Toetoe Dreaming Heritage Markers by Denis O Connor are located at 38 historic sites along the new Papatoetoe Heritage Trail. Pt Chevalier Beach New directions Free walking and cycling maps of the Albert-Eden Local Board area are now available. The maps are a great way to discover little-known connections and walkways between and around local parks, villages, reserves and coastal areas. They cover an area that includes Waterview and Pt Chevalier in the west, across to Kingsland and Mt Eden in the north, Greenwoods Corner and Greenlane in the east, and Balmoral and Sandringham in the south. Funding in the Albert-Eden Local Board Agreement 2012/2013 enabled us to create these maps to encourage residents to get out and about on foot, bike or public transport, says local board member Graeme Easte, transport portfolio holder. The maps are available on our website and from the following locations: Albert-Eden Local Board Office, 135 Dominion Road, Mt Eden Eden/Albert Citizens Advice Bureau, 82 St Lukes Road, Mt Albert Auckland Council libraries in Mt Albert, Mt Eden and Pt Chevalier Community centres in Epsom, Pt Chevalier, Sandringham and Mt Albert. 6 Putting children and young people first The Future has won Four Orewa College students have won the council s Auckland Unitary Plan youth video competition, which asked young people to create a short video about how they see the future growth of Auckland. The filmmakers Stefan Crabbe, Aimee Mills, Jasmine Bishop and Yasmin Pena won against four other finalists after their video, The Future, received the most YouTube views by the close of the competition on 31 May. It s such a buzz knowing so many people have seen the video, says Stefan. Being asked to share our opinions on the future of Auckland was great. For us, building more apartments is the way to go and creating a video was a really cool way to express that. Visit to watch the videos and see the full results. (L-R) Jasmine, Yasmin, Aimee and Stefan. Youth Advisory Panel members Matariki Roche and Georgina Parata. The council bylaw sets consistent grading, food-handler training and overall hygiene standards for the whole region. This will mean, wherever you are in Auckland, food premises will be graded the same way and staff will have undergone the same level of training. Visit nz/food for more information. New alcohol licensing committees need you Last year, the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012 was passed. Members will be provided with training and will work together to make decisions on the granting of alcohol licences across the Auckland region. For more information, visit our website. Children helping out at a recent volunteer planting day at Chalmers Reserve in Avondale. Winter planting tips More than one-third of New Zealand s native plant species and more than half of its native bird species are found in Auckland and some are exclusive to our region. The importance of protecting and restoring our ecosystems and biodiversity is highlighted in the 30-year Auckland Plan. At home and in your community It s planting season, and if you re looking for inspiration for the garden, Auckland Council s native planting guides, available on our website, are a great place to start. While the guides are designed for community groups involved in planting projects, they offer plenty of advice for home gardeners. The council also offers a range of environmental funding schemes, such as the Environmental Initiatives Fund, which has supported Aucklanders to plant more than 17,000 native trees over the past year. In our parks It s planting season for our regional and local parks too visit our website to find out how you can lend a hand at a volunteer planting day near you. Auckland Council s nurseries grow seedlings from seeds collected in our regional parks. When they are big enough, they are replanted in the park where the seed was collected. More info: 23
