A New Era Begins. Following a triumphant 75 th anniversary season last year, American Ballet Theatre is energized and renewed as we look forward to the next chapter of our illustrious history. During the 2016 Spring Season at the Metropolitan Opera House, ABT honors our visionary Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky with a Festival of his adventurous and thought-provoking work that includes the AMERICAN PREMIERE of the The Golden Cockerel, the return of last season s critically acclaimed The Sleeping Beauty, the exhilarating full-evening Shostakovich Trilogy, and a WORLD PREMIERE ballet, performed to Bernstein s Serenade after Plato s Symposium. Of course, the breathtaking athleticism and artistry of our remarkable roster of world-class dancers will continue to bring fresh and spellbinding performances to the great classics, and the upcoming 2016 Spring Season will be no exception. ABT invites you to join us as we begin a new journey of exploring the magic of movement. 3 Ratmansky Festival THE GOLDEN COCKEREL Choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, inspired by Michel Fokine s original production Music by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov American Premiere American audiences will get the first chance to feast their eyes and ears on this exotic ballet, based on Alexander Pushkin s folktale and the hit of Diaghilev s Ballet Russes season in 1914, when ABT offers the premiere performances this Spring. With his inimitable style and sensitivity, Ratmansky creates rich characters for the seductive Queen, a marvelously gullible King and the darkly magical cockerel all set against a kaleidoscope of vibrant color that evoke a mythical Russia. Subscribe Today The American Premiere of The Golden Cockerel has been generously underwritten by an anonymous donor. This production has been generously supported through an endowed gift from The Toni and Martin Sosnoff New Works Fund. Skylar Brandt and Duncan Lyle. Photo by Fabrizio Ferri. 4 Ratmansky Festival The Sleeping beauty Choreography by Marius Petipa Staging and additional choreography by Alexei Ratmansky Music by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky Alexei Ratmansky s production is a fascinating, important staging often revelatory. It s the finest reconstruction I ve ever seen of a dance work, praised The New York Times at its 2015 ABT Premiere. Featuring 400 lavish costumes, 210 intricate wigs and magnificent storybook sets, the beloved story of the beautiful Princess Aurora, the evil sorceress Carabosse and the awakening kiss of a handsome prince is certain to cast a spell on your heart and imagination. ABT gratefully acknowledges Lead Sponsor of The Sleeping Beauty, David H. Koch. Additional leadership support is generously provided by the Lloyd E. Rigler - Lawrence E. Deutsch Foundation. ABT gratefully acknowledges Linda Allard for her generous support of costumes for The Sleeping Beauty. Additional support is generously provided by Avery and Andrew Barth, The Susan and Leonard Feinstein Foundation, Caroline and Edward Hyman, Howard S. Paley, Linda and Martin Fell, Mr. and Mrs. Austin T. Fragomen, The Ted and Mary Jo Shen Charitable Gift Fund, and Michael and Sue Steinberg. Support has also been provided by the National Endowment for the Arts. This production is generously supported through an endowed gift from the Toni and Martin Sosnoff New Works Fund. This production of The Sleeping Beauty is a co-production with Teatro alla Scala. Photo by Rosalie O Connor.

Ratmansky Festival Ratmansky Triple bill: World Premiere Seven Sonatas Firebird Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky explores the nature of love in a World Premiere set to Leonard Bernstein s Serenade after Plato s Symposium. This triple bill includes his delicate Seven Sonatas with music by Domenico Scarlatti and the enchanting Firebird, performed to Stravinsky s famous score. Shostakovich Trilogy Fascinating, poetic, enigmatic. Alexei Ratmansky s Shostakovich Trilogy includes expressions of ebullience, heroism, affection, wit and inspiration, raved The New York Times at its 2013 ABT Premiere. In a highlyanticipated return engagement, Ratmansky s acclaimed full-evening program, performed to Dmitri Shostakovich s orchestral works, features Symphony #9, Chamber Symphony and Piano Concerto #1. David H. Koch is the Lead Underwriter of Shostakovich Trilogy. Additional leadership support has been generously provided by The Susan and Leonard Feinstein Foundation. ABT gratefully acknowledges Linda Allard for her generous support of costumes for this production. Mary Jo and Ted Shen, Mrs. Marjorie S. Isaac, and an anonymous donor are Leading Sponsors of this production. Additional support has been provided by Edward and Caroline Hyman, Charlotte and Macdonald Mathey, Michele and Steve Pesner, and Michael and Sue Steinberg. This production has been generously supported through an endowed gift from The Toni and Martin Sosnoff New Works Fund. This production has been made possible with public funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Alexei Ratmansky World Premiere has been generously supported through an endowed gift from The Toni and Martin Sosnoff New Works Fund. Seven Sonatas is generously supported by the Toni and Martin Sosnoff New Works Fund. David H. Koch is the Lead Underwriter of Firebird. Firebird is generously supported through an endowed gift from The Toni and Martin Sosnoff New Works Fund. Linda Allard is the Leading Sponsor of costumes for Firebird. Additional costume underwriting support has been provided by Caroline Hyman. ABT gratefully acknowledges the generous support of Leading Sponsors The Susan and Leonard Feinstein Foundation and Charlotte and Macdonald Mathey. Additional support has generously been provided by the Sol and Margaret Berger Foundation, Brian and Darlene Heidtke, Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton E. James, Jill L. Leinbach, Andrew J. Martin- Weber, James M. and Nora C. Orphanides, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, and an anonymous donor. Support for costume and set design has generously been provided by Dr. Coco Lazaroff. 6 LA FILLE MAL GARDÉE Choreography by Frederick Ashton Music by Ferdinand Hérold Making a welcome return to ABT s repertoire after more than a decade-long absence, Ashton s final full-length ballet features beautifully detailed characters and poetic lyricism perfectly suited to its story of young love. In this pastoral comedy, a farmer s widow is determined to marry her daughter off to a wealthy man s son rather than to the poor farmer with whom she is head-overheels smitten. The picture-book countryside setting of maypoles, ponies and dancing hens add to the bucolic backdrop of this sunny addition to the season. 7 Swan lake Choreography by Kevin McKenzie After Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov Music by Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky Among the great classics, Swan Lake remains the quintessential ballet, the one that defines the standards of the Company, tests its dancers and ennobles the spirit of the audience. This romantic fable of ill-fated passion, dreamlike transformation and ultimate forgiveness is set to Tchaikovsky s glorious score. With breathtaking choreography and visually magnificent sets evoking a Renaissance court, the fabled lake of the swans rises into view, inspiring awe for generations to come. This production has been generously underwritten by R. Chemers Neustein. Costumes for Swan Lake are generously sponsored by the Ellen Everett Kimiatek Costume Preservation Trust. Photo by Gene Schiavone.

romeo and juliet Choreography by Kenneth MacMillaN Music by Sergei Prokofiev Kenneth MacMillan s interpretation of Shakespeare s enduring romantic tragedy has become one of ABT s signature productions. Against a sumptuous setting in Renaissance Italy, MacMillan weaves a dance tapestry rich in character nuance and sensuality, and Sergei Prokofiev s instantly recognizable music underscores the lyric beauty and passion of this beloved ballet s star-crossed lovers. American Ballet Theatre s performances of Romeo and Juliet are generously underwritten through an endowed gift from Ali and Monica Wambold. Alessandra Ferri. Photo by Fabrizio Ferri. Top: Hee Seo and Cory Stearns. Photo by MIRA. Subscribe Today Alessandra Ferri Homecoming A cherished artist since her first performance with ABT in 1985, Ms. Ferri returns to perform one of her signature roles as Juliet on June 23 evening, Thursday Series 42 and TH6.

Sylvia Choreography by Frederick Ashton Music by Léo Delibes A ravishing fantasy set amid verdant forests and majestic temples, Ashton s mythological love story unites the huntress Sylvia and a lovelorn shepherd with the divine intervention of the deity Eros. At its heart, Sylvia boasts an incomparable role for its heroine showcasing her dramatic range and astonishing technique, performed against a lushly romantic, rococo setting to a splendid score by Léo Delibes. This production is generously supported through an endowed gift from Ruth and Harold Newman. Polina Semionova and Roberto Bolle. Photo by Gene Schiavone.

Le Corsaire Choreography after Marius Petipa and Konstantin sergeyev Music by Adolphe Adam, Cesare Pugni, Léo Delibes, Riccardo Drigo and Prince Oldenbourg Discover a treasure trove of virtuoso dancing in this swashbuckling comedy! This exotic fable of a dashing pirate s love for a beautiful harem girl journeys through a tapestry of captive maidens, rich sultans, suspenseful abductions and dramatic rescues culminating in a shipwreck that s one of the most breathtaking spectacles in all of ballet. Boasting over 120 performers, Le Corsaire perfectly showcases explosive bravura dancing from ABT s star-studded roster of dancers. Subscribe Today American Ballet Theatre s performances of Le Corsaire are generously underwritten through an endowed gift from Irene and Fred Shen. This production is generously supported through an endowed gift from Anka K. Palitz, in memory of Clarence Y. Palitz, Jr. Veronika Part and Cory Stearns. Photo by Fabrizio Ferri. Left: Stella Abrera.
