Description This course is intended to familiarize new firefighters or persons who are interested in the field of fire protection with the basics of the fire service, including the history, traditions, terminology, organization, and the basic operations of modern fire departments. 2 Competencies and 1. Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the scope, purpose, and organizational structure of the fire and emergency service. a. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the rich history and traditions of the American fire service. b. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the basic types of fire departments, how most fire departments are organized, how fire trucks are staffed, and how staffing coverage needs are met. c. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the various ranks and positions found in fire service organizations. d. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the recruitment, application, and selection process for firefighter positions. e. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the training required, both initial training for new firefighters as well as the ongoing training for existing firefighters, to maintain their knowledge and skills and to keep pace with new technologies. o learner can pass the written exam 2. Demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of the components of fire prevention, including public education, code enforcement, public information, and public and private fire protection systems. a. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the various components of a comprehensive fire prevention program. b. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of common fire hazards, and what can be done to lessen or eliminate their risks. c. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of public fire education. d. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of what fire codes are, and how they relate to a fire prevention program. e. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of how fire safety inspections are conducted. f. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the role of fire prevention personnel in investigating the cause and origin of fires. EASTERN ARIZONA COLLEGE Introduction to Fire Science

3 3. Demonstrate a basic knowledge and understanding of fire as a chemical reaction, the major phases of fire, and the main factors that influence fire spread and fire behavior. a. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the basic science of how fire is defined. b. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the four components of the fire tetrahedron. c. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of how heat is transmitted and how fire is spread. d. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of heat is transmitted and how fire is spread. e. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the various classifications of fire, from Class A to Class K. 4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge and general understanding of building construction, how the construction of a particular building relates to fire spread and fire control, and how fire detection and suppression systems can make buildings safer. a. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the five general types of building construction. b. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the effects of fire exposure on common materials, such as wood, masonry, concrete, and steel. c. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the specific hazards to fire fighters relating to the various types of building construction. d. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the basic types of fire detection and alarm systems. e. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the basic types of fire suppression systems, including sprinkler systems and standpipe systems. EASTERN ARIZONA COLLEGE Introduction to Fire Science

4 5. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the various outside public and private support organizations, and their role on assisting local fire departments. a. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the role of trade organizations such as the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). b. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the role of the Insurance Services Office (ISO) in evaluating and Grading fire department capabilities. c. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the role of Federal organizations, such as the US Fire Administration (USFA), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and the Department of Homeland Security. d. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the role of the State, County, and local governments in assisting local fire departments with providing fire protection and safety services. e. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the relationship between fire departments and law enforcement agencies. 6. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of fire department facilities and equipment, including fire stations, fire vehicles, and related equipment. a. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the various types of facilities required for a modern fire department s operations. b. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of fire station design, and what facilities are included in modern fire stations. c. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of fire station placement, and how the location of fire stations affects emergency response times. d. Gain a working and understanding of telephone systems and radio dispatch systems, the importance of telecommunication (dispatch), and how dispatch centers operate. e. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the vehicles used by modern fire departments, including the various types of engines, ladder trucks, and specialty vehicles. 5 7. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of fire department organization and management. a. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the basic principles of organization, such as Unity of Command, Division of Labor, and Span of Control. b. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the various types of aid agreements used by fire departments, including the difference between Mutual Aid and Automatic Aid Systems. c. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the National Incident Management System (NIMS), more commonly referred to as the Incident Command System (ICS), and how it relates to fire department operations. d. Gain a working and understanding of basic components of the ICS organization, including Command, Operations, Planning, Logistics, and Administration, and duties and responsibilities of each. e. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the use of sectors, divisions, group, and branches as a part of the ICS organization for a major incident. f. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of the three basic organization levels: Strategic, tactical and Task. g. Gain a working knowledge and understanding of Critical Incident Stress Debriefings (CISD), what they are, and when they should be used. Types of Instruction Classroom Presentation. 6 Grading Information Grading Rationale Each instructor has the flexibility to develop evaluative procedures within the following parameters. 1. Written exams must represent at least 60% of the course grade. 2. Final exam must represent at least 20% of the course grade. 3. The Post Test is to be embedded in the final exam and must represent at least 10% of the course grade. Students who do not take the Post Test will have their grade dropped by one letter. 4.
