1 Computer Specification Requirements: GENERIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE USE OF arkivalieronline.dk Arkivalier Online (AO) in their FAQ section indicates that the program has been tested using the Microsoft operating systems of Windows XP with Service Pack 2, Windows Vista and Windows 7. They indicate they have received feedback from users that have used AO with other systems and browsers such as Mac OSX with Safari 4.0; Ubuntu 9.04 with Firefox 3.0; Redhat FC bit with Firefox 3.5. Please note AO does not provide assistance in the use of any of these operating system or browsers. JAVA (this is required to view the images) Available at As you open parish registers AO checks for the latest version that you have on your system and will automatically load the correct version. While AO at one time required the Users to sign-in this is no longer a necessity. 2 MEANING OF SELECTION ITEMS IN LEFT HAND COLUMN Once you are logged in there are several option buttons along the left hand side that you should be aware of. Not all of them are critical for your usage of the site. You may investigate each on your own but only those of high importance will be described in detail, herein. 3 You should note that once you have entered the site and go beyond the homepage there is a button added and available at the top of the left hand column entitled: Forside. This returns you to the homepage. The most important selection or function involves looking at either 1) Parish Registers or 2) Censuses that are currently available for review. The links involved are: 1) the Kirkebøger (Parish Registers) and 2) the Folketællinger (Census). "Kirkebøger" When you click on Kirkebøger a new page opens entitled: Kirkebøger på Internettet (Parish Registers on the Internet). This page presents some boilerplate which briefly explains the program, indicates that one should have the latest Operating System and Java installed, and that you can find an answer to most of your questions in FAQ. You are advised however, that if you do find a problem within the system and need to contact the web master you can them at Arkivlieronline@saf.sa.dk To proceed with searches in Parish Registers, click on Søg i kirkebøger. 4 Once you are at this web page, proceed in the following fashion: (1) Identify the AMT (County) -- if you click on the down arrow at the far right side of the Amt selection box, a dropdown list of possible Amts will appear. Select the one of interest, the window will then refresh (it is loading the selection possibilities for the next lower level), (2) Select the Herred (District) again the down arrow to the far right of the Herred selection box will dropdown a list of possible Districts in the County you selected in (1) above, select the District of interest. The window will refresh. (3) Finally, select the Sogn (Parish) from the possible Parishes in the dropdown list of available Parishes in that district you selected in (2) above. A window with a table will open. You will be presented with a Table listing the available Parish Registers. The following selections are used for an example: Amt: Herred: Sogn; Thisted Hillerslev Tved Using this combination of Amt, Herred and Sogn yields the following results: Page 4 revised on 16 Feb 2011

5 Parish Register Year Range From To The meaning of the Table headings is as follows: Page 5 revised on 16 Feb 2011 Sogn = Parish Herred = District Amt = County Tekst = Text (active link and the selection link) Fra = From (Beginning with-year) Til = To (Ending with-year) F = Fødte = Births K = Konfirmerede = Confirmations V = Viede = Marriages D = Døde = Deaths J = Jævnførelser = Index (useful at times) T = Tilgangslister = Arrivals into Parish (can be used to track people) A = Afganglister = Departures from Parish (can be used to track people)

6 The X's indicate what information is available within each document. It should be noted that most of the information is separated into Male/Female segments, as applicable. However, in the early 1800s and before, the registers are sequential. That is, as an event occurred the vicar recorded it. Hence, in the early registers events are all mixed together. Once you select a Tekst (a specific Parish document) a two-column viewer window will open. This will take a moment or two as the system checks each time to verify that the latest version of the JAVA viewer is installed. Once opened, the column along the left hand side is a list of "opslag" (image(s)) contained in that Parish Register. Contents of Document Image by Image View Image Text in this Area By selecting an opslag (image), the image will open in the viewer column on the right hand side of the window. 7 There are several options available to you at the menu bar. (1) Save as... = you can save the image to your computer by designating where you want it saved. The images are tiff files and can be viewed and processed by most Graphic/Image processing software. (2) Previous Note = you can return to an image, stepping back one-by-one by clicking on this button OR jump around the list of images by simply selecting them randomly. (3) Next Note = you can proceed through the images one-by-one by clicking on this button OR jump around the list of images by simply selecting them randomly (4) Resize = you can re-size the image by clicking on the down arrow and select a size you want. 8 75% 100% 125% Fit (fit your screen) Fit width Fit height (5) Settings = this should be set to Log-level = Info Start showing from top, left corner it does not appear that activating this option makes a difference or not. Integrate with AO Værktøjer---if you are going to use AO Værktøjer (AO Tools) this should be should be activated Use other local cache---activate this only if you know what you are doing and why, otherwise the default setting is fine. 9 Each opslag is an image and may be one or two pages wide depending on the size of the Parish Register, some of which are 3 foot by 4 foot in size. MEANING OF THE COLOR SQUARE IN FRONT OF THE OPSLAG NUMBER The image is already downloaded The image is being downloaded. The download queue holds at most eight elements. The image cannot be downloaded now. The download queue is full. The image has not been downloaded. An error has occurred. If the connection has been inactive for 30 to 60 minutes you may have to log in again. Having opened a specific image you can now precede with your review of that document in pursuit of your relatives... Folketællinger på Internettet When one clicks on the Folketællinger button, the Folketællinger på Internettet page opens and a table appears that indicates the Census Years that are currently available. 10 To proceed, click on the button entitled Søg i folketællinger. This will open the window entitled Folketællinger. Select Year Click on down arrow for dropdown selection list Page 10 revised on 16 Feb 2011

11 You will have a selection box with the words ---Vælg årgang Select Year, click on the down arrow and a dropdown list will appear where you can choose the year of interest, select one. Upon selecting the year the system will refresh the window and an additional box will appear with the words ---Vælg Stedbetegnelse Select Specific Place Click on the down arrow and a dropdown list will appear where you can select from various options depending upon the year selected. Each respective census year will result in the selection option from several types of records. 12 The user will need to specify the type of census information they want to review. Etaten (Generally, the census of military organizations) The selection of Etaten will provide 3 possible options consisting of: Etaten Etaten Slot / Kompani 1- Selection box of 1 st Etaten results in the following options: Hofetaten (Royal Household) Landetaten (Country or Army Department) Søetaten (Sea Department) 2- Selection box 2 nd Etaten = Alle 3- Selection Box Slot / Kompani results in a list of specific military outfits. The User must then select the outfit in which they are interested. One may have to click on the Hent oplysninger button to retrieve the images. This then produces the opslag/images as with the Parish Registers. København (Copenhagen) The selection of this option results in a box which grants access to the various census Kvarter (Quarters) of Copenhagen City. The dropdown list provides a list of the available Kvarter (Quarters), select the one of interest and click on the Hent oplysninger button to retrieve the images. Købstad (Provincial Town) Results in the option of two selection boxes Amt Kobstad The user must now select the Amt and town of interest from the respective drop down lists. Click on the Hent oplysninger button to retrieve the images. Landsogn (Rural Parish) Selecting Landsogn provides access to the census taken for the rural or outlying areas. You will need to identify: Amt Herred Sogn This is the same as the process for selecting Parish Registers. Having completed that, you will now have access to the census for that specific location. 13 IMAGE DELETION If you are using AO Værktøjer disregard the following: It should be noted that as you view a specific image, a copy of it is downloaded to your computer system. After a while these stored images can eat up a lot of your disk space. They are stored in the directory located at C:\Documents and Settings\your name\.laviewer\data.
