3 Getting started Where? Find a fixed place t study (a particular desk/rm at hme, a spt in the library, etc.) that becmes firmly assciated in yur mind with prductive wrk. All the equipment and materials yu need shuld be within reach, and the rm shuld be well lit and ventilated, but nt t cmfrtable! Turn yur rm int a psitive learning envirnment. Keep bks and ntes n the desk t a minimum and decrate yur walls with clurful ntes and key vcab. Music is fine as lng as it helps yu t study and blcks ut distracting nises. The very best sund t study t is thught t be that f Barque cmpsers r Mzart. Experiments shw that brains are psitively stimulated and IQs bsted by such music. When? It s impssible t cram fr a Languages exam! Little and ften is the best plicy when it cmes t French revisin. Yu will wrk ut a system that suits yu, but many peple find that three minute sessins f French revisin per day is mre effective than ding 2-3 hurs at a time. Fr example, yu culd start ff by learning sme vcabulary in the mrning, d sme listening befre lunch and a few reading exercises in the afternn. Hwever, the mst imprtant thing is that yu re cncentrating and wrking hard! What and hw? Remember that it's all abut being active and fcused n tasks, nt time! Knw at the start f a sessin what yu want t have cmpleted by the end f the perid. Make the tasks specific and realistic, nt vague and large. Vcabulary: Aim t learn 10 wrds per day. Use the vcab pages at the end f each mdule and chse 10 wrds frm each sectin. Als use the vcabulary exercise n Activelearn! It s best t spend minutes in the mrning revising them, then get a friend r family member t test yu n them at lunchtime r the end f the day. Make a list f all the wrds yu find mst difficult t remember and return t these every cuple f days. Write the wrds ut and clur-cde them (masculine nuns, feminine nuns, plural nuns, verbs, adjectives, ther wrds). Write them n Pst-It ntes (French n ne side, English n the ther) and stick them arund the huse. Remember t revise hw the wrds sunds, nt just hw it lks. Use the Online Audi Dictinary (see belw) r create a vki (vki.cm) and type in each wrd. (Yu dn t need t save the vki each time.) Repeat it several times and try and write it phnetically. If yu re a visual learner, try making a mind-map fr each tpic area r sub-tpic. D this withut yur bk/dictinary first, and then allw yurself 2 minutes t lk at yur bk befre adding t it. 4 Numbers can be tricky. Listen ut fr ages, dates, times and prices and nte them dwn. Always listen t a passage at least twice befre cmmitting t an answer. Try and repeat sentences t yurself mre slwly s the wrds sink in. Lk at the transcript (if available) and write dwn any vcabulary yu didn t recgnise. Try listening t German radi fr 5 minutes (increasing this with time) and make ntes in English. D this with a friend and cmpare what yu ve written! (See belw fr useful sites). Reading: Lk at the questin first. What s the tpic? Which wrds can yu expect t cme up? Hw culd the examiner try and catch yu ut? Read the passage carefully. Identify key wrds, then lk fr thse tricky little wrds that can change the meaning f a sentence (see belw fr a few examples!) Find the verbs. What tense are they in? Is the writer talking abut the present (ich spiele), past (ich habe gegessen, ich aβ), future (Ich werde essen )r a pssibility (Ich wϋrde essen, ich möchte essen)? If yu re reading a series f statements by several peple, and the questin asks yu t write the name f ne f the peple, try writing a brief summary f what each persn has said in English.
