MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR D ear Supporters and Donors, Assalamu Alaikum, I want to thank you for another successful year, alhamdulillah. Your donations have helped the less fortunate and needy with relief, food, shelter, education, and health care. These accomplishments could not have been possible without your support and generosity. Jazak Allahu Khair! Alhamdulillah for the past 33 years, I have seen what your donations have done for the many Indian Muslims & minorities by bringing them hope for a better tomorrow. This year alone: we were able to provide relief for Muzaffarnagar riot victims within three days of the riots, saw 8,527 patients in our Indo-US hospital, treated 4,735 patients through our 4th India Health Initiative program over the course of three weeks, provided 2 million meals in grains in Ramadan, performed 4,262 qurbanis to more than 500,000 beneficiaries and began to build 12 new schools/masajid through Project REED. Our focus for the coming year is to invest in girls education. We know that having an education not only creates a better future, but a powerful asset for reducing poverty and inequality. Many girls for example, do not have the opportunity to continue to further their education after the 10th grade. At JIT, out of 308 students, we only have 20 girls. We want to build a Junior College for girls and a dormitory at Moinabad for them to reside in. Muslim girls are residing in Hindu hostels while going to school, but we want to change that. By building a hostel, they can practice Islam comfortably and have a quality education. IMRC has already bought the land and needs your help and support to complete the process. By 2015, we want to start a College of Education and build a girls dormitory at JIT, inshallah. We know what needs to be done and know that we will be able to accomplish them with your continuous support and donations. May Allah reward you and your family for your continuous efforts and please continue to keep the Indian Muslims in your duas. Manzoor Ghori Executive Director 3
OUR MISSION To help India s Muslims & minorities achieve security, freedom and equality - Their rights as citizens of India OUR APPROACH To solve these problems, IMRC has worked with its sister organization in India, Sahayata Trust and many other reputable partners for 30 years to implement the projects to reach our goals. 5 PROGRAM: EMERGENCY RELIEF MUZAFFARNAGAR Even 12 years later after the Gujarat riots, Muslims will still tell you stories and complaints of discrimination and violence in and around Gujarat. Unfortunately, Muzaffarnagar is now another case in the books to add to the stories. Recent riots in Muzaffarnagar between Hindu and Muslims left 113 killed and approximately 60,000 displaced and homeless. It s the trauma and post riot situation which leaves you questioning yourself, how did this happen again? Did we not learn anything from Gujarat? Haven t we moved forward since then? IMRC has assisted with emergency relief whether natural or communal violence since its inception in The relief efforts for Muzaffarnagar were no different. Within three days of the riots, IMRC was on the ground distributing food and hygiene kits by the thousands. Soon winter came and we went into the Blanket Drive to provide the now refugees with blankets and warm clothes. IMRC s Project Manager and volunteers visited Muzaffarnagar to assess the situation and met with the victims. Immediately after the initial relief efforts, we formed a legal team to begin legal work and rehabilitation for the victims. Both of these require huge resources and is a lengthy process. Alhamdulillah, we are moving forward in the right direction, however, families are still in refugee camps with barely the essentials to survive. We plan to continue to provide food, warm clothing, hygiene kits, tents, and blankets. Our legal team is working on filing FIRs and cases to bring the perpetrators to justice. Our long-term goals are to work with the legal team, provide self-employment kits and provide children with school bags/supplies where they are currently attending local schools. Ramadan is soon approaching. These families will need your help with meals to observe fast and celebrate Eid. Please show your support today so we can provide them with supplies in a timely manner. 60,000 The number of people who are displaced and homeless from the Muzaffarnagar riots Next? IMRC will focus on long-term goals for the victims: Continue to provide food, clothing and medicine within 3 days IMRC was onsite to respond to the Muzaffarnagar Riots with food, relief kits and clothes. Begin legal work & rehabilitation for the victims Provide self-employment kits Provide children with school bags and supplies 5
PROGRAM: EDUCATION I n such a big country, the quality of education varies dramatically from state to state, and even between different communities within the same region. Today in India, a good education is still a luxury. Some children face a journey of many miles just to get to school, only to arrive at a building without basic equipment, toilets or drinking water. Teacher absenteeism is rising too. With prestigious private schools reserved for the wealthy, and better-performing state schools accessible only to India s small emerging middle class, the overwhelming majority of India s children attend poor quality, overcrowded schools. CHALLENGER GIRLS JUNIOR COLLEGE Opening Fall 2014 CHALLENGER GIRLS JUNIOR COLLEGE HOSTEL Construction in progress YOUR HELP IS NEEDED NOW! Generation by generation, education helps whole communities escape deprivation and move towards a better future. IMRC understands many factors have an impact on a child s education, from gender, background, social class to geographic location and religion. That s why we focus on providing access to quality education in rural poverty-struck parts of India where communities aren t given the opportunity to better their livelihood. For , IMRC is putting girls education at top priority. This Fall, IMRC will open the Challenger Junior College and will begin JIT College of Education soon. With these two new institutions, girls will have access to education beyond primary schooling. With a shortage of an estimated 1.4 million trained teachers, the College of Education will meet the two most high demand majors amongst girls - Education and Teaching. With your assistance to sponsor a girl s housing, tuition, and/or room and board, together we can change the number of girls dropping out of school early, lagging behind in education amongst boys, and closing the gap on illiteracy. 90% of children from poor families in India remain illiterate despite completed 4 years of school.* 30% of children in India remain illiterate even after attending five to six years of school.* 25% of the Indian population is still illiterate; only 15% of all Indian students reach high school, 7% of that number who progress to secondary school actually graduate.** * Hindustan Times April 2014 A deepening crisis in India s higher education ** (Country profile: India) 6
PROGRAM: EDUCATION Build a home Build a safe and secure place for a girl to study on campus for years to come. $3000 Will provide one girl with a permanent location in a dormitory. JAHANGIRABAD INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY Congratulations to the JIT s 1st batch of College of Engineering students! It is with great pleasure to announce that JIT will have it s first College of Engineering graduation ceremony by the end of Summer this year. This is a remarkable group of students, many of whom came from families who are in poverty, who have illiterate parents, and who never thought they themselves could afford to attend a private university. It is through Allah s blessings, donors and supporters like you who helped make this possible. 90% OF JIT S STUDENTS RELY ON FINANCIAL AID Sponsorship Sponsor a girl s tuition for a year at either institution. $500 Support a girl s room and board for one full year. $1000 Students at JIT campus. Inshallah, our next phase with our Education project is to open the Challenger Girls Junior College in Moinabad for Fall 2014 and start a College of Education at JIT (in progress). These two institutions will inshallah meet the high demand of female students wanting to pursue higher education in the fields of teaching and education. We are currently raising funds to build a girls hostel at the JIT campus, too. Without proper housing, our girl students will not have safety, security and access to study on campus. It costs approximately $600,000 to build a girls hostel $200,000 per floor (3 story building) or 6,000 to build a room Inshallah, you can name a floor dedicated to a loved one. Endowment Establish a scholarship under a designated name as sadaqa jariah. $25,000 One time donation will educate two students for generations. $90,548 has been collected alhamdulillah. Please support this project so we can provide for our girl students as soon as possible. There are several ways to sponsor and support this project. Your donation to support a girl s education, room and/or board will assist in bridging the gap with girls schooling beyond primary education. 7
PROGRAM: VILLAGE WATER WELLS A lhamdulillah with the grace of Allah and generous contributions from donors like you, IMRC was able to complete 54 bore wells in 2013! We began this project in April 2013 and received great feedback to continue the program. Inshallah our goal is to continue this project to reach more rural locations that are desperate without water and do not have local access to it. Most of these locations are extremely hot in the summer and are inhabited by impoverished families. For an average of $1500, you can build a water well for a village. In the case of a Masjid location, water is provided for Masjid s use and taps are installed outside for villagers, birds and/or animals. Children gather to drink from the tap of the water well. Many communities where water wells were installed expressed joy and immense gratitude for having local access to potable water. Neighbors of other faiths are also able to benefit from the water wells. Jazakh Allah Khair for making this project successful! You can dedicate each water well as sadaqa-jaariya on your behalf or your loved ones, especially those who passed away. We will inform you about the exact location and the results. 54 Water Wells and 40 Hand Pumps completed in 2013 alone! This water well was built at a Project REED location to benefit the masjid attendees and local community. 45,000 The average number of people who benefited from the completed water wells and hand pumps. THE WATER SUPPORTED Widows & Orphans Families living below poverty line Previous communities where they had to travel 2 km to bring the water. Ladies and kids who used to bring water on a cycle or on their shoulders. These women can now get water from their local water pump location instead of long journey they used to make. which took several hours. Jazakh Allah khair! Whosoever digs a well will receive reward for that from Allah on the Day of Judgment when anyone amongst jinn, men and birds drink from it - Bukhari and Muslim 8
PROGRAM: PROJECT REED RURAL EDUCATION & ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT NOW AT 72 LOCATIONS! I t s been nearly 5 years since we first began the project in We have built 60 locations and 12 more are now in progress. We couldn t have done any of this without your support, dedication and understanding. NOTICE THE COASTAL LOCATIONS? Project REED locations were specifically chosen along coastal areas of India. Floods and monsoons are nothing new to India. Unfortunately, coastal areas are hit the hardest leaving families displaced without food, water, medicine or proper shelter. As communities began to settle and rebuild their communities, charities of all faiths began to build their place of worship. Unfortunately, there weren t any organizations reaching out to assist the Muslims. Thus, our brothers and sisters were neglected and left in extreme poverty. This went on for many generations leaving our brothers and sisters no choice but to eventually adapt to other religions; thus over 5,000 were found to have left Islam. NEXT LOCATIONS WILL BEGIN IN MEWAT, RAJASTHAN Alhamdulillah through your generosity, you have helped make a difference for 72 entire communities! These communities now look forward to observing Ramadan, celebrating Eid and other community activities as Muslims. Jazakh Allah Khair! Number of Locations built Each location has active communities who are now taking pride in their local school/ masjid with daily prayers, dars programs, women s halaqa programs, Ramadan iftars, and much more. These communities now can identify with a place of worship of their own and have even invited neighbors of other faiths. Our goal is to continue to build one new masjid/school per month. Each new location is now approximately $15,000 - $20,000. At each location, an Imam is assigned and supported with an annual salary of approximately $1000/year and $1000 is needed for maintenance. We need your support to continue running these locations and provide access to year-round resources. Some of the locations where Project REED is taking place. Jazakh Allahu Khair for providing schools/masajid for our brothers and sisters to practice in
PROGRAM: INDO-US HOSPITAL In India, your healthcare treatment is based on what you can afford. There are private hospitals for the wealthy who can afford it and government run hospitals that are in such poor conditions you d want to avoid it at all costs, even the poor avoid it as much as possible due to its poor facilities, lack of staff and upkeep. IMRC looked at two major reasons why minority communities were continuously in such poor health. They were diabetes; which is high throughout India; and communities in rural areas didn t have access to affordable healthcare. With diabetes there is a trickle effect leading to other problems such as blindness and kidney failure. Through your support, IMRC began this new project called the Indo-US Hospital in The idea was to provide quality medical treatment and education in rural communities by building a new state-of-the-art hospital. Within 18 months the entire hospital was built and inaugurated in January Each month several smaller medical camps are held where staff and volunteers visit rural locations across India to bring treatment to the people. The hospital subsidizes costs of treatment for those who cannot afford it. Each year we are expanding our services and providing treatment for a growing community. Currently we have an Eye Center which provides regular check ups and eye surgeries with lens implant, an ER, dialysis center, Internal Medicine department and pharmacy. Thank you for supporting this program. It s through your help we can provide healthcare to the needy in rural areas at an affordable cost. We encourage anyone visiting India, to stop by and visit the Indo-US Hospital. We welcome medical professionals to visit and offer educational seminars as well as their expertise. 26,304 Patients were seen in ,735 The number of patients screened for eye diseases at medical camps. 8,206 needed further consultation. 1,201 The number of patients screened at the hospital for eye diseases in ,042 The number of dialysis sessions performed at the hospital in of them were free of cost. Cataract Surgery in session at Indo-US Hospital Dialysis Department 10
PROGRAM: INDIA HEALTH INITIATIVE US PHYSICIANS BRINGING HEALTHCARE TO SLUMS & RURAL INDIA 2013 marked the 4th year of the India Health Initiative Program. Each year, a team of physicians and medical professionals from the US team up with local physicians in India to run a three week program holding medical camps in rural areas free of cost for the less fortunate. These physicians take the time out of their busy schedule to travel to India and offer their expertise to treat the less fortunate. Professionals range from ER physicians, pediatricians, geriatrics to surgeons and ophthalmologists, family practice and others. Patients traveled long distances, some even came by foot over a day, just to receive free screenings and care. Prescription medication, vitamins and glasses are some of the things provided. For more serious illness and/or conditions, referrals and follow up treatments are scheduled with local hospitals, including the Indo-US Hospital. The 5th India Health Initiative was recently completed in February We look forward in having more medical professionals join us each year. The next expected program is end of January Please join us and share it with a friend who may be interested in joining Held 4th India Health Initiative Program 11 camps Camps held in three weeks 3 Cities Hyderabad, Jahangirabad and Assam 4,735 Patients were treated during these 3 weeks Doctors from the US and India participate. 12 PROGRAM: FEEDING Ramadan is that time when we are reminded that all Muslims are enjoined by our Creator to abstain from all eating and drinking during daylight hours. This month of fasting and spiritual reflection brings us closer to Allah subhanu wa ta'ala and more tuned to the needs and suffering of other human beings. The magnitude of chronic hunger in India is staggering. Our Ramadan Program is one of the rarest programs which doesn t only last for those 30 days of Ramadan. It continues since hunger and poverty don t end with Ramadan. Each year IMRC s Ramadan Feeding program provides an average of 2 million meals. Our dedicated team onsite has worked with us for over 30 years to keep our overhead low to ensure every dollar given is spent for its cause. $1 provided four meals in grains or one cooked meal. Alhamdulillah, we have reached many people with meals during this blessed month as well as a pair of new Eid clothes for men, women and children. We were able to provide meals in grains, cooked meals and community iftars at Project REED locations too. As Ramadan nears again, we ask for your support to ensure others may also enjoy iftar and have a joyous Ramadan, inshallah. Among the best deeds are to feed the poor and the deserving and to greet those whom you know and those whom you do not know - Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith No. 826 Book 2 Chapter 6 This community iftar was sponsored by your generous donation. 2 MILLION The number of meals you helped provide to the needy last Ramadan 1,962,369 Total number of beneficiaries from Ramadan IMRC Executive Director visits onsite to oversee Ramadan operations. 13 PROGRAM: QURBANI IMRC has a meat distribution each year in time for Eid-ul Adha. We would like to thank you for all of your support in making our Qurbani program a success. Alhamdulillah we have completed the responsibility of arranging 4,262 Qurbanis this year. From the mountains of Kashmir in the north to the lowlands of Tamilnadu in the south, your generosity brought a smile to over 500,000 faces. Thanks to you, families in impoverished neighborhoods had a meal with meat on Eid, which is a luxury in their lives. We reach out to rural areas to distribute meat, unlike many other organizations which distribute in large cities. 4,262 The number of Qurbanis performed 12 Distributed meat packages across 12 states in India. Children hold their family s meat package on the day of Eid. 500,000+ Over 500,000 beneficiaries from the 2013 Qurbani Program Project REED Reed locations also received meat packages. They were grateful and happy you remembered them during the time of Eid-ul Adha. Women waiting to receive their meat package. 13
