2 New Zealand born choreographer Corey Baker creates distinctive dance works which give audiences surprising experiences of the art form. Ambitious to reach a broad audience, Corey works in theatrical and outdoor settings, frequently looking beyond dance for creative inspiration. About the show Following its sell out opening season in 2015, Corey Baker s theatre production Kapa Haka Tale is back. Inspired by the mesmerizing native Māori kapa haka performing art of his native New Zealand, Kapa Haka Tale is based on the mythological love story of Hinemoa and Tutanekai. Part musical theatre, part dance-drama, Kapa Haka Tale underpins an enchanting and tender narrative with traditional tribal footwork, weaponry work and spine-tingling chanting and singing to produce a thrilling expression of Māori culture. With a cast of eight multi-talented performers, Kapa Haka Tale is a familyfriendly, feel-good show for which Corey s creative team Yann Seabra (set and costumes), Shaun Prickimage (video) and Declan Randall (lighting) have conjured a thrilling production to invoke the magic of this legendary tale. Touring in 2017 to mid-scale venues, performances are accompanied by a workshop and outreach programme; Haka workshops are a great way to introduce audiences to dance. In 2015, over 15,000 people took part in Haka workshops as part of the tours of Kapa Haka Tale and its outdoor sister production Haka Day Out.

CBD commissions include work for Prix de Lausanne, Leipzig Festival, Sydney Youth Ballet Company, Notting Hill Festival, Rambert Youth Dance Company, elevate Dance Company, Kneehigh Theatre Company, International Dance Festival Birmingham (IDFB) 2014 and Cultural Olympiad. Corey Baker was International Resident Choreographer for IDFB 2014 and is the newly appointed associate creative director of a prestigious multi-art festival in Birmingham, Birmingham Weekender.

4 Established in 2008 by the shockingly talented Corey Baker, Corey Baker Dance is a company whose style is as diverse and as unpredictable as their performances everythingdance.com COREY BAKER Raised in Christchurch, New Zealand, Corey trained in classical ballet in New Zealand and Australia before moving to Basel, Switzerland to join dance company Ballet Theatre Basel, then going on to train with Martha Graham s Steve Brooks in Houston, Texas. Moving to the UK, Corey joined BalletBoyz Dance Company, and went on to work with Russell Maliphant, Jiri Kylian, William Forsythe, Mark Brew Dance Company, Shaun Parker and Company and many more. Corey Baker is an Associate Artist of DanceXchange, Birmingham, and is an Associate Creative Director of Birmingham Weekender. Kapa Haka Tale captivates audiences through powerful and mesmerising choreography, ethereal digital creatures, and a set, rich with colour, nature and beautiful tribal Māori art.
