4 EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT Palm Beach State s Emergency Management programs provide valuable opportunities to earn multiple FEMA certifications and college credits. EMERGENCY Emergency Management Emergency managers have the tremendous responsibility of planning for an unpredictable world. They coordinate crisis management activities, provide disaster preparedness training, and develop emergency strategies and procedures for natural disasters, hostage situations, wartime and technological incidents (e.g., hazardous materials spills). The 100% online College Credit Certificate program in Emergency Management will give you the background and practical skills to enter the field or advance your career. The CCC provides students with many national certifications from the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA), and your earned credits may be applied toward the Emergency Management or Fire Science A.S. degrees. AS CCC 5 The Associate in Science degree in Emergency Management further explores the knowledge and skills needed to establish command, coordinate communications, evacuate citizens and execute clean-up operations. Credits earned in the A.S. degree may transfer into Palm Beach State s Bachelor of Applied Science degree in Supervision and Management. 6

5 EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES Palm Beach State s outstanding EMS programs are approved by the Florida Bureau of Emergency Medical Services and follow the most current U.S. Department of Transportation National Standard Curriculum. Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B) Chances are you have passed an EMT-Basic on the road. They often drive ambulances, but they also work in fire departments and hospital emergency rooms. Wherever they serve, EMT-Bs are a vital link in the lifesaving chain, providing basic emergency care such as stabilizing patients, controlling bleeding and giving oxygen. In day or evening classes, this one-semester, limited access Applied Technology Diploma program prepares you for this great career. Graduates are eligible to take the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) exam, which is the Florida-approved route to becoming state certified. In addition, all program credits may be applied toward the College s A.S. degrees in Emergency Medical Services or Fire Science. This program is a prerequisite for the Paramedic program. Paramedic EMERGENCY ATD CCC Paramedics help save lives in emergencies by performing advanced life support procedures such as intubation to clear the airway and defibrillation in cases of cardiac arrest. Our CoAEMSP-accredited*, 12-month College Credit Certificate program includes clinical experiences in area hospitals and on emergency response units where you care for patients. You must meet certain criteria to be placed in the selection pool for this limited access program, including completion of the EMT-Basic program. Once you graduate, you may take the test for Florida Paramedic Certification to practice as a paramedic. Plus, all program credits may be applied toward the A.S. degree in Emergency Medical Services or Fire Science. 7 *Palm Beach State College s Paramedic program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs ( upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP). Paramedics with an A.S. degree are in demand for positions as instructors and supervisors, and the state of fers additional pay as an incentive. In the remaining coursework, you ll take general college courses and have a choice of electives in microcomputer applications, health care concepts, public personnel management, educational psychology and more. Credits earned in the A.S. degree program may be applied to Palm Beach State s bachelor s degree in Supervision and Management. 8

8 13 Public Safety Telecommunications PSAV When you call 911, who answers? Public safety dispatchers play a critical role as the initial first responders. Their ability to quickly dispatch appropriate public safety resources is often a matter of life or death. Florida law mandates that all 911 dispatchers complete 232 hours of training and pass a certification exam. This state-approved course gives students an additional 16 hours devoted to test preparation and exceeds curriculum requirements by giving students real-world learning experiences. Students go on field trips to medical centers and facilities like the Trauma Hawk air ambulance base and observe professional dispatchers in action, seeing firsthand what the job entails and how it impacts lives. Once certified, graduates are ready to embark on high-paying, high-demand careers as dispatchers for police, fire and ambulance agencies. CRIMINAL JUSTICE Criminal Justice Technology The credits you earn in the Law Enforcement and Corrections Of ficer basic recruit academies may be applied toward the Criminal Justice T echnology Associate in Science degree. By earning this degree, you gain an edge for promotions and qualify for new career opportunities. You also may be entitled to receive additional pay from the state as an incentive for getting the degree. Choose from two concentrations: Law Enforcement concentration is for the Criminal Justice Institute student (Corrections and Law Enforcement) and the corrections or law enforcement officer who wants to advance in his or her career. Non-Sworn concentration is for students who plan to pursue a criminal justice career and work in a law enforcement agency or related field, but not as a sworn officer. Each concentration includes coursework in police administration, forensic science and criminal law. In addition, earned credits may be applied to Palm Beach State s bachelor s degree in Supervision and Management. AS 14
