2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission OZ Arts supports the creation, development and presentation of significant performing and visual art works by leading artists whose contribution influences the advancement of their field. Background Nashville continues to be in the national spotlight, topping such lists as the best places to live and work, most creative cities, most popular tourism destinations, among others. From Nashville s Symphony and Ballet, to its Opera and Repertory Theater, we are incredibly fortunate to have a thriving arts scene and eager audiences. Arts make the difference in Nashville, making our city an attractive place for businesses, students, young professionals, and families. OZ Arts entered the scene two years ago, launching our inaugural artistic program in February Since that time, we have brought works to Nashville that most often show in New York, Los Angeles, London, or Paris. We believe these offerings bring something new and different to Nashville, complementing the art being presented by other area venues. Now in our third artistic season, we are grateful for our diverse and loyal audiences who attend our performances and engage with us. During the season, we are excited to present several young, groundbreaking artists who are pushing the boundaries of their art forms. We will also present an avant-garde performance artist creating a new work inspired by the city in which he performs, and a play exploring the rich legends surrounding the American folk hero, John Henry. 2
3 Impact OZ Arts is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2012 by Nashville s Ozgener family. Located in West Nashville just a 15-minute drive from downtown, OZ hosts more than 25,000 visitors annually. We launched our inaugural artistic season in February 2014, presenting visiting artists who are innovative leaders in contemporary performing art, as well as showcasing showcase local artists and fostering unique collaborations. In its first three seasons, OZ Arts played to sold-out audiences and received local and national accolades with a diverse presentation of dance, theater, and multimedia performances. Highlights from past programs include Wayne McGregor Random Dance, ETHEL, Peter Brook s Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord, Philip Glass and Tim Fain, Tim Robbins The Actors Gang, BANDALOOP, Vijay Iyer, Laurie Anderson, the Trisha Brown Dance Company, Kyle Abraham and Abraham.In.Motion, and SITI Company with Julia Wolfe and Bang on a Can All Stars. OZ Arts gives local artists a platform to present their work, develop new audiences, and collaborate with others through our signature program, TNT (Thursday Night Things). The concept behind TNT is simple: it is a curated series of unexpected collaborations by Tennessee-based artists. Presented at least four times a year, an artist transforms our 10,000-square-foot warehouse space into his or her own unique vision, often collaborating with an artist of a different discipline. Past programs have paired visual artists, choreographers, and filmmakers with musicians and photographers. With this diverse and multi-faceted series, OZ Arts spotlights the artist, while encouraging experimentation and the creation of new works of art. Each OZ Arts presentation with a visiting artist includes an outreach component for a school or community organization. Our goal is to increase the impact of the artistic program beyond the performance hall. Artists have worked with several local middle and high schools, as well as colleges and universities. Public schools pay a discounted admission; and programs are free for schools designated Title I serving low-income populations. Throughout the school year, OZ Arts collaborates with teachers and administrators at our partner schools (listed below) to develop hands-on workshops, exhibition tours, demonstrations, and other special programs that support the school curriculum. We recognize the dearth of arts curricula in K-12 classrooms, and try to fill an important need by providing direct interactions with living and working creators. We believe through participation in the arts, young people develop such life skills as teamwork, critical thinking, creative writing, problem solving, and communication. Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Contributions help bring world-class contemporary art to Nashville, showcase the work of accomplished local artists, and expand community engagement programs for youth, families, and life-long learners.
