Colorado Mountain College offers two programs for students seeking to start a career and land what many consider the best job in the world! For active firefighters, Colorado Mountain College offers a wide variety of career-enhancing professional development courses and certificatebased fields of study.

2 The Fire Science Technology Program The Fire Science Technology Program at CMC offers two gateways to begin a career in firefighting in Colorado and many other states. AAS Degree in Fire Science Technology The first, and most often recommended option is to obtain a two-year Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS). This provides students with a FESHE (Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education) recommended course of study and the necessary classes leading to a State of Colorado Firefighter 1 certification. The AAS degree also includes courses in the Emergency Medical Technician Basic track, and is geared to prepare students for certification through the National Registry program (NREMT-B). These courses, coupled with general education courses, culminate in a college degree that demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to successfully enter and succeed in the field of firefighting. Basic Fire Fighter Academy An intensive one-semester program, the Firefighter 1 Academy, is another option for students who want to obtain the basic qualifications necessary to test for Colorado certification as Firefighter 1. This program consists of two college credit classes: Firefighter 1 and Hazardous Materials Operations. Successfully completing these classes provides students with the basic requirements to take the State of Colorado Firefighter 1 certification test. That certification meets the minimum job requirements for many agencies in Colorado. Your individual career goals will help to determine which course of study is right for you. Upon entry into the Fire Science Technology program, you will receive guidance from knowledgeable college counselors and the FST Program Coordinator to help you determine your path to entry into the fire service.

Professional Firefighter Development Professional and volunteer firefighters have many options for continuing education and professional development at Colorado Mountain College. Prepare for advancement and promotion with our Driver-Operator certificate of proficiency program, or advance within a department with classes in fire investigation or fire prevention. Students can earn a certificate of proficiency in these fields that documents completion of a unique concentrated course of study, and will help prepare students for related national certification tests. For those students can also prepare for the challenges of a promotion to Fire Officer 1 and a leadership role within a fire company with a certificate in Company Officer. For those students interested in instructing in the fire service, our Instructional Methodology class prepares students to test for state certification as Fire Instructor 1. Getting Started Students new to the fire service or who are seeking entry-level jobs are encouraged to attend the degree program full-time and graduate with an AAS in Fire Science Technology. Many promotional opportunities in the fire service will require a degree or compilation of college credits. The Fire Science courses at Colorado Mountain College are accredited. Students may work on a degree or certificate programs while pursuing a career and preparing for promotion. With our course design, it is flexible, convenient, and affordable. It is never too late to start!

4 CMC FST students brief for an evolution by CMC Engine 1. Hybrid Courses Many of our Fire Science Program classes are hybrid. That means classes are structured for the maximum in scheduling flexibility and the minimum in travel to the campus. A hybrid course merges the best of face-to face interactions of a traditional classroom course with the flexibility of an online course. Our hybrid courses require some online meetings, on-campus meetings (at the discretion of the instructor and needs of the course) as well as a variety of assignments and activities that challenge students to excel. You are never alone, though. You may take classes from your station, your home, or attend on campus. Your instructors are available in person, online, over the phone or by to assist you with all aspects of the course and the learning environment. National research indicates that students are often more successful and more satisfied with hybrid courses than with traditional face-to-face or fully online courses. Instructional Staff Our instructors are active and former firefighters, fire marshals and other professionals who provide students with the highest quality education and training. Many of our instructors are current trainers for local departments and have taught classes across the nation.

5 Career Opportunities The protection of life and property is the primary function of today s firefighter. Competition for jobs and promotion is keen. With today s sophisticated equipment and techniques the modern firefighter is expected to be welleducated and well-trained to respond to the demands of the job. Today, more than ever, fire departments across the county are seeking college-educated, entry-level firefighters. The demand for highly trained, highly motivated men and women in the fire service has never been greater. Colorado Mountain College offers the training and education needed to enter the field or advance a career. Local Education On the Job Opportunities Local fire departments actively recruit our students to serve as volunteer firefighters. Many of our students have started their fire service career this way. CMC prides itself on the quality of training and education that our students take with them, whether they work as volunteers or paid, full-time professional firefighters. While most of our graduates work in Colorado, there are CMC students working throughout the country. From California fire agencies to east coast departments, there are CMC graduates serving daily in the fire service. CMC instructors work with students to ensure they understand essential firefighting skills.
