To the Arts Leaders of Elsie Bollinger and Isabel Shore and also to the Arts Committee Leaders you have all been superb in your leadership roles with the organisation and coordination of events and challenges over the year. Thank you for your efforts in supporting one another, the Arts and for your enthusiasm and team spirit. We wish all Y13 well as they move on to tertiary study and new adventures. Term 3 finished up with the annual school Talent Quest which always proves that Springs has incredible talent. We congratulate Mercy Williams for taking out this years competition. Coming up is the annual Media Film Gala on the evening of Tuesday 28 th October and the Junior Arts Festival mid November which will undoubtedly showcase the fine talent coming through in all junior areas of Dance, Drama, Media, Music and Visual Arts Thanks to Sienna Mark-Brown 13Art Design for Art and Design for the Arts News. arts@wsc.school.nz Kirsty Britton Arts Coordinator Arts Leaders 2014 Farewell
Elsie Bollinger: I have learnt a lot being one of the Arts Leaders this year. When things were busy, I had to organise my time to make sure that we were still achieving what we needed to. I have also realised this year the importance of achieving your goals. So often you can hold yourself back from pursuing something as it can seem like a massive, unachievable task. But if you organise yourself and follow things through, then it's not that hard to achieve the things you want to. And if you have people who are prepared to help, then it becomes even easier. I want to thank Kirsty Britton for all her incredible support. It has been inspiring working with someone who works so hard and is always so positive. Isabel Shore: I have really enjoyed being an Arts Leader this year as it has been a great learning opportunity and a way to contribute to the school. At times it has been difficult to balance my level three school work with student leader obligations but having the support of Elsie Bollinger, Ms Britton and the Arts Committee has been amazing. It has been a very busy year with Sheilah Winn in Term One, the music concert and Ponsonby Arts Week in Term Two and SPAMALOT and Talent Quest in term three. I have very much enjoyed working on these different events and have gained a lot from this experience. Talent Quest 2014 Every year Western Springs College holds the school Talent Quest at the end of Term Three to celebrate the approaching of the end of the year, and to exhibit the amazing attributes of the students. It is a big event which requires a lot of planning and organisation. We held auditions across the different departments; Drama, Dance and Music. Due to limited space, only twelve performances were selected to go forward and perform on the day, which made the decision incredibly difficult. The audition process was a reminder of the creativity of the students at Springs with over ten acts auditioning. The actual event took place in the afternoon of the 26th of September, the final Friday of Term Three. Due to the small amount space in the hall only the years nine, ten and thirteen were able to watch but the performers were a mix of all year levels. Thanks to the work of Kim Tait, Barnaby James, and PAT, the hall was fully rigged with topnotch lights and sound. Thanks to Kirsty Britton and the Arts Committee all the acts were on stage at the right times. The event ran smoothly with the
help of Simon Mead and Lucy Cacciopoli as our MCs and entertainers. It was a hard job for the judges - Ms Skelton, Mr James and Ms Dikstaal - to decide a winner, but in the end first place went to singer/songwriter Mercy Williams for the beautiful performance of a song she had written. Second place went to Jaysika Patel, Nane Paulina Une, and Nova for their fusion Cook Island and Bollywood dance mix, and third place went to Jack Dadson for his stand-up comedy. We hope that everyone will continue with their inspiring talents, and participate again in the future. Talent Quest has also inspired the Arts Committee to think about setting up a singer/songwriter competition next year because there were so many strong solo performers that auditioned. It was a great end to the term and showed us that there should be more opportunities for students to perform. Elsie Bollinger
All our learning in choreography and performance culminated in our annual dance showcase at the end of Term 3. Taking Flight presented a selection of NCEA dance work from Years over the year. The standard of choreography was high and strong representation from Year 13 had some dedicated dancers literally running from one dance to the next! Oliver Carruthers, James Lobaton and Ezra McDonald gave a dynamic performance of their NCEA choreography Isolation in the Tempo Auckland dance festival as part of the Secondary Colours show on Sunday 19 October. The students were selected to be part of Secondary Colours on the basis of their earlier performance in YouDance. The dancers represented the school well and made us proud. A number of WSC students also performed in the show with Pointy Dog youth dance company in a clever commentary on the sexualisation of female dancers. In Term 4 Year 11, 12 and 13 Dance students are all busily preparing for dance exams. Year 11 students are studying the features and background of early break-dance in the volatile melting pot of the South Bronx in the 1970s. Year 12 and 13 have studied how ideas are communicated through movement, choreography, sound and light in the dance RUN by Touch Compass Dance Company. We wish all students every success in their exams. Melanie Turner HOD Dance 2014 was an absolutely massive year for the Drama Department. All senior classes worked incredibly hard, pouring their heart and immense skill into four stunning plays. Year 11 recreated Shakespeare s classic The Tempest, Year 12 introduced the hilarious Until You Say, Year 12 explored Epic Theatre with Abi Morgan s Fugee and Year 13 put on a stunning version of New Zealand playwright Toa Fraser s Bare. A massive thank you is deserved for Miss Kayes and Mr James for all their hard work and dedication to the Drama students this year, 2014 was a hugely successful year and I know we all hope to see the same enthusiasm and commitment from both the students and teachers next year. Pearl Little - Drama Leader
As we enter the time of exams, prizegiving, finished assignments and goodbyes, it s a nice time to reflect on the year. It s been a busy time for music, with an amazing Talent Quest to finish last term off. Congratulations to Mercy Williams who won Talent Quest with her remarkable solo performance. Well done also to Dance Fusion; Jack Dadson and Savannah Murphy for coming second; third and highly commended and to everyone who participated. A huge thank you to Kim Tait, Belinda Wallbank, Kirsty Britton, judges Mr James, Ms Skelton and Ms Dikstaal. Also thanks to the Performing Arts Technology team, the Arts Committee and everyone else for their amazing contribution. Earlier in the year we had many successes and lots of fun times. These include performances at Ponsonby Intermediate Art Week, Rockquest Auckland Central winners Headroom s performances, NZ Music Month, Te Ao Tuaiwa performance at the Pasifika Beats Regional Finals and many more fantastic music moments. Now we can look back on a year well spent and look forward for what Music has in store for Lily MacDonald Murello and Louis Mortlock - Music Leaders WSC Finalists in The Third Wallace Secondary Schools Art Awards Congratulations to Y13 Art Design students Jeremy Lawton and Jakob Munford for being selected as finalists in the Third Wallace Secondary Schools Art Awards.
