1 Mapping ITS s File Server Folder to Mosaic Windows to Publish a Website April The following instructions are to show you how to map your Home drive using ITS s Network in order to publish a website using a Mosaic PC.

3 In order to create a website from a Mosaic environment, you first need to map a drive letter to your ITS designated Home drive. To do this, please follow the steps below: Home Folder (Drive V:) First, we must establish the drive mapping to the user s ITS space. We do that like this: 1. Open a Command Prompt window by clicking on Start then Run When the Run window appears type cmd and click OK. 2. You will see a window like the one below open. Type in C: as shown and press Enter. 2

4 NOTE: To remove the mapping from the Command Prompt, you can type: net use v: /d 3

5 Creating a Windows Explorer Shortcut to the V: drive We must now create a Windows Explorer Desktop Shortcut that points to the V: drive. We do that like this: 1. Right click on the Desktop and choose New then Shortcut 2. To create the shortcut, we specify the new V: drive and click Next 4

6 3. We now specify a name for the shortcut and click Finish 4. After selecting Finish you should now have a shortcut on your desktop that will map to your ITS Home Drive Share whenever you double-click on it. NOTE: 5. Now that the V: drive shortcut exists, the user doesn t have to perform the first step ever again (unless their profile is reset.) So, when the user logs off, and back on to their Mosaic XP system, all they need to do is double-click on the shortcut to re-establish the drive mapping. Like this 5

7 Typing in the User name: field as shown, as its.uncc.edu\username, then entering the password, will cause Windows to map the original drive that the shortcut was pointing to. NOTE: After the V: drive is mapped, the shortcut drive icon may take some time to change from the red question mark, back to the normal one. Sometimes it may not change. The Windows Explorer shell doesn t always catch the drive mapping event correctly so the icon doesn t update. This is not a real problem, just a visual (cosmetic) one. If the icon is double-clicked, it should always do the appropriate thing depending on whether the drive is mapped or not. 6

8 Publish a Webpage on the mapped V: Drive Once the V: drive has been successfully mapped on Mosaic Windows; the following steps illustrate how to publish a website from a Mosaic XP machine. NOTE: The public_html folder only needs to be configured once. Once it is configured, website files can be saved there without the need to repeat the configuration process. Configure the public_html folder: 1. Go to Start -> My Computer -> V: Drive and create a new folder called public_html as shown: 2. Right click on the public_html folder, select properties, and select the security tab and click Add : 7

9 3. Click the Locations button and it will prompt you to login. In the username field type its.uncc.edu\username and for your password use your Ninernet password and click OK. 4. The following window will appear after you click OK, you will need to select Entire Directory and click OK again. 8

10 5. In the Enter the object names to select box, type webpagesacct, and click OK. Click OK again to exit the Folder Properties window. Creating and Publishing a webpage: 1. Create an HTML document on Notepad by going to Start ->Run -> Type notepad and click OK. 9

11 2. Type your HTML code. An example is shown below: 3. Navigate to the public_html folder you configured earlier: 10

12 4. Save the file as index.html under the public_html folder. 5. Open a web browser and go to to view your page. In this example it is 11

13 MAC User s 1. Click on your H: drive 2. Create a folder named public_html (case sensitive) 3. Place files in the public_html folder 4. Select the public_html folder and click File -> Get Info 5. Click the + at the bottom of the window to bring up the new user window and add a user 6. In the search box, type webpagesacct, then select Network Users 7. The WebpagesAcct will appear in the result window. Click on the account name and click Select. This will grant the webpagesacct account read privileges to the public_html folder Once the webpagesacct account has read privileges, all content under the public_html folder will be accessible to view on the web 12
