Strong Faculty Strong reputation Strong community support Success Specialist for retention Consistently high pass rate on NCLEX on first attempt Majority of graduates remain local State of the art technology Simulation Modern equipment Cuesta College ADN Program Program website is academic.cuesta.edu/nursing 2 year program that earns Associate Degree in Registered Nursing (ADN) Prepares graduates to take the National RN Licensure Examination Called NCLEX Licensure as an RN comes after passing this exam Time Commitment Full time, rigorous and demanding program 2 years = 4 semesters with summer off Monday through Friday Clinical sites from Arroyo Grande, SLO to Templeton Clinicals are completed in long term care, hospitals & clinics Schedule by the Week 1 st and 2 nd Semester: Monday Lecture all morning & skills lab in the afternoon Tuesday Lecture all morning & clinical prep in the afternoon/evening Wednesday Clinical for 9 hours Thursday Clinical for 9 hours Friday Openlab lab, homework, catch up 1 st Semester Clinical is every other week 2 nd Semester Clinical is every week 3 rd Semester: Monday and Tuesday clinical every other week Wednesday and Thursday lecture Friday scheduled skills lab 4 th Semester: Monday and Tuesday clinical every week Wednesday and Thursday lecture Friday optional skills lab practice 2

3 Coursework Prerequisite Requirements Must be completed by August 31 to apply in October No online science labs can be accepted Human Anatomy with Lab (4 credits) Human Physiology with Lab (4 credits) Microbiology with Lab (4 credits) English Composition (3 credits) Must be completed with C grade or higher Combined prerequisite Science GPA must be > 2.5 Consider recency for your success If your combined gpa is <2.5 see a nursing counselor to consider possibilities to become eligible in the future Heads up about prerequisite recency A prerequisite recency policy does not exist currently, but is being considered. If a recency policy is adapted, this will be announced on the nursing program website and in the RN application approximately 1 year ahead of time. Nursing program website can be referenced at academic.cuesta.edu/nursing Additionally Required Coursework May complete after application is submitted but should be started well before Must be completed before RN program entry Transcripts must be submitted by date in the application Required by BRN for licensure Communication Psychology Sociology Must complete no exceptions Required for the Associate Degree History/Political Science (American Institutions) Arts/Humanities Intermediate Algebra SB 1393 may waive if Bachelor Degree or higher Will need Intro to Biological or Organic Chemistry and Stats if you plan on getting your Bachelor's Degree in Nursing someday plan/take now 3

4 Equivalency Evaluation of Courses Not Taken at Cuesta is Recommended Prerequisite and additionally required course equivalency evaluations can be conducted by a Cuesta counselor: Schedule an appointment to attend a Pre RN Group Advising Session by calling 805/ (dates are listed on nursing program website) Schedule an appointment with a counselor by calling 805/ in SLO and 805/ in North County Make a phone appointment by calling the counseling department at the number above Pre RN Course Equivalency form and instructions are on the nursing program website Transcripts and course descriptions are necessary to complete coursework evaluation & should be faxed or mailed ahead of time FAX to (805) Priority Registration for Pre RN students Available for Physiology and Microbiology Learn about Priority Registration policies at a Pre RN Group Advising Session Dates are listed on nursing program website Restrictions and deadlines exist Refer to counseling website or call counseling at (805) to get the deadline for each semester: Deadline for Priority Registration for the Spring term, is in early fall of each year October 30, 2015 for Spring 2016 Estimated Costs of the RN Program The approximate cost of the Financial Aid is available RN program is $5,000 Contact the Financial Aid office Tuition, material fees, parking, books, material fees, stethoscope Apply for Financial Aid early & watch. Transportation costs include reliable vehicle and gas Apply for Cuesta Scholarships even if you have not been accepted to money the ADN Program Estimated Costs information is included in the application packet Don t forget to factor in the financial hit of loss of income for 2 years 4

5 Class Selection Multicriteria Selection Adheres to California Education Code Admission granted to highest ranking applicants Must reapply if not admitted (No wait list) Degree, License or Certificate MAX = 10 points Degree, License or Certificate Associate Degree or higher Licensed Health Care Worker (LVN, Psych Tech, Paramedic ) 10 points 8 points Certificated Health Care Worker (Nurse Assistant, Medical Assistant, EMT ) 6 points Combined Prerequisite Science GPA MAX = 40 points Combined Prerequisite Science GPA of 2.5 or higher is required to be an eligible applicant Anatomy, Physiology, Microbiology Points are calculated by multiplying the combined GPA by 10 Points are rounded to the nearest tenth. For example: a combined GPA of 3.64 x 10 = 36.4 pts If your combined gpa is <2.5 see a nursing counselor to consider possibilities to become eligible in the future 5

6 Combined GPA in English Composition& Associate Degree Math Points are calculated by multiplying the combined GPA by 2.5 Points are rounded to the nearest tenth Example: a combined GPA of 3.64 x 2.5 = 9.1 pts Must have both courses to earn any points in this category May be eligible to waive the math requirement based on obtaining a previous Bachelor s Degree AP tests may satisfy requirements If your combined gpa is <2.5 see a nursing counselor to consider possibilities to become eligible in the future Repeats in Science or English prerequisite courses 1 repeat = 5 point deduction 2 repeats = 10 point deduction 3 repeats = Not eligible* *Ineligibility and/or point deductions from repeats may be appealable on an individual basis form included with application Work or Volunteer Experience in Healthcare MAX = 5.0 points Work 200 hours within previous two years 5.0 points Volunteer 200 hours within previous two years 2.5 points Points are awarded for work or volunteer experience that t will help you be successful nursing such as: Observe the RN role Practice basic nursing care (vital signs, hygiene, etc) Gain a basic understanding of patient assessments, patient care, medications and med math Become comfortable with nursing environment Understand medical terminology 6

7 Life Experiences or Circumstances MAX = 2.5 points Disabilities (i.e. DSPS) Family income First generation to attend college Need to work while completing prerequisites Disadvantaged social or educational environment Difficult personal and family situation Veteran Refugee status Proficiency in language other than English 2.5 points Applicant must have the ability to speak, interpret, and write in the language at a conversational level and be able to translate during a medical emergency The person verifying language ability may not be a family member or relative Applicants claiming proficiency may be requested to verify this through assessment testing at Cuesta College Coursework alone will not suffice Diagnostic Assessment Tool: TEAS V 30 points Assesses Reading, Math, English & Science Need a 62% or higher for program eligibility Scores under 62% will be offered remediation to be eligible for future testing and application cycles Only TEAS V tests taken within the testing window designated in the current application can be accepted Cuesta applicants are offered one test onsite free of charge based on test dates listed in the application Refer to TEAS V FAQ on program website Study and Preparation information included in TEAS V FAQ 7

8 ADDITIONAL POINTS For Previous Eligible Applicants 8 points An additional 8points will be awarded to eligible RN program applicants who have submitted 3 ormore eligible RNprogram applications within the past 5 years without being selected for admission. Specific years will be specified on each application for clarity Keep your eligible applicant letter for verification FINAL ADMISSION CRITERIA INSTRUCTIONS & FORMS WILL BE DISTRIBUTED AT THE MANDATORY INCOMING STUDENT ORIENTATION Physical Exam Immunization records and/or lab titers MMR x 2, Varicella x 2, Hepatitis B x 3, Tdap, TB screening Seasonal Flu vaccine will be required each fall (usually free) American Heart Association Healthcare Provider CPR Card Needs to be current throughout h t program Take between June 1 and July 31 before your program begins Background Check & Drug Screen Cleared prior to the program beginning for Cuesta, and again for the BRN at completion with the licensure test application (NCLEX) Cuesta policy can be viewed on the nursing program website at academic.cuesta.edu/nursing BRN policy can be viewed at Will need arrest and court documents to submit with your licensure test application to the BRN during March/April of your final semester Application & Notification Timeline Applications accepted online October 1 October 30 th for entry the next fall The electronic application will shut down at 4 p.m. on October 30th Point allocation and eligibility status will be ed in December Notification of admission status will be mailed in February Intent to Enroll response will be required to be sent back to Cuesta within a quick timeframe 2 weeks Mandatory Orientation for admitted students will be in June Program will begin in August Reminders: Prerequisites must be completed by deadline in application TEAS V exam score 62% during the testing window identified in the current application is required to be an eligible applicant Fall TEAS test window, dates and instructions will be listed in the application Final Admission Criteria (immunity and physical exam forms, CPR Certification information, background and drug screen instructions) will be given to admitted students at the mandatory orientation 8

Apply online to be a student at Cuesta College Submit your electronic application for the RN program by the due date and time Submit official, sealed transcripts if coursework was not taken at Cuesta (mail or submit electronically) Sealed and official transcripts are unopened Request transcripts early because it can take 4 6 weeks for the school to process your request All holds on your Cuesta student account must be removed for your application to be eligible After you apply, check your mycuesta for notifications Point Allocation and Eligibility status Notification of Admission status Important and Time Sensitive Communication will be sent to your mycuesta account Assigned after you apply to be a student at Cuesta Check your mycuesta inbox directly do not rely on forwarding to another account! adjust junk and spam filters to receive our s notification dates are provided in the application Notify Admissions and Records at 805/ , ext 2555 with change of contact information It is the responsibility of each applicant to check their mycuesta .
