4 4 ISES OVERVIEW Founded in 2008, the International Student Energy Summit (ISES) has grown in a way that no one expected. What began as an idea is now a global movement of young leaders committed to transitioning the world to a sustainable energy future. ISES is a global forum that focuses on sustainable resource management and the role that students will play in defining the future of energy development. The major goal of ISES is for students to provide new integrated perspective on the energy system, comprising these three components - technological, economic, and social - in the hopes of breading innovative ideas that will solve the complex problems of future energy development. Students are exposed to a vast community of energy thought leaders and are challenged to think critcially about they will contribute to building a future energy system we can all aspire towards. ISES 2015 will take place in Bali, Indonesia on June This is the first time ISES will take place in an emerging market. Bali never fails to deliver an incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience and ISES 2015 aims to inspire youth from all corners of the world. Bali blends spectacular mountain scenery and beautiful beaches with warm and friendly people and a vibrant culture. But perhaps less known, and more important is Indonesia s quickly growing energy economy. From massive natural gas reserves to rich renewable energy potential including abundant sunlight and unique positioning for geothermal technology deployment, Indonesia is quickly becoming a global energy player. The International Student Energy Summit is more than just a conference, it is a catalyst that sparks action in young energy leaders across the globe. ISES is a platform for multidisciplinary dialgoue, global cooperation, and innovation. With our world setting 2050 emissions targets, it is evident that whether the millennial generation is ready for it or not, we will be the generation that finally tackles our global energy and climate issues. ISES is the global gathering for the future leaders in energy and enables them to make true, lasting change on our world s energy system. 4

OUR GOALS Educate students about the current issues in global energy management. Inspire students with the knowledge and courage to challenge the current energy system. Unite likeminded students motivated to lead the world to a sustainable energy future. OUR FOCUS Our program focuses on three main pillars that address today's key energy issues: Finance, Regulation and Sustainability analyzes the context of the current energy system by evaluating the market forces and policies that influence its development Global Energy Cooperation addresses how energy impacts geo-politics and global development as the world becomes increasingly interdependent. Technology & Innovation focuses on new processes and technologies being developed and implemented in both conventional and alternative disciplines. 5

6 6 THE HOST Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) or Bandung Institute of Technology is the oldest technology-oriented university in Indonesia. Established in 1920, it is widely regarded as one of the top universities in the country with its high standard of admission. Asiaweek survey places ITB first in Asian in term of student selectivity and inside the Top 20 for academic reputation. The vibrant student life in relation with such cuttingedge academic and research activites put ITB as the nation s leading institution in many technological and science development including the energy context. As the oldest technology-oriented institution, ITB has spawned many world-class and nationally renowned energy experts such as Purnomo Yusgiantoro, the Secretary General & President OPEC and the former Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources of Indonesia, and Herman Darnel Ibrahim, the chairman of International Geothermal Association (IGA) Western Pacific Regional as well as chairman of world s biggest geothermal conference that is the past World Geothermal Congress 2010 in Bali. ITB students also act as the national pioneer to ever conduct the first and the only one Konferensi Energi Nasional Mahasiswa Indonesia (KENMI)/National Indonesian Student Energy Conference which has happened three times till the year

9 9 EVENT DETAILS Towards Our Better Energy Future : Connecting the Unconnected The theme of the summit will deliver a perfect moment for world s students to see another revealing side of energy ecosystem, energy poverty. In this increasingly interconnected world of energy, there is a need to embrace new perspectives and understand all of the major global energy challenges. Connection does not solely mean unity. Instead, connection gives students a chance to seek a new inspiration in life. The connection will also allow people to educate their minds with ideas they will never get unless they step out of their own zone. When so many unconnected pictures join together, it is the time the time to find bond. Seeing is believing, ISES 2015 in Bali will give people a real-firsthand perspective to see on its very ground in hopes of creating a new frame for putting all energy puzzles within. This theme of ISES 2015 in Bali will finally frow to contain this idea of showing to the world the time when some people s dream of striving forward being combined by other s dream of leaving no one behind. Our program team has thoroughly researched the pressing global energy issues and developed an extensive list of today's foremost energy experts. We are confident each speaker will bring a unique perspective to motivate the energy leaders of tomorrow to become involved today. 9

11 11 INTERACTIVE EVENTS 1. Student Case Competition Case competitions have been one of the cornerstones of all previous ISES events and are some of the most exciting components of the Summit. Students will be given a real-world business challenge currently being tackled by a major international organization. They will have a limited amount of time to complie their ideas and solutions with the final presentations taking place in front of the entire audience and a panel of experts from the company that the case is about. 2. International Student Article competition A Student Article Competition will be a major pre-event competition that will attract students worldwide to win free passes to attend the summit in Bali. This is an opportunity to not only tap into the leading student ideas globally but to also cover the travel and accomodation expenses for some of the most talented students in the world. 3. 12 12 A Special Welcoming Celebration Enjoy the finest welcoming to celebrate your arrival in the land of Bali. As soon as you step off the plane, a special ceremony of Indonesian and Balinese traditional dancers will welcome your arrival at Bali s Ngurah Rai International Airport. Grab some foods and drinks and dance a little bit while relaxing to recover from jetlag. This celebration will be created to give students a relaxing yet inspiring moment before embarking on the intense but exhilarating days to come. Field Trip This program component is one of the most significant innovations over previous ISES Events. Projected to happen on the third day of summit, a sponsored field trip will give students firsthand experience in exploring some of Indonesia s most innovative energy projects/ Students will depart in the morning to visit Karangasem where some Indonesian student s rural electrification projects are taking place. They will then visit villages and mingle with natives where the entire conference will then work on constructing a micro-hydripower unit to light up more people s lives in these villages. The Unconference Session A lot of productive conversations during conferences happen in the hallway. We want to move those hallway discussions into the conference rooms. They unconference idea a response to the increasing conference fatigue, has proven to be a succesful format for exchanging ideas and facilitating a fruitful discussion around a topic. 12

13 13 Special Outdoor Gala Dinner Night This is just not about having dinner in formal suit. This will be unforgettably dinner by the seashore of beautiful Nusa Dua beach scenery. The Gala Dinner will provide tropical foods and beverages of Indonesian heritage as well as inspiring speeches from some of the energy industries leading visionaries. Cultural Nights With over 64 countries sending youth to ISES 2013, and over 70 countries expected at ISES 2015, there is an incredible opportunity to experience magnificent cultures, songs, dresses, musical instruments from around the world. Students will be asked to dress up your their national outfits or provide some sort of cultural performance to showcase their home country. The outdoor venue in Nusa Dua Cultural Center will be another perfect venue to create this lingering night for amazing students of ISES
