificate signed by the landlord depicting we had participated in the 2016 RAID TAN HILL and achieved maximum height on 3rd January Outside the highest pub. One of two snowploughs ready for rescue. A framed plaque was presented to the person who had travelled the furthest, which was a guy from INVERNESS who had set off at 1.00am, travelled to Leeds, up to the pub and was going back the same day just him and a little dog. (worked out the approx mileage covered of 745 miles) He certainly deserved it!! We set off back approx 4.30 pm by which time it was just about dark and still driving rain. We took the route back to Keld, Thwaite, Muker, Gunnerside on the B6270 to Reeth. By this time we were driving through floods on very narrow roads (some unmade in parts) with only the odd sheep in our headlights, looking at us as if we had arrived from outer- space. As much to say What s these fools doing up here. Turning south to Leyburn, Ripon, Harrogate, Leeds to Wakefield. All the time on our return journey we had a couple of guys from Batley who asked if they could follow us, as they were not sure of the way. I was never so pleased to see my home as I was that night. But the little engine kept going through all floods, hills and bumps the landscape could throw at us. (no mobile signal up there if it had) A very big thanks must go to Barbara and Colin Pearce and everyone involved from the Les Hiboux Club Please let it be better weather next year? Tony Lucas.
