4 1 Welcome to the Sigmar Recruitment Salary Guide 2016 After five years of steady growth, Sigmar has seen demand levels in most professional sectors nearly reaching prerecession highs in Ireland has maintained competitiveness over the last few years, resulting in increasing overseas investment and as long as we stay competitive, this bodes well for some years to come. The improved job landscape in Ireland certainly fed through to macro-economic figures and unemployment levels. Whilst Ireland s strong growth is subject to national or international shocks, there is no reason that Ireland can t get unemployment back to record low levels. But maintaining the discipline to stay competitive is key to this and politically that is a challenge. open on the hard skills of applicants, but more selective on cultural fit and attitude of all candidates. This is evidenced in major focus on employer branding and, in particular, companies CSR initiatives being at their core. Finally an interesting phenomenon in 2015 was that permanent recruitment grew faster than contract and temporary recruitment. As national and global recovery was a little tentative, organisations were still a little risk adverse, and would take on a contractor if they could rather than a permanent member of staff. As the rate of recovery increases and confidence is restored, more companies are comfortable increasing headcount long term. In terms of specific skills in demand, analytics has risen to be the most wanted. Analytics encapsulates other skills and is featured in all sectors, but vacancies for data scientists, analysts, big data, risk, etc. have risen sharply. The other current trend, as the global war for talent heats up, is the continued focus on culture and purpose from hiring companies. Many organisations are investing more in training and development, so may be a little more Adrian McGennis CEO

Salaries in practice rising in 2016 to retain skills. The accountancy practice market continued to expand in 2015, a trend that we see continuing. Whilst the Big 4 and Top 10 firms have been recruiting at noticeable levels for a number of years, 2015 saw a significant resurgence of small and medium accounting firms hiring again. There is no doubt that this will continue throughout During 2016 there will be a continued demand for experienced auditors, tax consultants and accounting advisors. This will not decrease due to the demands from the client base of the accounting firms. What will change however will be the salaries offered in practice as the firms battle to attract and retain talent. There is both a threat from rival firms and jobs in industry tempting the practice workforce away from the sector. Top Tip For 2016 In addition to detailing your academic achievements on your CV, we strongly recommend that you detail all client engagements with information on client turnover or specific client responsibilities that you undertook. This will help you sell yourself to potential employers and allow them to picture you working for them.

12 9 Thoughts on the Market 2016 We approached 2015 with huge optimism and the year did not disappoint as the banking and financial services industry as a whole in Ireland moved from a period of recovery to one of growth. It was the year in which the government launched the International Financial Services Strategy to create 10,000 new jobs in the sector by 2020 and now with over 200 Irish owned and a further 200 foreign multinational IFS companies across banking, funds, asset management, aircraft leasing, insurance and re-insurance based here in Ireland, the sector is now recognised as operating at the highest level on the global financial services stage. Confidence within the industry has grown significantly in the last year with a plethora of company expansions and even start-ups establishing operations here. Overall 2015 was a very positive year for financial services but will that change in 2016? The outlook is that the market supply of talent will continue tightening in The good news for candidates is that they will have multiple offers and counter offers to think over but it presents a huge challenge for businesses who want to hold on to and expand their teams further. In order to meet these challenges head on businesses will need to truly understand the motivations of talent for both recruitment and retention purposes. Looking into work life balance, career advancement and location for talent will be as or even more important than remuneration. There has been a significant increase in roles requiring candidates to work shift hours either early mornings or late evenings in order to accommodate various financial markets. This trend looks set to continue into 2016 and the challenge will be to educate the talent market on the value proposition of working non-traditional hours. Interim talent solutions such as offering contracts and temporary assignments will continue to be an effective way for organisations to fulfil many of their variable requirements as the market for permanent talent sets to tighten in Probably the biggest challenge ahead for 2016 onwards in financial services will be the one presented by the emergence of FinTech into the market place. Something significant has been happening at the intersection of finance and technology in the last year which quite literally could change the entire face of the financial services landscape. Going into 2016 there are already 30 Irish start-ups operating in various areas of FinTech and the expectation is that this will multiply. Silicon Valley is truly taking on Wall Street in what could prove to be an epic battle and the effects of this will no doubt be seen in the financial services industry in Ireland throughout 2016 and onwards. Attracting top graduates in 2016 to large financial services institutions as opposed to smaller global technology companies working in the financial services space may prove an interesting challenge for the industry. Retaining talent in financial services as opposed to losing them to FinTech may become an even greater headache. It will be interesting to see how financial services companies adapt to the inevitable impact of FinTech. On a final note while we all want to look to 2016 with optimism for the financial services market in Ireland, it is important to keep in mind that the impact of announcements in the latter half of 2015 of global job culls by some of the larger financial services institutions has yet to be seen on our shores. One thing for sure is that 2016 will be a very interesting year. Never miss a banking job Follow Get in touch with our team by ing financial@sigmar.ie or call us on

Quantity surveyors and design engineers with 4-5 years experience are likely to see pronounced rises due to demand and supply at this level. Irish construction industry output to be 42% higher in 2016 than in 2012, according to the Society of Chartered Surveyors. Construction skills are once again in demand as the supply of quantity surveyors, project managers and senior engineers tightens. Top Tips For 2016 For junior engineers, excellent MS Excel, MS Project and Primavera skills are all seen as very relevant whether you are looking at project management, planning or quantity surveying. Also companies increasingly appreciate candidates who understand programmes, commercial aspects and how projects fit together in a practical way. For graduates or ex-tradespeople looking to become more involved in engineering/project management, pursue third level education to the highest level to give yourself more options (i.e. a level 8 engineering degree will give more options than an ordinary degree/diploma). Most contractors who are now hiring express a preference for degree level.

20 17 Thoughts on the Market 2016 At present, the construction market looks in an increasingly healthy state compared to the significant fall off in activity at the end of the last decade. There is an increased level of activity in both the commercial and residential building sectors, with both larger and medium sized companies benefiting. We are seeing both design and site professionals in demand and the increased level of jobs has also had a positive effect on opportunities for tradespeople such as carpenters and electricians. The upsurge in activity has meant that contracting and consulting companies are facing challenges however in attracting staff in certain areas, particularly intermediate (3-5 years experience) level engineers and surveyors, as many in this bracket relocated to the UK or further afield in countries such as Australia. Certainly more jobseekers who emigrated are starting to look at Ireland closely again, and Sigmar were able to successfully place several candidates relocating back to Ireland in However despite salary increases in Ireland, salary levels in the UK plus exchange rate differentials provide significant competition. Degree qualified professionals are more in demand with particular focus on process engineering, production engineering and automation engineering. Salaries in 2016 Top Tip For 2016 Overall salaries have stayed on par with last year. We would expect this to continue with two exceptions: automation engineers and process engineers which have each risen around 10% across all experience levels. Lean and Six Sigma (LSS) are in vogue and have become the cornerstone of good manufacturing processes in pharmaceutical, medical device and automotive companies. Indigenous Irish manufacturing embraced LSS over the past three years but the available talent in this area is limited, therefore gaining Lean and Six Sigma green or black belt qualification gives candidates an strong edge when applying for jobs.

23 20 Thoughts on the Market 2016 Indigenous manufacturing has been slower to catch the growth bug than pharmaceutical or medical device companies, however 2015 saw change with traditional manufacturing engaging in or planning for long term growth. Many companies who downsized between are now seeing increased new roles in production, maintenance, operations, quality and R&D. In food manufacturing for agri-business the beef trade agreement with the USA and the abolition of milk quotas have facilitated, and will continue to facilitate, growth in the sector. According to the Food & Drinks Industry (FDI) website this food category is responsible, directly and indirectly, for 230,000 jobs and 26bn in turnover. This level of activity has increased competition and companies are responding by growing their science functions to understand how better to maximise the benefits of their ingredient to the final product. The outcomes of this research and development should lead to greater production and in turn new capital projects needing new employees in Heavier engineering companies are receiving new orders for bespoke parts. Renewable engineering companies, in particular, are looking at ways to improve their equipment for efficiency reasons and use specialists (Irish bespoke engineering companies) to help with such changes. This has led to a pick-up of over 200% in R&D and mechanical design engineers. Integrating said products with automated solutions is driving the demand for skilled SCADA and PLC design engineers and the market is still struggling to marry demand with supply but good inroads are being made. Overall the evidence of the improving market of 2015 indicates a strong demand for talent in 2016 across all engineering disciplines. Get in touch with our team by ing technical@sigmar.ie or call us on In the non-agri food sector in 2015 the focus was on lean transformation and continuous improvement projects to allow for greater yield across the business. Where companies are continuing these processes, results are very positive. Companies from bakery and food services are growing off the back of these changes with a few new builds for expansion being announced in All salaries taken as annual in Euros, based on working in Ireland. 25 Sigmar Recruitment Salary Guide Ireland In Demand for 2016 Hot Jobs Talent Acquisition Specialist (particularly in the technology sector) HR Business Partner Compensation & Benefits Manager Employee Relations Officer HRIS Specialist Top Skills Recruitment (high volume, graduate, sales, technology recruitment and recruitment co-ordination) Employee Relations (including knowledge of different European regions) Learning & Development (including training co-ordination and programme management) Generalist Experience (with exposure to international teams in a multinational setting) 2015 has been an exciting year for HR with movement at its highest level since In the past year we have seen an increase in demand for talent acquisition roles and HRIS analytical roles indicating two big trends growth and retention. Sigmar s HR placements have almost doubled in the last year, a trend which is set to continue throughout 2016 with an increasing demand for HR contractors and temps. HR Systems - HR Core, SAP, Workday etc. Salaries in 2016 Top Tip For 2016 There has not been any dramatic changes to the salaries being offered. Typically for HR roles the technology companies pay the highest salaries with candidates with 1 years + experience able to demand 35k upwards. Gaining multi-industry or multi-regional experience will mean that you have more marketable experience when you do look for a move or promotion.

26 23 Thoughts on the Market has been an exciting year for HR with movement at its highest level since In the past year we have seen increase in demand for talent acquisition roles and HRIS analytical roles indicating two big trends growth and retention. We have experienced significant growth in the area of HRIS or HR analytics with more organisations realising the true value of deciphering their own information to assist with insight driven decision making. Candidates in these areas are highly sought after and it is the area where we have seen the largest increase in salary levels, up to 20% in some cases. This is set to continue throughout Sigmar has seen record numbers of new start-up FDI firms coming to Ireland with requirements for senior HR staff. The most sought after background for these companies is candidates working within global environments with large matrix reporting structures, talent development, employee engagement and talent acquisition. With today s workforce being more agile than ever, companies starting up in the market need experienced HR staff to attract talent and keep it. Training and development has also seen healthy activity with roles developing from traditional instructor-based training to more blended e-learning solutions with increased accreditation of internal courses by external bodies. Primary growth sectors for HR are within financial services, manufacturing, retail and technology. Demand for specialist HR roles have seen the largest increase with HR business partner and HR management roles remaining largely consistent. We have seen some rise in HR director level roles with typical processes taking up to 6 months from start to finish. HR in the regions has seen some growth but not on the same scale as the Dublin region. HR professionals with experience in MNCs and working with very diverse/multi-cultural workforces are the most sought after. The regions are also experiencing a demand for contract recruitment roles. Typically for HR roles the technology companies pay the highest salaries with candidates with more than 1 years experience able to demand 35,000 upwards. However securing a job within one of these prestigious companies is no easy feat with candidates expected to go through extensive rounds of interview. The graduate space is very competitive and as a candidate it can be very hard to break into without completing some sort of internship or gaining work experience first. Candidates with a HR degree and less than 2 years experience might expect anywhere between 20,000 and 28,000 depending on where they are in the country. Senior level salaries are starting to recover having taken a hit in recent years. For management level roles we have seen salaries rise by 10,000 20,000 over the last year. Most importantly candidates are gaining in confidence and are more likely to demand a higher salary for a new role then accept whatever is on offer. At senior manager/director level there are certainly more vacancies then last year but the market is candidate rich so the companies have their pick of candidates for these roles. Typically the more senior the role the less urgency the company have with these processes, which are regularly being drawn out over a number of months is set to be a great year for the HR manager. Salaries are on the increase again along with benefit packages. Flexible working arrangements are becoming more common as people are living further away or returning from maternity leave. 28 25 Sigmar Recruitment Salary Guide Ireland In Demand for 2016 Hot Jobs Data/Quantitative Analyst Pension Administrator Claims Handler Medical Underwriters Commercial Account Execs Top Skills SQL/VBA/Excel/Risk Modelling Defined Benefit/Defined Contributions Technical Claims Critical Illness/Medical Underwriting Strong Commercial Broker Experience We are seeing continued, steady improvements in the Irish insurance market. A more stable economic platform has provided brokers, insurers, SMEs and larger organisations the opportunity to consolidate and grow their business for the first time in a number of years. Top Tip For 2016 Salaries in 2016 In order to attract top talent in the market, businesses have offered between a 4% and 8% increase on basic salaries along with very competitive bonus and benefits packages. The demand for relevant professional accreditations has remained high due to the increase in regulation within the industry. For customer-facing roles the APA is a minimum requirement with many employers favouring candidates with the CIP. More advanced qualifications such as the DLDU in the life assurance space and ACII in general insurance are becoming core requirements for more senior level positions. We envisage this trend continuing into 2016.

29 . 26 Thoughts on the Market 2016 Pension Admin - Within the life assurance market there has been a significant increase in demand for pension administrators and consultants, particularly with the larger brokers in the market. Specifically pension administrators with end-to-end experience in either DB or DC schemes are being highly sought after. With the phase-out of many defined benefit schemes, there has been higher demand for individuals specific to this. Underwriting - Medical underwriters, especially with ACII and DLDU qualifications, have been in high demand with leading players in the market. There has been flexibility in terms of roles offered on a part-time basis in order to attract talent. Business Admin - There has been steady demand for high quality administrators to deal with new and existing business. Many of these roles have been offered on a contract basis with the view of permanency upon completion. Claims - We are now seeing a closer shift towards the equilibrium of the supply and demand of claims professionals. Some of the larger insurance firms are growing their claims teams with a marked requirement for technical claims specialists. Actuaries - As always both qualified and part-qualified actuary candidates are in high demand. Apart from the general and life assurance businesses we have seen strong demand for qualified actuaries with consultancy organisations who are continuing to build their actuarial service offering. This is a trend we expect to continue throughout Underwriting - Demand for underwriters across commercial and personal lines has remained steady. Brokers - There has been an increased demand for strong broker development candidates, keeping in line with the resurgence of the broker market. Individuals with strong account management and sales experience have seen a steady increase in opportunities available. With many brokers growing their head counts for the first time in a number of years, they are looking for candidates who can spot opportunity and help develop business. Individuals with a proven track record of this have been found to command higher salaries. Heaviest demand has been placed on commercial account execs from both international and SME brokers. Reinsurance - The majority of positions that are arising within reinsurance are either on the quantitative side or account management. We have also seen an increase in mid-level underwriting positions. Get in touch with our team by ing insurance@sigmar.ie or call us on Data Analytics - Data analytics and data management has become a significant feature for insurance businesses in The insights which can be gained and business decisions made from having mechanisms to extract data, can no longer be overlooked. There has been a significant increase in demand for individuals with mathematical/computer science backgrounds capable of extracting data, working with it and putting it into report form for management review. We see this as a major growth area for 2016.
