Strategic Goal 1: Address the academic advising needs of higher education globally. 1-A Identify, prioritize, and address critical issues facing academic advising Solicit ideas for a Hot Topics session for the Oct. annual conference Hot Topics 2-1- Number of ideas received Plan hot topics session for the Oct. annual conference and secure presenters Solicit articles for publication in Advising Today that will address issues facing advising administrators The AA Commission Listserv Topics will generate topics for discussion among the AA Commission Membership Hot Topics Nico Schuler Authors for Advising Today Wanda Reyes- Dawes and AA Commission Listserv Topics 4-1- Submission of proposal for the conference. Receive commitment from presenters 4-1- Have identified authors and topics for articles for Advising Today 8-1- Number of topics posted to the listserv and number of discussion contributors on the team. 1-B Collect, analyze, and act upon information about the environments in which academic advising operates. 1-C Provide comprehensive professional development opportunities Conduct a professional development needs analysis for advising administrators. This information will be helpful for: a) soliciting specific topics for proposals for the annual conference, b) developing the preconference session for advising administrations at the national conference, and c) planning the curriculum for the Advising Administration Institute Janet Spence 9-1- Receipt of results of survey and provide executive office with results for dissemination to planners
3 Strategic Goal 2: Advance the body of knowledge of academic advising. 2-A Promote and support research related to the enhancement of academic advising through further understanding of the student, the campus environment, advising processes, or other related areas Work with the editors of the Advising Administration monograph in selecting topics and authors Create a theme for advising administration proposals for the national conference in Plan a webcast in the future for advising administrators Be proactive in keeping the AA Commission members informed of the work of the commission and resources available to them by working with the executive office in posting information to the commission s web page Janet Spence December 2009 December 4, 2009 Janet Spence May 1, Charity Snyder Web Page Content Development Authors named and agreements signed --Number of responses received from the AA Commission members --Submitting the theme for inclusion in the call for proposals --Acceptance by Webinar Advisory Board Web page has content posted --Feedback from AA Commission members At the Oct. 09 national conference, topics and authors for the monograph were solicited at the CIG Fair and at the AA Commission Meeting. Inquiry made to the executive office regarding this goal. 2-B Disseminate the knowledge acquired from the research Publication of the Advising Administration Monograph Creation of an Advising Administration Annotated Bibliography March 2011 Assessment Criteria to be used Finished product for distribution Jeffrey McClellan 8-1- On-going McClellan has a very good start on the development. 4 Strategic Goal 3: Champion the educational role of academic advising to enhance student learning and development in a diverse world. 3-A Identify and develop strategies for fostering collaboration and education among various advising external constituencies both nationally and internationally. Strategic Goal 4: Educate university and college decision makers about the role of quality academic advising in higher education. 4-A Identify and develop practical strategies and materials for use by college and university leadership. Strategic Goal 5: Ensure the effectiveness of the NACADA organization 5-A Promote diversity within the association. 5A(i) Create environments and processes that promote and sustain inclusion and involvement in the association will draft vision and mission statements for the Advising Administration Commission to present to the Steering Committee for approval Linda Higginson, Vision/Mission A(ii) Increase diversity within NACADA leadership at all levels. --Steering Committee s approval of statements. --Notify commission members of new vision/mission for commission --Post vision/mission on AA Commission s web page leader has been selected (Linda Higginson) and two members of the Steering Committee have volunteered to assist: Jeffrey McClellan, and Commission s Steering Committee will have representation from all of NACADA s regions Commission s Steering Committee will represent a variety of institutions (community college, small private, large private, small public, large public, etc.) Janet Spence 2-1- Janet Spence Acceptance of invitation to serve on Steering Committee from a representative of all NACADA regions --Acceptance of invitation to serve on Steering Committee from a representative a variety of institutions All regions are represented except: 4, Will work with E.O. to solicit volunteers from these 3 regions Representatives from a variety of institutional types have agreed to serve on the Commission s Steering Committee. Many have taken leadership roles within the Commission.
5 5-B Enhance NACADA's global visibility and credibility as the resource for concerns and needs involving academic advising Publication of the Advising Administration Monograph Acknowledge service to the Commission by soliciting nominations and selecting a person to receive the award. $50 needed in budget See 1A and 2B above Amanda Idema Awards Selection Committee March 2011 May Finished product for distribution Nominations received and award winner selected Section 3: Issues/Items for consideration by the Division. In order to address specific needs of advising administrators, the Advising Administration Commission members would like to create a theme for AA Commission sponsored presentations for the national conference. --Spence to follow up with Executive Director, Charlie Nutt. Section 4: Describe how you have incorporated diversity and inclusiveness of membership into the planning of your unit s goals and activities. What criteria were used to accomplish this (such as institutional type, ethnicity, new professionals, experienced professionals, role faculty, administrator, advisor; region, etc.)? The AA Commission s steering committee is made up of representatives of many institutional types: community college, small private, large private, small public, large public 4 year and large public research institutions. In addition, all regions but 3 are represented on the Steering Committee. Spence will work with executive office in soliciting members for the remaining 3 regions. Section 5: Summary of Unit Communications and Meetings Name/type of Group Meeting: Commission Meeting in San Antonio, TX at national conference and Location: October 2, Grand Hyatt, Level 4 Sequin A/B Number of Members Attending/participating: 25+ Summary of Meeting: Discussed the upcoming AA Monograph-- asked for topics to include and solicited authors; discussed the need to do a professional develop needs analysis among the membership; comments were made about the lack of depth/rigor in advising administration sessions at the conference; discussed the possibility of asking the Webinar Advisory Board to create a webinar for advising administrators; discussed the possibility of creating a theme for AA Commission sponsored sessions at the national conference; acknowledged award winners and presenters; solicited volunteer to take the lead in developing an advising administration annotated bibliography; Name/type of Group Meeting: AA Commission Steering Committee Meeting and Location: October 4, 2009, Grand Hyatt Dining Room Number of Members Attending/participating: 5 Summary of Meeting: Discussed agenda for AA Commission Meeting
