2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement California Lawyers for the Arts empowers the creative community by providing education, representation and dispute resolution. Artists and arts organizations serve as agents of innovation, and positive social change, and the growth of an empowered arts sector is essential to healthy communities. CLA's leadership and services strengthen the arts for the benefit of communities throughout California. Background Statement California Lawyers for the Arts (CLA) was founded in 1974 by a group of lawyers and artists; the Sacramento office opened in November 1996 and has since served the Sacramento region. CLA is a 501 (3) non-profit arts service agency that provides lawyer referrals, dispute resolution services, educational programs, publications and a resource library to artists of all disciplines and arts organizations as well as to members of the legal community who deal with art law issues. The organization's services and programs are designed to inform artists and help them understand and apply legal concepts relevant to the business aspects of their work. CLA provides preventive education and mediation services to help artists avoid legal problems or resolve them out of court should they arise, and provides lawyer referrals to assist when self-help is not sufficient. Needs Statement Currently, our top 5 most pressing needs are as follows: 1) CLA relies upon volunteers and interns for office support, which is critical in running our programs. Our volunteers are mostly comprised of law students and mediators. While they generously donate their time to us, our inability to offer a small stipend leads to regular turn over. We are trying to raise $30,000 so we can staff 5 interns for an entire year. This amounts to $500 a month for each intern for a 12 month period. 2) CLA needs $10,000 to produce a high quality video for the Youth Mediators in Schools program, which would allow to effectively portray the program to potential new schools and funders. As this program is unique to the area, a media presentation would allow us to communicate the great service the program provides. 3) Currently, CLA needs approximately $5, to upgrade our aging computers and purchase a laptop for offsite events. 4) We need $ in order to implement advertising for our core programs, including Lawyer Referral Services, Arts Arbitration and Mediation Services and Art/Law Educational programs for artists and arts organizations. An advertising budget would allow us to expand outreach and grow the number of people we can reach and serve. To date, CLA Sacramento has not had the budget for paid advertising and we feel this is the next step to growing our audience. 5) CLA is in need of funding for art and training supplies for the Youth Mediators in Schools Program. We are trying to raise $5, for the coming year. This would include all art supplies necessary to continue to support this art based program in the schools. CEO/Executive Director Statement In the Sacramento region, CLA plays a leading role as an arts service organization, strengthening the arts community and helping artists of all disciplines develop their creative processes. With offices in Sacramento, Santa Monica and San Francisco, we annually serve more than 11,500 artists with alternative dispute resolution services, legal referrals, education programs, job training and information services. Our growing membership of nearly 1,500 includes artists and arts organizations of all disciplines, attorneys and others. In 2012, we were selected by the US Patent and Trademark Office to provide pro bono assistance to patent applicants in California. Currently, we are training mediators to assist with copyright disputes in Federal court. Our Arts and Environmental Initiative was started in 2008 in order to raise awareness of how the arts can play a role in meeting the environmental challenges of our times. Dialogues in Sacramento, Los Angeles and San Francisco have provided unique opportunities for artists, environmental leaders and state and local government administrators to exchange ideas about how to raise public awareness of environmental issues through the arts. 2

4 Programs Programs Educational Programs Description CLA offers affordable workshops, seminars, webinars, clinics, and trainings for artists, attorneys, and mediators. These art/law workshops assist in educating artists of all disciplines so they can manage the business side of their careers and benefit the community by maintaining thriving and sustainable businesses. The Speaker's Bureau offers lecturers to speak on arts and entertainment law topics to schools and organizations, also delivering the legal "know-how" to work professionally in the arts. Budget $25, Category Population Served Program Successes Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Artists' Services General/Unspecified In November 2014 CLA co-sponsored the Sacramento Valley State of the Music Industry Forum and presented program information to over 400 artists working in the music industry. Our staff and panel attorneys were able to offer guidance on copyright issues, conflict resolution, contracts and overall business tips for the working artist. In October of 2014 we partnered with Verge Center for the Arts to present a Business workshop to over 40 artists of all disciplines. Our reviews were all excellent, with attendants sharing how valuable this information was in helping them begin to manage the business aspect of their careers. At our recent Tax Workshop, several artists evaluated the program as excellent and said they learned what they needed to know in order to properly file their taxes and how to take legal deductions for home studios and supplies. Program Success Monitored By At every workshop or Speaker's Bureau event, CLA distributes evaluation forms that ask the guest to rate the program, speaker, cost, level of material, etc... This information is carefully reviewed. We also are able to measure success based on the number of new members we receive monthly and the number of people who choose to be added to our list. In addition, we receive many verbal testimonials as to the efficacy and value of our programs. 4
5 Lawyer Referral Service (LRS) Description LRS matches creative artists and arts organizations with attorneys to solve arts-related legal issues, including copyright and trademark protection, contract review and negotiation, business partnerships and non-profit incorporation. We continue to expand our panel of attorneys to assist the arts community in the Sacramento region. This is a state certified program (State Bar certification #0021). Budget $35, Category Population Served Program Successes Program Success Monitored By Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Artists' Services Adults An artist successfully applied for and received a Trademark for an invention after consulting with a Trademark attorney on our panel. A performing arts organization was assisted in filing their nonprofit incorporation papers. An artist was assisted in getting a patent for her original design. An artist successfully negotiated a publishing contract. Evaluations are sent to both the attorney and client for their feedback. Follow up calls are made when appropriate. Dispute Resolution Services (AAMS) Description AAMS (Arts Arbitration and Mediation Services) is a national model program founded in 1980 with professionally trained mediators, arbitrators and facilitators. AAMS serves the arts with efficient, economical and confidential alternatives to litigation, including mediation, arbitration and meeting facilitation. The dispute resolution services provided by AAMS are alternatives to court and other forms of escalation. AAMS hosts the Mediators' Circle, a networking and learning group for peacemakers throughout the Sacramento area. Budget $149, Category Population Served Program Successes Program Success Monitored By Arts, Culture & Humanities, General/Other Artists' Services General/Unspecified Some cases we have helped to resolve include: copyright infringements, intellectual property rights on the internet, artist-gallery disputes, damaged artwork and employment disputes. We mediated a dispute between an author and his publisher. We successfully facilitated a large mediation with a local organization's Human Resources Department. We successfully helped a musician recover royalties. Our dispute resolution programs are monitored using both quantitative and qualitative methods. We keep records of the number of program participants; types of cases and number of resolved mediation cases. We also request that participants and volunteers complete evaluation forms. 5
6 Youth Mediators in Schools (YMS) Description YMS teaches K-12 students a peaceful and productive approach to resolving conflict with others as students develop strong communication, leadership and decision making skills which promote and improved school climate. Budget $60, Category Population Served Youth Development, General/Other Youth Leadership K-12 (5-19 years) Program Successes After our YMS graduation ceremony, a grandmother stated: Now I know why, when his brothers are fighting at home, he tells them, let s get to the bottom of this - let s talk about what s really going on.... An at risk student with behavior issues emerged from the training as a leader and exemplary mediator. The student will continue to serve as a positive role model and effective peer mediator. Upon the completion of the YMS training, the school administrators and teachers observe along-lasting, overall positive change in the school climate. Program Success Monitored By Data collection from parent, teacher and student surveys evaluate individual behavior changes. Interviews with school administration and staff track changes in school climate. Digital YMS Data which monitors the types of in-school conflict, the total number of conflicts and the number of conflicts resolved through peer mediation, is entered continuously by the school counselor and cooperating site teacher. The YMS Program Coordinator can access this data at any time. 6
