1 Joining Windows machines to eduroam Using SecureW2 Connecting to the eduroam infrastructure from a Windows 7 machine requires the installation of a special authentication adaptor (called a "supplicant" in wireless security language), and configuring that supplicant to correctly authenticate against the eduroam authentication server. The steps required to configure your computer are: 1. Download SecureW2 2. Install SecureW2 3. Complete Configuration 4. Connect Step 1: Download SecureW2 SecureW2 is an open source wireless authentication client (supplicant). Unfortunately, they have recently taken the product commercial. Click on the link below to download a zip file with the last publically available version of SecureW2: SecureW2 Step 2: Install SecureW2 You will be rebooting in this step, so you should save all of your current work now! Install the SecureW2 client software: a. Double-click on the ZIP file you downloaded in step 2 above. This will unzip the SecureW2 installer, along with the release notes (not important) and some Windows configuration information (very important). b. Now, double click on the SecureW2_EAP_Suite_113.exe installer to install SecureW2. Allow your system to reboot after the installation. Step 3: Complete Configuration First, you need to open up the wireless network properties panel. There are a couple of ways to get to the wireless network properties panel. If your network is not already active, you can begin by bringing up your control panel ( Start Control Panel). Under the Network and Internet section, select View network status and tasks, which will bring up the Network and Sharing Center (see below).

2 If your wireless adaptor is already active, you should be able to right-click on the network icon in the lower right-hand corner of your screen, then select Open Network and Sharing Center. This will bring up the dialog shown below. Now you can select Manage wireless networks.

3 Once the Manage wireless networks dialog is up, you will see all of the wireless networks already defined for this machine. If you see eduroam, we recommend you delete it to ensure you have the proper settings. If you don't see eduroam, select Add and then Manually create a network profile. Fill out Manually connect to a wireless network dialog as shown below. Make sure you provide the name of the network exactly as shown in the image below. The network name is casedependent, so it must appear exactly as "eduroam".

4 Once the new network is added, you must immediately Change connection settings to bring up the properties for the eduroam network: Fill out the forms as shown in the two images below. This will configure windows to use the SecureW2 supplicant you installed above. NOTE: this step requires Administrator privileges on your laptop. If your account does not have Administrator privileges, you may need to login as the Administrator.

5 In the Security tab select Settings to bring up the SecureW2 Configuration dialog. Create a new profile eduroam, again making sure that the name of the profile exactly matches.

6 Once the profile is created, follow each of the settings below to configure the Connection, Certificates, Authentication, and User account settings, as shown. Note that in the Connection section, you should specify your own account name under Specify outer identity: and similarly under Authentication you should use your own account and password. The last screen shot is from the Advanced settings which you get to by clicking on the Advanced button.

8 Once you have completed with the SecureW2 configuration, dismiss the dialog (OK button) and selected Advanced settings in the eduroam Wireless Network Properties to select the authentication mode (it should be User authentication):

9 Finally, click "OK" on each of the dialogs to complete the configuration Step 3: Connect For the final step, you need to be in range of the eduroam wireless network. You can check the available wireless networks on your machine by right-clicking on the network icon ( or ) in the lower-right corner of your screen. In the list of networks, you should see edurosm. Select it and then click Connect. You may be prompted for your username and password.
