2 FACT SHEET ELK GROVE VILLAGE FIREFIGHTER The Elk Grove Village Fire & Police Commission will be creating a new eligibility list for the position of FIREFIGHTER. Eligibility Requirements Candidates must meet the following requirements: Must be at least 21 years of age as of written examination date, and less than 35 years of age as of hire date unless otherwise exempt by statute. Must be a United States citizen or meet requirements for citizenship Must possess EMT Paramedic license by August 31, Must possess valid CPAT/Ladder Climb card at time of application and time of appointment. Card is considered valid within one year of issue date. Must read, write and speak English. Must be in excellent physical condition and have good vision. Must be of good moral character; must not have been convicted of any crimes or guilty of infamous or notoriously disgraceful conduct as described in the Illinois Compiled Statutes 65ILCS5/ Must be legally eligible to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Illinois and must possess a valid Illinois driver s license at the time of hire. Applications IOS Recruitment is managing the application process on behalf of the Village of Elk Grove. Applicants will be required to purchase the application for a nonrefundable fee of $40. Visit to complete the online application. Applications will be available from June 22, 2015 to July 27, All applications and required documents must be submitted to IOS Recruitment by 12:00 noon on Monday, July 27, 2015 or candidate will be considered ineligible to participate in the testing process. Applicants are wholly responsible for ensuring the completeness and accuracy of their application. Testing Process Our testing process will consist of the following components/events: Mandatory Orientation Written Examination Initial Eligibility List Assignment of Preference Points Final Eligibility List Background Investigation Polygraph Examination Individual Oral Interview Psychological Evaluation Medical Evaluation
3 Mandatory Orientation & Written Examination The mandatory orientation and written exam will be conducted on Saturday, August 8, 2015 at the Charles J. Zettek Municipal Complex, 901 Wellington Avenue, Elk Grove Village, IL Doors will open for sign-in at 7:30 a.m. and the orientation will begin at 8:00 a.m. Applicants are required to arrive at the testing location no later than 8:00 a.m. to sign-in. During the orientation the Fire & Police Commission will present an overview of the hiring process and the Fire Department will provide information on its operation. The written examination will consist of two primary components: a traditional firefighter entry examination and a situational judgment test. Both will be administered in a paperand-pencil format. The firefighter exam will assess job-related cognitive abilities, personality characteristics, and behavioral traits. The situational judgment test will assess job-related skills associated with interpersonal and problem-solving interactions similar to those you may have on the job. You do not need to have any firefighter experience, training or knowledge to successfully complete these tests. Preference Points Candidates that pass the written examination will be offered an opportunity to claim preference points as follows: Veterans Education 5 points for a minimum of one year active service with honorable discharge. Maximum of four education points awarded; candidate may claim only one of the following: 1 point Associate s Degree (non fire science) 2 points Bachelor s Degree (non fire science) 3 points Associate s Degree in Fire Science or Emergency Management 4 points Bachelor s Degree or above in Fire Science, Fire Service Management, Fire Service Administration, Public Administration, Public Safety Emergency Management. Paramedic Maximum of three points may be claimed for paramedic licensure: 3 points IDPH Paramedic License with practice privileges in the Northwest Community EMS System as documented in a Letter of Good Standing from the System. 2 points IDPH Paramedic License 0 points National Registry Paramedic License Firefighter One (1) point will be awarded for FF II certification Maximum of 13 preference points awarded per applicant. - Elk Grove Village is an Equal Opportunity Employer -
4 Agency Profile Location Counties Elk Grove Village is adjacent to Chicago's northwest city limits (O'Hare International Airport), 22 miles from Chicago's Loop. Cook and DuPage Land Area: Population: 10.9 Square Miles (Residential 5.5 Square Miles) (Industrial 5.4 Square Miles) 33,127 (2010 Census) The Department The Elk Grove Village Fire Department responds to approximately 5,000 incidents annually, providing complete Fire, Rescue, and Emergency Medical Services to those who live, work, and travel within Elk Grove Village. This full-time Department consists of 66 Firefighters, 15 Lieutenants, 5 Battalion Chiefs, 1 Deputy Chief and 1 Fire Chief for a total of 88 sworn personnel. The Department currently has an authorized staffing of 58 Firefighter/Paramedics. All other sworn personnel function as State Certified Emergency Medical Technicians. The Elk Grove Village Fire Department maintains a Class 2 ISO rating, a designation that reflects the strength of our fire suppression capabilities. Only 810 of the over 49,000 rated departments in the United States have achieved a Class 2 or higher. The Fire Department has four fire stations strategically located throughout our community. Each of the four fire stations has a front-line Advanced Life Support (ALS) Fire Engine. The three fire stations located in residential areas of our community have frontline ALS ambulances; and the fourth fire station located within the Village s Business Park has a front-line ALS ambulance when staffing allows. The fire station in the center of town has a 100 aerial ladder truck that is utilized for accessing elevated areas and also carries a complete line of extrication equipment to free persons trapped in vehicles or machinery. Also located at the fire station in the center of town is our shift commander (Battalion Chief) who manages the day-to-day operations of the shift and serves as the initial Incident Commander for emergency incidents. Supplemental Information Work Schedule: Firefighters currently work on 24 hours and off 48 hours. Firefighters are eligible for overtime pay in accordance with the conditions defined in the collective bargaining agreement between the Village of Elk Grove Village and the Elk Grove Firefighters Association, Local No Salary: Effective May 1, 2015, the starting annual salary for the position of Firefighter is $62, An additional stipend of $4,300 is provided to all authorized paramedics.
5 Wage Range for Firefighters effective 05/01/2015: Starting Salary $62, Step 2 $67, Step 3 $72, Step 4 $76, Step 5 $81, Step 6 $86, Top Range $91, Pension: The Illinois State Statutes require that percent of the base salary of a Firefighter be deducted on a monthly basis and placed in a pension fund. The Village contributes percent into the Pension Fund. The Fire Pension Fund is administered according to prescribed State law. Benefits: The Village offers a comprehensive benefit package for the employee and qualifying dependents. This benefit package includes medical, dental, and life insurance benefits. Vacation, holiday, and sick leave benefits are also provided. Training: The Elk Grove Village Fire Department participates in the Illinois State Certified Firefighters Training Program. Courses toward achieving required State Certification are provided through the department. New hires will have $75.00 deducted per payroll check until the employee completes his/her probationary period. Upon attainment of permanent employment status, he/she will be reimbursed for the total amount that has been withheld. If the employee fails to attain permanent employment status, the amount that has been withheld will be used to reimburse the Village for its training and equipment costs. Certifications/Specialties: Firefighters shall obtain certifications and/or specialties as required and/or deemed necessary for the effective operation of the Fire Department. All Firefighters shall become certified as Illinois State Certified Firefighters (Level II), Hazardous Materials First Responders Operations and Emergency Medical Technician Level B (EMT-B) prior to completion of their probationary period. A Firefighter shall become an Illinois State Certified Firefighter (Level III) within three (3) years from his/her initial date of employment. Other certification and/or specialties deemed necessary include but are not limited to those within the areas of fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue, fire prevention and investigation, hazardous materials, and public education. All required certifications and/or specialties obtained shall be maintained unless express written permission to decertify in a given area is granted by the Fire Chief. This is determined by the operational needs of the Fire Department. Licensure as a paramedic may be required as a condition of continued employment at the discretion of the Fire Chief.
