1 What is the job outlook and salary range? Employment needs for Dental Assistants is expected to increase 29% nationwide by 2016, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. The employment market for Dental Assistants is very good and there is a demand for those with this career training throughout Florida and the nation. The average salary for Dental Assistants in the Southeastern USA is $12 to $15 per hour. A range of career opportunities for trained Dental Assistants includes everything from chair-side assisting to education; work in specialty dental offices such as orthodontics, dental supply sales, insurance, public health and other fields. How are students admitted to the Northwest Florida State College program? All eligible applicants are accepted unless the number exceeds the space available, in which case a point system is used to select students. Students with the highest point totals are admitted first. If there is a tie among point totals, a random lottery among tied students is used to determine admission. What is the cost of the program? Total current tuition for the 41-credit program for in-state students is approximately $2,800. Out-of-state tuition is approximately four times the in-state tuition fee. Other cost estimates include: Uniform, $197; lab fees, $745; and books, $317. The total estimated cost to complete the program is $4,900. National Board Exam fee is $300. Is Financial Aid available? An extensive financial aid program through federal, state and local sources is available at NWF State College. Federal sources include the Pell grant, college work-study, loans and scholarships. 2 General Information The program at Northwest Florida State College is a 3-semester vocational program leading to a certificate in. The program provides students with the educational background and clinical experiences necessary for safe practice in the field of. The curriculum includes content in dental sciences, communications, dental assisting clinical science, and expanded functions. The NWF State College program requires full-time enrollment. Students who successfully complete the program receive a certificate for in the state of Florida including those expanded duties successfully completed in the program and legally delegated to dental assistants according to the Florida Dental Practice Act. Students are also prepared to take the Dental Assisting National Board examination to receive a national credential. Accreditation The NWF State College program is accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. The Commission on Dental Accreditation is a specialized accrediting body recognized by the United States Department of Education. Dental Assistants perform various patient care, office and laboratory duties in both small and large dental practices. Dental Assistants help make patients as comfortable as possible, prepare patients for treatment and obtain dental records. During a patient exam, Dental Assistants work chair-side with the dentist as part of the dental team. They hand instruments and materials to dentists, and keep patients mouths clear by using suction or other devices. They also sterilize instruments, prepare tray setups for dental procedures, and instruct patients on postoperative and general oral health care. Dental Assistants may perform expanded functions such making impressions and preparing materials for restorations, making radiographs, and processing dental x-ray film. They also may remove sutures, apply topical anesthetics to gums as well as cavity-preventive agents to teeth, remove excess cement used in restorative procedures, place rubber dams on the teeth to isolate them for individual treatment, clean and polish removable appliances, and make temporary crowns. Laboratory duties include making casts from preliminary impressions. Dental Assistants with front office duties schedule and confirm appointments, receive patients, keep treatment records, send bills, receive payments, and order dental supplies. Request official transcripts from high school, GED or any post-high school institution attended. A copy of unofficial transcripts may be initially submitted with your application. Items required of students admitted to the program: A physical exam with immunizations, CPR, the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE), Hogan Personality Inventory, and a background check.
3 Early Childhood Education What classes meet program requirements? What is the job outlook? Students completing the A.A.S. degree in Early Childhood Education at Northwest Florida State College will complete all requirements for the Florida Child Care Professional Credential (FCCPC) and the Florida Director Credential. Early Childhood teachers may advance to administrative positions in child care/early education programs. There is currently a regional shortage of Early Childhood teachers. The local salary range is $8 to $14 per hour. When are the classes taught? Can I work while enrolled? The majority of coursework in this program is offered in the evening, on weekends and through distance learning to accommodate working students. Classes are offered primarily at the NWF State College Niceville campus. The majority of students seeking the A.A.S. in Early Childhood Education are already employed in the Early Childhood Education field. What is the cost of the program? NWF State College fees are the lowest in Florida of any college or university. A special in-state fee is available at NWF State College for Alabama residents. 4 Early Childhood Education General Information The Early Childhood Education program at Northwest Florida State College is a two year program of study leading to an Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) degree in Early Childhood Education. Students may also complete college credit certificates in Preschool, Infant/Toddler, Child Care Management and Child Development/Early Intervention while completing the A.A.S. degree requirements. The program provides students with the educational background necessary to implement developmentally appropriate practices in a high quality early childhood education program. The NWF State College program includes content in child development, nutrition, health and safety, classroom teaching practices, assessment of young children, working with families, guidance and discipline, and administration in early childhood education settings. What is an Early Childhood Education Teacher? Early Childhood Education teachers work in a variety of settings. These settings include private and public childcare programs, Head Start, military childcare programs, and private and public preschool and pre-kindergarten programs. Early childhood teachers work in classrooms with children from age birth to pre- Kindergarten. Responsibilities include maintaining a safe and healthy environment, planning and implementing the daily program, completing developmental assessments on young children, and communicating with families.
