2 Brief update New national curriculum in all maintained primary and secondary schools since September 2014 All schools have the same assessment requirements No more levels They have set very high standards should be able to achieve at the end of the key stage Schools have been left to decide how to assess against the curriculum

3 National assessment and tests Short reception baseline Phonics check near the end of year 1 Teacher assessment at end of KS1 mathematics, reading and writing (GP&S test) informed by scores in externally-set, internally marked tests teacher assessment speaking and listening and science National tests at end of KS2 mathematics, reading, GP&S plus teacher assessment of writing, reading, mathematics and science

6 What is left to individual schools? We have to develop a system which allows us demonstrate and evidence pupils progress and attainment against end of year expectations. This will be used to: Plan effectively for the needs of the child Keep parents informed Enable governors to gauge school effectiveness Inform Ofsted inspectors Involve the child in their own learning

7 What are we doing at Long Sutton? We have reviewed our curriculum in all subject areas. Maths increased the amount of time given to teaching maths. Extra focus given to mental calculation. Asked parent to support their child by regular practice of times table and number bonds. Adjusted timetable to enable single year group teaching.

8 English: Spelling Teaching in class to ensure all pupils have access to age related expectations. This allows us to increase the time spent teaching spelling rules and embedding within the curriculum. Shared statutory word list with parents. Putting a greater emphasis in learning spelling in context rather than for a test. Punctuation and grammar this is embedded within the curriculum but also taught discretely as part of a unit of work. Children given time to edit and modify their written work. Children prepared for end of KS tests. Science developed new overview to ensure coverage for mixed age classes with assessment integrated into units.

9 How do we decide if children are expected across the school? Set range of criteria for maths, reading and writing. Teachers plan lessons with assessment opportunities incorporated. Some formal tests are used to supplement e.g. reading age. Children are monitored regularly to identify progress. We moderate to decide what is sufficient evidence when making the decision if children have achieved each statement.

10 What happens if a child is not at the expected level. Short term children didn t understand a lesson - catch up with class teacher or LSA. Gaps in understanding small groups short term catch up sessions monitored by the class teacher. Specific individual learning needs IEPs targets set and class teacher and LSA support.

11 What about most able? New floor standards are more challenging. ALL elements are required not best fit. Curriculum has been developed to allow for coverage but also to allow time to deepen understanding. Opportunities given apply knowledge in a range of situations. In exceptional circumstances children will have specific planning to fit their needs.
