4 Principal s Welcome Letter Dear Colleague, Thank you for expressing an interest in the post of Teacher of ICT at The Bulwell Academy. The Academies programme is a Government flagship policy designed to transform educational attainment and to contribute to the regeneration of local communities. We opened as an academy in September 2009 and our state of the art, bespoke designed, 27 million pound building with the very best educational resources and ICT facilities opened in September, In the development of our education strategy we are supported by Edge and Thomas Telford School. Edge is an independent education foundation. It is dedicated to raising the status of practical and vocational learning, so that all young people have the opportunity to achieve their potential, and the UK's workforce is equipped with the skills to be successful in the modern economy. Edge believes that 'learning by doing' is as important as academic learning, and that there are many paths to success. Thomas Telford School has been at the forefront of educational developments nationally, by pioneering radical ways of organising and delivering education since its opening in A set of key characteristics have been continually developed and refined to create a highly effective template for organisation and a value system that underpins a very student-centred ethos. The Academy is organised around a series of learning areas, with specialist provision for Science, Expressive Arts, PE and Technology. We offer an innovative and flexible curriculum. Students complete Key Stage 3 in two years and have a three year Key Stage 4 programme including early entry in Year 10 and a personalised Year 11 programme. We offer post-16 provision through our state-of-the-art sixth form. We require a passionate and highly motivated Teacher of ICT who is either in the early stages of their career, or is an experienced teacher looking to develop. You will have high expectations and a passion for working collaboratively to drive forward our vision to establish an exciting and thriving enterprise culture across the academy. The need to demonstrate excellent subject knowledge and to consistently teach inspirational lessons is essential. 7 Living and working in Nottingham The Bulwell Academy Nottingham has an impressive and growing economy, coupled with a high standard and quality of living, making Nottingham the place to be. Nottingham is experiencing impressive growth. Company profitability is improving and business failures falling. House prices, while still very competitive with the rest of the UK, are also rising ahead of the average UK increase - a sure sign of a healthy economy. Against this sound economic backdrop, people benefit both from the nightlife of the cosmopolitan city of Nottingham and from the county s mix of quiet market towns and rolling fields. The industrial heritage of the coalfields on the western side of the county, contrast with the open rural areas of the county alongside, the Leicestershire border, where rolling countryside meets wooded landscapes. The county has literary heritage - romantic poet Lord Byron and novelist D H Lawrence were both inspired by the Nottinghamshire countryside - and physical heritage, with a wide range of country houses, halls and gardens to visit. And, of course, who can forget the legend of Robin Hood - Nottinghamshire's most famous son and the world's favourite folk hero. With the city of Nottingham at its heart, the county of Nottinghamshire is an outstanding place to live and work. Nottingham combines the cutting edge contemporary with fascinating heritage; excitement and vibrancy with the tranquil. Throughout the county of Nottinghamshire, there's stunning scenery and a wealth of historic buildings to explore beyond those connected to the legend of Robin Hood. The city and its surrounding area is steeped in history and has a number of English Heritage sites including Newstead Abbey - the ancestral home of the poet Lord Byron, and the Caves of Nottingham - an ancient labyrinth of sandstone caves buried beneath the city. In terms of arts and culture, Nottingham offers a blend of classical and contemporary at venues including the restored 18th century Theatre Royal, the Royal Concert Hall, Nottingham Playhouse, National Arena, and the as well as a host of smaller galleries and exhibition forums. From Andy Warhol retrospectives to the St Petersburg ballet, these venues continue to host events of international calibre. Nottingham is also committed to supporting local talent. As well as the innovative annual NOW festival the city as a joint recipient within the Three Cities group plans to use Lottery Money for urban culture to fund more events to showcase local artists. With The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Opera North and the National Film Theatre all basing their regional operations in Nottingham, the city truly is a magnet for those looking for great entertainment. The city offers an enviable range of sports activities and nationally renowned venues for the dedicated sportsman and sideline enthusiast: international test match cricket, professional football, ATP tennis, water sports, Superleague ice hockey, and horse racing... just a few examples of what Nottingham has on offer! For those looking for more tranquil surroundings, Colwick Park just lies just outside the city centre, the Peak District National Park is just an hour's drive away, and of course, there's the world famous Sherwood Forest. Nottingham s leisure scene has exploded in recent years, with around 400 restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs mostly clustered around the renovated Castle Wharf area, Hockley, the Lace Market and the Cornerhouse at Trinity Square. For the fine dining, Nottingham has several Michelin featured restaurants and for exotic tastes, the world s food is brought to you with everything from Japanese to South American cuisine. All this, coupled with a low cost of living compared with London and other major cities, leads to a quality of life that s hard to beat. Page 7
